Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 9, 1911.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CURT ZADIG and FRnDnRmk H. KAISER, both subjects of the German Emperor, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fender for Gas- Stove Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: To provide a fender of the character named which may be removably attached to the gas supply pipe of a gas stove to prevent the striking or interference with the handles of the gas cocks; and to provide a fender of the character set forth which is durable and economical, and simple in construction.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a gas stove having applied thereto a fender constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of a fender constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 3 is a top plan View, on an enlarged scale, showing a single cock fender in operative position; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an expansible fender constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the fender is intended to prevent accidental disarrangement of the handles 9 of the gas cocks of a gas stove. The supply pipe 10 in the usual construction does not protect the handles 9 from being caught by the garments of the attendant upon thestove 11, nor prevent the accidental striking thereof by a portion of the body of the person, which engagement or stroke may open the cock and cause disastrous results. The fender constructed by us is removable, being secured in position on the stove structure by means of hooks 12 which pass under the flange 13 of the usual stove structure to prevent the fender from rocking upward and outward on the supply pipe 10. A second series of hooks 14L extend over and under the guard rail 10, the office thereof being to prevent the lift of the fender from engagement with the said supply pipe.
In the form of construction shown in the drawings the hooks 12 and 14. are shaped from metal wire. A portion of the same wire forms the sides 15. The wire is extended from the bent portions forming the said hooks to form a top rail 16 and a bottom rail 17. Each of the rails 16 and 17 is extended across the front of the stove to the outside of the handles 9 to form a frame whereon is woven or otherwise secured the netting 18 of light wire. The meshes formed in the netting 18 may be of any suitable dimension, it being preferred by us, as shown in the drawings, that the meshes shall be large, thus economizing the cost of construction.
As shown in the drawings, the fender may be constructed in various forms. In Figs. 1, 2 and 1 is shown the preferred form, where in the fender is constructed of two slidably connected sections. The sections are united by the loops 19 and 20. The loops l9 and 20 are shaped to form guide perforations for the travel of the rails 16 and 17 of the opposite sections. The loops 19 and 20 of each section are arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, being disposed between the ends of the rails of the other section. It will be seen that when thus constructed the fender may be expanded lengthwise of the front rails 16 and 17 until the loops 19 and 20 are brought together.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings the bottom rail 17 of one of the sections is bent at a point substantially midway between the ends of the said rails to form an auxiliary hook 21. The hook 21 is provided with an extension 22 which passes over the supply pipe 10 to form a supporting rest for the fender. In this manner an added rigidity is provided for the fender when applied to a stove having an elongated guard rail 10.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings is modified in that the loops 19 and 20 and the expansible arrangement of the fender are dispensed with. In this form the upper oil 23 is continuous in form, being bent at its ends to construct the sides 15 and hooks 12 and 14. The lower rail 24 is an independent wire section having formed thereon hooked ends 25 to engage and to be held by a portion of the sides 15 forming the hook 141. The short cup-like form of construction is desirable for utilization for a single gas cook or the handle 9 thereof, as shown in said Fig. 3. This nonexpansible form may be optionally enlarged.
In all forms of construction it Will be understood that the netting 18 is placed on the rails 16 and 17 and sides 15 in any convenient and suitable manner.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A fender of the character described, having a plurality of frame sections, each of said sections being shaped to form side extensions and a hook at each side, said hook to engage the gas supply pipe and stove structure to support said sections in vertical disposition, one of said sections having an intermediate supporting hook to engage the said guard rail; and guides rigidly connected With each of said sections adapted to infold in sliding relation the structural members of the other of said sections.
2. A fender such as described, having a plurality of frame sections, each of said sections having extensions and a hook at each side thereof, said hooks being adapted for engagement With the gas supply pipe and stove structure to support said fender in vertical disposition, one of said sections having an intermediate supporting hook to engage the said supply pipe; guides rigidly connected With each of said sections adapted to infold in sliding relation the structural members of the other of said sections; and an open meshed netting extended between the structural members of said frame sections.
3. A fender such as described comprising a plurality of telescopically connected Wire frames, said frames being constructed from single pieces of Wire bent to form at the end thereof alined hooks, one of said hooks to extend under the stove top and the other said hook being arranged to infold the gas supply pipe of a gas stove, and the Wire frame of one of said sections being bent to form a supporting hook to infold said supply pipe intermediate the end hooks for in folding said pipe.
