SPINNING-TOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WV. PREYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spinning-'lops, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a spinning top having a resilient connection between the body of the top and the spinning point thereof to cause a rebounding or jumping of the top in operation; and the objects of the invention are to so arrange the spinning point with reference to the body that the top will not only rebound, but will jump or hop from one place to another in an erratic manner, and to provide an integral resilient connection for the spinning point which can be readily secured to and removed from the usual spinning-peg of an ordinary top without any other supplemental appliances.
The objects of the invention, thus set forth in general terms, are preferably attained by providing a coiled spiral or conical spring made of resilient wire having one end formed into a tubular central socket at the base or larger end of the spring 00- axial with the top, and the other end shaped as a spinning point at the free end or apex of the spring which may be eccentric to the axis of the top.
The preferred embodiment of the invention, thus outlined, is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spinning top having the improved spinning-point spring applied thereto; Fig. 2, a fragmentary section of the bottom of the top showing the spinningpoint spring in position for applying to the ordinary spinning-peg thereof; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the improved top without the spinning head, as appearing in operation.

The body 1 of the top may be of any wellknown and usual form and construction, and may be rotated or spun by any wellknown means, as by the spinning head 2 made like the spinning heads set forth in U. S. Letters Patent No. 566,922 to Maynard, No. 847,933 to Gibbs, and No. 1,005,020 to Gibbs, and, for applying the particular .form of spinning-point spring set forth Specification of Letters Patent.

herein to the top, the same is preferably provided with the axial spinning-peg 3 on the lower end of the body 1.
The spinning-point spring 4 is made of elastic wire and is preferably coiled spirally as a conical helix; which wire is extended and shaped at one end to form the central cylindric socket 5 at or in the base or larger end of the spring, which socket is adapted to tightly fit and clamp around the ordinary spinning-peg of the top; and, when forced thereon, secures the spring to the body of the top, and brings the socket co-axial with the top. The other end of the spring wire is preferably bent upon itself to form the spinning-point 6 at the apex of the conical spring, which point, however, may be deflected by a bending or shaping of the spring, so that it is located eccentric to the common axis of the cylindric socket and the top, which eccentric location of the spinning-point serves to more certainly cause the top to hop from one place to another when rebounding on the spring point.
To those skilled in the art of making tops of the class described, many alterations in construction and differences in the embodiment and application of the invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof; the disclosures and description herein being purely illustrative and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
I claim:
1. In combination, a spinning top having an axial peg thereon, and a conical spring made of elastic wire having one end extended and formed as a cylindric socket and clamped around the axial peg, and having the other end shapedas a spinning point at the apex of the spring eccentric to the axis of the top.
2. In combination, a spinning top having an axial peg thereon, and a conical spring made of elastic wire having one end extended and formed as a cylindric socket and clamped around the axial peg, and having the other end shaped as a spinning point at the apex of the spring.
3. In combination, a spinning top having an axial peg thereon, and a coiled spring made of elastic wire having one end extended and formed as a cylindric socket and clamped around the axial peg.
4:. In a top, a conical spring formed of elastic wire having one end extended and formed as a cylindric socket at the base of the spring, and having the other end shaped as a spinning point at the apex of the spring eccentric to the axis of the socket.
5. In a top, a conical spring formed of elastic Wire having one end extended and formed as a cylindric socket at the base of the spring, and having the other end shaped as a spinning point at the apex of the spring.
6. In a top a coiled spring formed of elastic Wire having one end extended and formed as a cylindric socket, and having the other end shaped to form a spinning point eccentric to the axis of the socket.
7. In a top, a coiled spring formed of elastic Wire having one end extended and formed as a cylindric socket, and having the other end shaped to form a spinning point.
8. A spinning top having a conical spring secured at its base endto the top and tern1inating in a spinning-point apex eccentric to the axis of the top.
9. A spinning top having a coiled spring secured at one end to the top and tern1inating at the other end in a spinning-point eccentric to the axis of the top.
10. A spinning top having a resiliently connected spinning-point eccentric to the axis of the top.
