Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
HENRY J. PAINE, O E PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, AssIeNOR To HIMsELr AND .IOsEPH KELLY, or sAME PLAGE.
SAFETY-VALVE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 102,147, dated April 19, 1870.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. PAINE, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Valves for Steam-Generators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation of a safetyvalve embracing my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same, showing the valve closed. Fig. 3 represents a similar section, showing the valve opened. Fig. 4 represents a horizontal section through the valve-chamber.
My improvements relate to safety-valves for steam-generators; and
In the accompanying drawings, A repre` sents a cylindrical shell, upon which the valve rests, and forming its Outer seat, a, open. at both ends, and iitted and secured within the top of the steam-dome of the boiler, it being provided with an annular shoulder, B, which fits tightly against the inner side of the cover. Within this shell A a central inverted conical hub, C, is arranged and supported by radial wings D, so that its upper face shall be on a level with the top of the shell, and constitute a central valve-seat, b.
The valve consists' of a cylinder, E, closed at its upper end, and having a central Opeliing, c, in its bottom, so as to form a steamchamber, F, therein, which is brought into communication with the steam within the dome of the boiler when the valve is open. Its lower face is constructed with an inner and an outer seat, beveled and ground so as to conform to and lit exactly the correspondingly-formed inner and outer seats, a b, ofthe supporting shell or case and conical hub.
The diameter of the central valve-seat, b, is about one-third that of the outer valve-seat, a, and the ilat surface of the valve E between the seats is constantly exposed to the steam within theboiler, and, when the valve is closed upon its seats by the force of the spring G, hermetically seals the steam-chamber F of the valve 5 but when the pressure of the steam within the boiler overcomes the pressure which the spring Gr is set to bear, communication is opened between the boiler and the air through the outer seat, a, and at the same moment with the steam- 'chamber F of the valve through the central posed directly to the pressure of the steam" within the boiler, thus obtaining a double pressure upon the valve to raise the latter and maintain it open until the boiler is entirely relieved.
rEhe steam-chamber F is constructed with a series of holes, f, arranged around its vertical sides, which, in the aggregate, should be equal in area to its central inlet-opening, c, for the escape of the steam from the chamber after it has performed its lifting action against the under side, d, of its closed top; and in order that it may escape freely from the chamber into the air, the said openings are inclined downward, so that the steam, in striking the topl plate ofthe valve, will descend and pass readily through them, whereby the full lifting power of the steam is Obtained upon the valve, and its ready escape effected from wi thin an inclosed chamber.
The lower face of the cylindrical chambered valve is provided with radial guide-wings H, which extend into its supporting-shellA; and in order to strengthen and brace it to resist the pressure of the spring G upon its central seat, b, its inner side, g, is inclined upward from the central opening, c, to near a level with the escape-openings fof the chamber, as
shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The conical-shaped hub C of the central valve-seat, b, being made tapering from said seat tO a point near the bottom of the Wings D, where it is merged into said wings, oifers no resistance to the ascent of the steam, but directs it upon the lower face, e, of the valve. This chambered valve E is provided with a central stem, I, cast with and extending from its upper side through an opening in an adjusting-yoke, J, secured upon two vertical standards, K, fastened to the top of the steam-domein any suitable manner; and the spiral pressurespring G, properly tempered, is placed around this spindle I, so as to bear alike on the top of the valve and the under side of the yoke, which latter is adj usted and locked by means of screwnuts L, placed on the threaded ends of the standards K above andbelow it, so as to graduate the pressure upon the valve to any required degree.
Having described my invention, I claiml. A safety-valve, E, constructed with an inclosed cylindrical steam-chamber, F, havin g au upper, d, and a lower acting face, c, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
2. A safety-valve, E, constructed with a cylindrical steam-chamber, F, in combination with an outer, a, and an inner seat, b, substau tially as described.
3. A safety-valve, E, constructed with a cylindrical steam-chamber, F, in combinationl with the ingress-opening c and the series of exit-openings f, substantially as described.
4. The escape-openings fof the cylindrical steam-chamber F of the'valve, inclined downward, 'as represented, for the purpose of facilitating the escape of the steam after ithas performed its lifting action upon the top d of said valve, substantially as described.
nshown and described.
7. The combination, in a safety-valve, of the cylindrical supporting-shell A, the central inverted conical hub, C, of the inner valve-seat, b, the cylindrical chambered valve E, having an ingress-opening, c, and exit-opening f, with the central projecting stem, I, pressure-spring G, and adjusting-yoke J, the whole constructed, arranged, and operating as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
HENRY J. PAINE.
