N. PETERS, PHDTO-LITHOGRAPNER. WASHXNGTON. D. C.
@anni @Winry CALVIN A. FOSTER, CF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
Lette-rs Patent No. 102,106, elated April 19, 1870.
V .HOOP- IMPROVEMENT IN SCISSORS-SHARPENERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same Know all 'men by these presents:
` LThat I, CALVIN A. Fos'rnR, of Fitchburg, county of Vorcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings'forming a part of this specicat-ion, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved scissors-Sharpener, and
Figure 2 represents a plan view of the same.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use th'e same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings` A represents the grinding-wheel, which is to be covered with a leather band, a, or other suitable material, for receiving emery or other suitable grinding substance.
Wheel A is supported upon a stud, B, which projects from the inclined arm C of the detachable frame The lower end of the frame D is made with four projections, E F b b, for securing the frame to the edge of a table or projecting bracket, a thumb-screw, G, being tted to the lower projection F, for clamping the frame to the edge of the table, while the projections b b fit against the edge of the table, thereby preventing the iame from being twisted laterally during the operation of sharpening the scissors.
From the upper end of the'fxame D an arm, H,
projects, and has secured to its upper end a slotted inclined supporting-piece, I, as fully indicated in the drawings.
The operation is as follows:
The device being attached to the edge of the table J, as indicated in the drawings, the blade of the scissors to be sharpened is placed upon the inclined piece I, with its beveled edge upon or against the grinding surface of the wheel A. A rapid motion is now im parted to the grinding-wheel, by means of the crank K, with one hand, while the operator holds the scissors in the other, gradually drawing the blade from end to end until the proper cutting-edge has been cbtained.
The device is also very convenient for scouring and burnishing knives and other similar articles.
A ring, L, is combined with the inclined arm C, which affords a support to and guides the arms M ot' wheel A as thc latter is revolved.
Having described my improved scissors-Sharpener,
What I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A scissors-Sharpener composed of the grindingwheel A, detachable clamping-frame D, guiding-ring L, and inclined scissors-supporting piece H I, said parts being constructed and arranged for joint operaltion substantially as herein shown and described.
