Description
ignited gnam JOHN DAY, OFAQBUFFALO, NEW YORK.
Letters PatentNo. 102,095, dated April 19, 1870.
IMPROVED HORSESHOE BLANK.
The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may conce'm .r
Be it known that I, J oHN DAY, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement inl the Manufacture of Horseshoe-s; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, suflicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully under-l stand and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings which are made a part of this specification.
' This invention is'designed to facilitate and render morev economical and expeditious the formation of horseshoes of the kind -which is narrower .at the bottom.
The reasons for reducing the width of the tread or bottom are well understood. i j
In order to effect the desired reduction of width, a groove is formed at the inside of the shoe, thus bringing the inside angle or edge of the bottom nearer to the outside edge.
The facilities and implements of a blacksmiths shop or shoeing-establishment are seldom such as to admit of working the: metal, in giving the desired relative or appropriate width to the top and bottom, without expending more time and overcoming greater ditiiculty than Ithe nature of the result would seem to justify.
In carrying out my invention, I submit metal Ato the action of a rolling-mill, so as to form bars having each a continuous groove, a, and being, as viewed endwise or in transverse section, of the form shown in the drawing.
A bar of met-a1 thus formed, may be converted into a shoe having the narrow bottom and broad top, by simply cutting it to the proper length, bending or forging into shape, and sinking a nail-groove, c.
I propose to furnish to the market bars rolled with the groove as above set forth each bar being of suficient length, if desired, to supply a plurality of blanks from which to make the shoes, by cutting, bending, and nail-grooving, as explained.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, the bar of metal shaped as herein described, and as represented in the drawings.
The above signed by me this 30th day of December, 1869.
JOHN DAY.
Witnesses:
JOHN J. DOLAN, JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM.
