reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though -it is'to be understood that the .invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, it 1s obvious that various moditlcatibns thereof will occur to persons yskilled in the art.
ln said drawings: Figure 1 is a plan 'view of an underirame embodying the features of the present invention, partsv being broken away for the saving of space.V Fig. is a longitudinal section therethrough taken on the plane indicated by line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section` taken on the plane indicated by line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Figi. 4 is a similar vview taken on the plane indicated byline 4-4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig'. 5 is an end elevation. Fig. 6 is a.4 detail section taken on the plane indicated by line 6-6 of Fig. 3, and looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the details: A indicates the center sill, B, B the side sills connected to the center sills by the cross bearers C, C and the divided end sill E.
' The center sill A is constructed of a single I beam extending from end v.to end of the underframe 'and bifurcated at the ends for ac-4 commodating draft rigging as hereinafter specilied, said beam being divided centrally as at 1, the two halves or sections 6 of the sill being connected by rivets passed through laterally extending and outstanding vertical flanges 2, Q formed at the meeting en s of the sections. 4Said sections are also secured by eted to. the respective top and bott-om flanges of the beam. As each section 6 ot thel Y beam comprising sill A is an exact duplicate of the other, and all. ot the parts connected to each the same as the parts connected top and bottom splice plates 4 and 5 rivdiaphragms 16 trated in full and the description and show-Ir ing are equally applicable to both. rllhe outer end of-the section 6 is biturcated, terminating in outwardly extending arms forming the draft sills l', 7, the web of sill A. being formed integral and continuous with the vertical webs of the arms forming sills 7. The upper portion ot the outer ends ot said arms are connected by an integral web S which extends beyond and between the sections of end sill E, and is depressed as at Y) transversely for accommodatingthe end nailingstrip, not illustrated. lNeb 8 extends outwardly to and is formed integral with a butler or striking plate S'. The upper portions of the outer ends ot the vertical webs of each sill T terminateI in `laterally extending flanges 'l0 riveted to the respectivoinner end ot'the contiguous section of end sill E, the said inner ends ot the section of the end sill being spaced by an outstanding portion ol' the connecting web 8. Sills i' are formed integral with the usual draw bar stops 1l. 1l. and the lower port-ions of said arms extend outwardly beneath and to lh'e outer edge ot' the connecting web 8, and are connected by a coupler carrier 12.
Each of the side sills l is preferably a beam of Z section. and is connected to the respective end sill E by corner bracket 13 and diagonal brace '14. the latter being connected to the horizontal web ot the side sill and to a bracket 15 fixed to the end sill.
Bolster D comprises a pair ot outstanding diaphragms 16. each formed of an. I
phragms 16 and 1s riveted to the upper {ianges I thereof, said diaphragms having their lower flanges connected by outstanding enlarge ments 18 formed integral with the lower tlan ges of sill A. :The vertical flanges ot the inner terminals o'lthe diaphragms 16 are connected together by rivets passed there? through and through the intervening web of sill A. The said inner termjnalsof the have the lower portion of their outstanding vertical flanges rounded as at 19 for producing the king pinreceiving opening therebetween which opening communicates with the .usual center bearing 2O cast integral with lower flanges of sill A, the web of said sill to the other, only one section has been illusl being cut away within the area surrounded and depending from' by Walls 1Q for leaving the pin recess. i Cast integral with and depending from the lower.
' edge of each diaphragm l-is the side been,
ing 2l.' Each ofthe diaphragms extendsl outwardly beneath and is fixed ,to the Web aglildepending flange of the respective side s1 Atv spaced points .'along the length of the sillA are' arranged the cross bearers C, C, each comprising upper and lower angle bar stress'rnembers 2 2 and 23 extendin through' sill'A and. connecting the side si ls. Said sill,.at thev .point of each cross bearer, is formed on vopposite sides with outstanding vertical flanges 24, and corner web danges extending between the web of the sill A and the tlange Each angle 22 is'- .riveted to the upper `web 25 and to the flange 24; Each angle 23 is, riveted to the lower web 25,2ind to flange 24,'said flange' 2e being formed with athickened portion ace'ot'. the lange of angle 23.
24 disposing the vertical Hnge of angle 23 at 1one side of the @lanes et theA vertical ilange of angle 22 so'asto accommodate an interposed connecting strut 2b which is ab vtached at itsupper end to the vertical ilange of angle 22 intermediate the length thereof, and at its lower end to the vertical flange of angle 23',A saidstrut engaging the inner face of the ange of angle 22 and the outer The yends Off angle 23 are'riveted to the an le A22.-
lt will, ot' course, be obvious tiet many n advantages are to be gained by the present invention, among which .may be named the very desirable advantage of rendering the center sill capable of being vproduced of cast steel Without the expense' and dilllcnltof handling a sill of the entire length o the car, and at the Sametime, by the'particnlar splicing thereof at the point specified, cuite as efficient results are attained as if the sill were. continuons and integral throughout. 0bviously, as many openings 27 may be left in ther web of the beam comprising sill A as desired for reducing the weight of the structure and the saving of material.
What I claim is:
1. In a car under-frame, the combination of a center sill and a bolster connected thereto intermediate the length of the sill, said bolster comprising outstanding diaphragme fixed at their inner ends to the center' sill and having curved flanges at theirinner ends geantes diaphragme and a portion of the material of the Vcenter sill being cut avvay in the area inclosed by said curved flanges.
