ROTARY HAND-STAMP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DENNY EDMUND WALsHE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Saline, in the county of Van Zandt, in the State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Hand-Stamps, whereof the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a rotary hand stamp provided with permanent and inter changeable printing surfaces and adapted for use as a postoffice canceling and dating stamp and for other purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a hand stamp of this character which is simple in structure, convenient to handle and rapid in operation.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a plan of a roller hand stamp embodying this invention in its preferred form, a part of the handle thereof being broken off. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of said stamp, parts being broken out to better illustrate the construction. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section of the printing cylinder. Fig. 4 represents on a larger scale a transverse section of a fragment of the printing cylinder and a longitudinal section through the cylindrical die set therein and through the movable types or typebars in said die. Fig. 5 represents a reversible Wrench for use in withdrawing the die cylinder from the printing cylinder for loosening or tightening the movable typebars or types of said die cylinder.
The same reference numbers indicate corresponding parts in the different figures, round numbers being used for the principal elements and intermediate numbers for sub ordinate features thereof.
A Ushaped frame 10 preferably constructed of metal is provided with a handle 15 disposed at the base of the frame. The frame is provided near the outer ends of its arms with journal bearings 11 and 12 disposed opposite each other and near its base with journal bearings 13 and 1 1 disposed opposite each other. A die shaft 20 preferably angular in cross section is provided at its opposite ends with short journals 21 and 22 which are supported in the bearings 11 and 12. A printing cylinder 25 provided with an axial bore 26, preferably angular in cross section, is adapted to fit on the die shaft 20. This cylinder is provided at diametrically opposite points with two sepa- Specification of Letters Patent.

rate printing dies 27 and 28, which may be in the form of straight or curved lines when the cylinder is designed as a canceling cylinder for a postoffice stamp. Another printing cylinder 30 provided with an axial bore 31, also angular or otherwise adapted to fit the die shaft 20, is disposed on said shaft side by side with the canceling cylinder 25 and removable independently thereof. This cylinder 30 is designed in a postoffice stamp for use as a dating cylinder and is preferably provided with two printing dies disposed at diametrically opposite points. This cylinder 30 is provided with a screw threaded radial die socket 32 open at the periphery of the cylinder and preferably with a similar cylindrical screw threaded radial the socket 33 disposed diametrically opposite the die socket 32.
Two cylindrical dies 35 and 35 preferably constructed of steel are detachably set in the printing cylinder 30, and description of the die 35 will suffice for both. This die 35 is screwthreaded and adapted to fit either of the die sockets 32 or 33 and is adjustable therein radially of the cylinder. The outer face of this cylindrical die is convex to correspond with the periphery of the cylinder 30. The die is provided with a central type socket or recess 36 preferably rectangular in shape for the reception of movable type or typebars. The die is provided in its side wall with a screw threaded hole 37 having an enlarged recess 38 at its outer end. The outer face of the die is provided with holes 39 39 for the engagement of a wrench therewith. The convex face of the cylindrical die 35 is provided with embossed printing dies such for instance as a border 40, a town name 41 and a State name 42. This cylindrical die is also provided with movable typebars or type such for instance as a month typebar 45, a day typebar 46, a year typebar 47 and a word typebar 418. These movable typebars are properly placed in the recess 36 and clamped therein by means of the set screw l9 in the threaded hole 37.
A wrench 50 is adapted for use in connection with the cylindrical dies 35 and 35. This wrench is provided with a fork 51 adapted to engage the holes 39 in the face of said die and with an angular socket 52 adapted to engage the head of the set screw 49. The cylindrical die 35 may be withdrawn from and re-inserted in the socket 32 of the printing cylinder30. A partial withdrawal exposing the set screw 49 is sufficient for the purpose of changing the type. For this purpose the forked end of the wrench is inserted in the holes 39 in the face of the cylindrical'die and the socket end 52 of said wrench is employed to oper ate the set screw 49 for releasing the movable type and clamping those newly inserted.
A shaft 55, preferably angular in cross section is provided at its opposite ends with journals 56 and 57 which are supported in thebearings l3 and 14 of the frame 10. Separate inking cylinders 60 and 65 are disposed on the shaft 50 opposite respectively the canceling cylinder 25 and the dating cylinder 30. These inking cylinders may be constructed of any suitable material adapted for the purpose and they are so adjusted relatively to said printing cylinders as to come in contact with the impression surfaces of the latter as they are rotated.
In the operation of this roller hand stamp the handle 15 is grasped by the operator and the printing cylinders 25 and rolled over the letters or other material to be stamped. The printing surfaces of the printing rolls come in contact alternately with the inking cylinders and the material to be printed.
The angular die shaft together with the angular axial bores of the cylinders insure the printing in unison of the corresponding dies of said printingcylinders. The screwthreaded cylindrical dies 35 and 35 are radially adjustable higher or lower in their sockets in the printing cylinder 30 to make their printing surfaces correspond with the printing surfaces 27 of the companion printing cylinder 25. Other characters may be used as theequivalents of the canceling die and also of the dating die. The two inking rolls may be supplied with ink of different colors.
I claim as my invention:
1. A roller hand stamp comprising a frame, ahandle secured thereto, a die shaft jou'rnaled in said frame, a printing cylinder fixed on said die shaft and provided with canceling or other printing surfaces, a sepa rate printing cylinder fixed on said shaft independent of said canceling cylinder and provided with a sunken radial cylindrical socket open at the periphery and with a die adjustable in said socket and having type arranged to print in unison with the print ing surfaces of the other printing cylinder, and means for inking said cylinders.
2. A roller hand stamp comprising a frame, a handle secured thereto, a die shaft j otirnaled in said frame, a printing cylinder fixed on said die shaft and provided with canceling or other printing surfaces, a separate printing cylinder fixed on said shaft and removable therefrom independent of said canceling printing cylinder and provided with a sunken screwthreaded radial 7 4. A printing cylinder for a roller hand stamp provided with a sunken radial screw threaded socket opening through the periphery of said cylinder, a screwthreaded cylindrical die radially adjustable in said socket and provided with a convex face, a type socket, movable type and means for ClL1I1P-' ing said movable type within said type socket.
5. A printing cylinder for a roller hand stamp provlded with a sunken radial screwthreaded socket opening through the periphcry of said cylinder, a screwthreaded cylindrical die radially adjustable in said socket and provided with a type socket, movable type, means for clamping said movable typewithin said type socket and said die having wrench holes in its outer face.
6. A printing cylinder for a hand stamp provided with a plurality of sunken screwthreaded radial sockets open. at the periphery of said cylinder, screwthreaded cylindrical dies radially adjustable in said sockets and provided respectively with arcshaped faces, type sockets in said faces, movable types and means for securing said movable types in said type sockets.
7. A printing cylinder for a hand stamp provided with a radial screw-threaded socket opening through the periphery of said cylinder, a screw-threaded cylindrical die adapted to fit said socket and provided with a type socket, a recess in the side wall thereof, a screw-threaded hole connecting said recess with said type socket, movable type in said type socket and a clamping screw in said hole and recess.
