Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
Application filed. November 10, 1911. 'Serial No. 659,628.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, J oI-IN J USSE, a subject of the Emperor of AustriaHungary, residing at Telluride, in the county of San Miguel and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dinner-Buckets, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to dinner buckets, and the primary object of my invention is to furnish a dinner bucket with a heating agent by which contents of the bucket or pail can be heated and placed in a palatable condition.
Another object of this invention is to furnish a dinner bucket with an adjustable heating agent that can be housed within the bucket when not in use and easily and quickly placed in position for heating the contents of the bucket.
A further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is simple, durable, applicable to various types of buckets and highly efficient for the purposes forwhich it is intended.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a bucket in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the bucket, showing the heating agent in a closed position, Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the agent in an open position, and Fig. 5 is a top plan of a portion of the bucket.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a cylindrical shell having the lower edge thereof bent inwardly, as at 2 and secured to the annular flange 3 of a bottom plate 4, the bottom plate has a central opening 5 surlrounded by a vertical flange 6 and secured to the outer side of said flange is a cylindrical hood 7. The top of the hood has an opening 8 in communication with an angularly disposed inlet pipe 9, the outer end of said pipe terminating in an opening 10 provided therefor in the shell 1. The outer end of the pipe 9 is adapted to be closed by a plug 11 having a head 12 engaging the outer side of the shell 1.
The shell 1 has the upper edge thereof provided with a wire edge 13 supporting the annular bead 1 1 of a receptacle 15. The receptacle 15 has a detachable lid 16 provided with a concentric hollow cup holder 17. The cup holderl7 has an irregularly shaped partition 18 providing compartments 19 for salt, pepper or other matter.
Fitted over the holder 17 is an inverted cup- 2( having a suitable handle 21. Oppositely disposed sides of the shell 1, at the upper end thereof, are provided with ears 22. and loosely connected to said ears is a bail or pandle 23 of the ordinary and well known The bottom plate 4 of the bucket is pro vided with transverse straps 24; arranged in parallelism and havingoppositely disposed off-set portions or bearings 25 for the cranks 26 of rods 27. The portions of the rods 27, between the cranks 26, extend through yokes 28 soldered or otherwise connected to the bottom 29 of a cup 30. This cup contains waste or absorbent material 31 that is retained within said cup by a concave wire screen 32, preferably made of fine interwoven Wire. The yokes 28 are preferably made of a single piece of wire and are arranged in parallelism, whereby the rods 27 can shift within said yokes.
The ends of the rods 27 are provided with eyes 33 loosely connected to a hook 34 oarried by the lower end of a vertical rod 35 extending upwardly through a casing 36 in the sleeve 37, carried by the outer side of the shell 1. The outer end of the rod has a cross head or handle 38. The casing 36 provides clearance for the eye ends of the rods 27, when the rod 35 is elevated.
The receptacle 15 can hold solid matter or liquid matter and in some instances solid or liquid matter can be placed in the bottom of the shell 1 around the hood 7. WVhen the contents of the bucket are to be heated, the plug 11 is withdrawn and a quantity of alcohol or other liquid fuel poured into the pipe 9 to pass through the hood 7 on to the waste 31 arranged within the cup 30. The
fuel can then be easily ignited to heat the v handle 38. As the rod is moved upwardly, the rods 2-7 are shifted within the bearings and as said rods ride in the yokes 28, said yokes will be elevated, together with the cup 30, until the crank portions of said rod are in a plane in parallelism with the bottom plate 4: of the dinner bucket. The heating agent is then housed within the hood 7 and is not susceptible to injury by ordinary use of the bucket. In raising and lowering the cup 30, the rods 27, particularly at the connected ends thereof, are more or less sprung consequently the cup elevating and lowering device will remain in either a raised or lowered position.
The dinner bucket in its entirety is made of light and durable metal and of various sizes.
What I claim is A dinner bucket comprising a body portion having a flat bottom with a centrally disposed opening, a hood carried by the bottom and arranged over said opening, a heating element, yokes fixed to and projecting from the bottom of said heating element, depending rods including upper and lower crank portions, said upper crank portions pivotally connected to the bottom of said body portion, certain of said lower crank portions extending through said yokes whereby said elements can be suspended by said rods below said body portion, a vertically movable actuating element, and means for coupling said actuating element to the other of said crank portions whereby when said element is elevated the rods will be moved toward said body portion and the heating element shifted into said hood.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
