In the ,practicaluse of my grinding ma? chine, the operation is as follows: The halls, while in'the rough, are de os ited in the chuteand ermitted to escend therein so that they will-lie as seen in Fig. I. The operator to deposit a ballinto position to be ground moves the operating lever 12 rear-' wa rdly thereby imparting a rearward movement to the shank of the inder head and said head, with theresult t at the outermost ball in the enlarged outlet end of the chute 20 descends into the space between the 19. The operating lever is then released and the sprin 11 moves the grinder head and its-shank orwa'rdly-to cause it to v hold the ball between the grindin block and the presser disk while the cam biock 28 isreturned to its normal position and acts to return the catcher arm 23 to the'lowered position. A ball having been vpositioned, as stated, the shafts 13 and 16 are'both placed in'inotion, one being preferably rotated-in 'ne. direction and the other in thexopposite direction, and grinding fluid is caused to fiow through the grinder head and itsshank to the ball, for the Eurpose of assisting in,

It will be plainly'undcrstood that the movement of the ball provided for by the action of the presser disk against it, which is subject to the movement of both of the shafts l3 and 16, is one iiivolving a multitude of turningsjthereof in every direction, and such movement is consequently herein designated as a universal movement.

1. In a ball grinding a e'hine, a grinding member,'and means wherebya ball to be ground has a universal movement automatically imparted to it Whll(. .ll0.l(l in contact at a fixed point with said grinding member. 2. In a ball grinding-machine, a station- I ary grinding member, fand rotatable means whereby a ball to be, ground has a universal movement automaticallyimparted to it while held in contact at a fixed point with said grinding member.
3. In a-ball grinding machine, a grinding member, and means for holding a ball to be ground against said grinding member at a fixed point and automatically imparting a universal movement to the ball while it is so held. and a presser member for holding the ball at a fixed point relative to the face of said said ball, means for rotating said presser member, and means'for moving said presser member whereby its axis may be moved around the point aew-hich the ball is supported.

In a ball grinding machine, a grinding member, a presser member for holding a ball to be ground'to the face of said grinding member and imparting a universal movement to it while so held, means for delivering a ball to the space between said grinding member and presser member, and means for catching a ball when it is deposited between said members; said last named means comprising a catcher arm and a cam device for actuating said catcher arm.
9. In a ball'grinding machine, a grinding member, a presser member for holding a ball to be ground to the face of said grinding member and imparting a universal movement to itwhile so held, means for delivering a ball to the space between said grinding member and-Presser member, and means for catching a ball when it is deposited between said members; said last named means comprising a' spring controlled catcher arm and a cam device for operating said catcher arm.-
10. In a ball grinding machine, a longitudinally movable spring pressed grinding device, a rotatable resser member for holding the ball to be ground presented to said grinding device and imparting a universal movementto said ball, a grinding device retracting lever, means for delivering'balls to the space between said grinding device and presser member, a catcher arm adapted to be elevated into the space between said members to receive the balls entering thereinto, and a cam device connected to said operating lever for actuating said-catcher arm.
11. In a ball grinding machine, a grinding member adapted to engage a ball to be ground,a rotatable presser member opposing said grinding member and adapted to engage said ball, means for rotating said presser member, and means for moving said presser member whereby its axis is caused to travel in a circular path.
