AUTOMATIC TIME-CONTROLLED REGULATOR FOB GAS-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1912.
Application filed July 27, 1911. Serial No. 640,819.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER CALVIN GAM- BnnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tabor, in the county oi Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Time Controlled Regulators for Gas Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an automatic time-controlled regulator for gas engines or the like, and its objects are to provide a device of this character which is adapted for use particularly upon engines or like motors which are used for driving mill engines or the like, and means whereby the throttle of the engine and the electric sparking device can be connected with the device to be operated thereby at a predetermined time, entirely cutting oil the engine without requiring the services of an attendant.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device applied to a gas engine and to the sparking mechanism therefor, a conventional form of engine being shown simply for the sake oi illustration. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the latch mechanism.
The engine A shown herein is of the gasolene-controlled type, being provided with a throttle lever B and an electric sparking device C. The sparking device may be a suit-- able storage battery, a magneto or the like and is operatively electrically connected with the spark plug of the engine, the said sparking device being provided with a controlling switch D, as shown.
The automatic controlling device comprises av clock 1 or any other similar well known construction which will include a movable partto be actuated at a predetermined time, the alarm mechanism of the clock shown herein being the part of the mechanism relied upon in the present instance for actuating the movable element of the latch. The latch comprises a fixed member 2 and a movable member 3, both of which being provided with interfitting notched portions 4:. The element 3 of the latch when operatively connected with the fixed element 2 has its curved actuating surface 5 disposed in juxtaposition with the tapper 6 of the alarm mechanism shown, so as to be engaged by the tapper when the latter is engaged on the sounding of the alarm.
A guide member 7 is fixedly supported to a wall or other suitable support, being disposed below the timing mechanism 1, and as illustrated, said guide member has slidably mounted therein a flexible controlling element 8 such as a cable. The upper end of the cable is connected, at 9, to the movable element 3 of the latch. The opposite end of the cable has connected therewith a weight 10. The controlling cable is connected with supplemental controlling cables or similar suitable flexible connections 11 and 12, the latter being slidable in the guide 13 and provided with a looped terminal 14 which is adapted to be extended over the throttle lever B of the engine. The cable 11 is provided with a looped terminal 15 which is adapted to be extended over the switch D of the spar-king mechanism hereinbefore described. The cable 11 is provided at the point above the guide 16 with a stop 17 which is designed to engage the guide so as to limit the sliding movement of the cable under the tension of the weight 10. The cable 12 is provided with a similar stop 18 which is designed to engage the guide 13, as shown.
In operation of my improved time-controlled mechanism, the looped terminals 14: and 15 are placed over the switch 1) and throttle lever B of the engine. Theelement 3 of the latch is engaged with its co6perating element 2 and disposed in the path of the t apper so that on movement of the latter it will actuate the element 3 of the latter, disengaging the same from the stationary element 2. This permits the weight 10 to draw downwardly on the cable 8 and to correspondingly act or draw upon the cables 11 so as to simultaneously control the throttle lever and the switch piece D. The stops 17 and 18 respectively, while being adapted for cooperation with the guides 13 and 16 will be engaged thereby so as to limit the movement of the cables 11 and 12 when drawn upon through the tension of the weight 10 and thereby hold the loop portions 14 and 17 in relative close proximity with their engaging levers so as to permit of their being conveniently and quickly engaged therewith after operation of the device.
I claim:
An engine stopper comprising flexible connections having looped ends adapted to be extended over the throttle lever and the movable switch piece of the sparking device respectively of the engine, means for guiding the connections in their sliding movements and for limiting the sliding movements of said connections, a gravitating member for moving the first connections to operative posit-ions, a flexible connection connected With the said gravitating member, a fixed member disposed above the gravitating member, and time-controlled means on the flexible connection of the gravitating member and adapted for removable engage ment With the said fixed member whereby the said gravitating member is held against movement in one direction.
I11 testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
