To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MANAssE KARGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Cigarette-Packer, of which the following is a s ecification.

his invention relates to package forming devices and particularly to a device for packing cigarettes by hand.

An object of this invention 'is to provide means for forming a bundle of cigarettes and for compressing the said cigarettes in order that they may be transferred from the former to a container or wrapper for inclosing the said cigarettes.

Heretofore difliculties have been experienced in forming packages of cigarettes by hand and considerable skill was required to produce a practically perfect and symmetrical package. It has been found that with the use of the device forming the subject matter ofthis invention, however, that bundles of cigarettes may be uniformly made and that they may be readily transferred to the wrapper as stated.

WVith the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of the implement embodying the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates an end view thereof; Fig. 3 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view of a fragment of the implement at one end; Fig. 4 illustrates an end elevation of the plunger; Fig. 5 illustrates a side elevation of the implement shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 6 illustrates a perspective view of a fragment of the implement with the holder applied thereto; Fig. 7 illustrates a perspective view of the container and the wrapper in assembled relation,,the same being broken away to show the cigarettes partially in the container and partially in the wrapper while being transferred from one to the other; and Fig. 8 illustrates a perspective view of a plunger.

In these drawings 7 denotes the body of the device having a longitudinally disposed recess, the side walls of which are flared upwardly and provided with longitudinally disposed recesses S in stepped relation to each other in each side wall. Aside from the particular shape of the sides of the recess throughout the main portion of the body, the side walls are caused to converge slightly as shown at 9, thereby restricting the opening at the end of the body. As a means for further restricting the opening at the end of the body, the bottom of the recess is inclined toward the end as shown at 10. A plate or bridge 11 is attached to the upper surface of the body at the restricted end, the said bridge 11 having a camming surface 12 on its under side adapted to be engaged by the cigarettes for the purpose of guiding them and compressing them while they are traveling to the restricted opening in the end of the body. It will follow from an inspection of Fig. 1 and the other figures of the drawing, that when the said cigarettes are forced longitudinally of the body into the restricted opening they are held in the position which they are to occupy when the package is formed. For the purpose of holding them in proper position a shaper or container such as a funnel 13 may be held at the restricted opening in order that the cigarettes may pass into said holder. The wrapper 14 which is used in this connection is shown as applied to the end of the holder and the cigarettes are then forced from the holder into the wrapper and are then ready for distribution.

In order to move the cigarettes in their assembled relation while in the recess of the body, a plunger 15 is provided, the said plunger having corrugations 16 corresponding to the recesses 8 in the side walls of the body. The plunger 15 is further provided with tapered sides 17 at one end thereof, which permits the said tapered end to pass into the restricted opening at the end of the body 7, thus enabling the operator to force the cigarettes from the restricted opening into the holder. The plunger has a handle 18 preferably formed integral therewith,

although the relation of the handle to the plunger is an immaterial detail of construction and will not, therefore, be further described in detail.

I claim 1. In an implement for packing cigarettes consisting of a body having a groove therein, the side Walls of Which are flared upwardly, the said side Walls having longitudinally disposed recesses forming seats for the cigarettes, the said side Walls partially converging at the end of the body, a bridge extending across the groove at the end of the body, and means for forcing the cigarettes longitudinally of the body.

In an implement for packing cigarettes, a body having a groove therein, the side Walls of Which areprovided With recesses forming seats for the cigarettes, the said side Walls converging at the end of the recess and the bottom of the recess being inclined atthe end thereof .forming a restricted opening in the end as compared With the rear of the recess intermediate its length, a confining member above the recess at the end of the body, and means for forcing the cigarettes longitudinally of the re cess.

3. In an implement for packing cigarettes, a body having a groove therein, the side Walls of which are provided With recesses forming seats for the cigarettes, the

said side Walls converging at the end of the recess and the bottom of the recess being inclined at the end thereof forming a restricted opening in the end as compared with the rear of the recess at the end of the body, a plunger having corrugations conforming to the grooves in the side Walls of the recess for forcing the cigarettes longitudinally of the body.

In an implement for packing cigarettes consisting of a body having a groove therein, the side Walls of Which are flared upwardly, the said side Walls having longitudinally disposed recesses forming seats for the cigarettes, the said side Walls partially converging at theend of the body, a bridge extending across the groove at the end of the body, a funnel at an end of and registering With the groove and adapted to deliver the cigarettes into a Wrapper, and

means for forcing the cigarettes longitudinally of the groove and into the funnel.
