BURNER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY WV. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Burner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to burners such as are used in connection with combustible aeriform mixtures, my more particular purpose being to simplify the burner and improve its general efficiency.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a substantially central vertical section through the burner complete; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
At 3 is a tubular member, which, because of its relative location, I designate as the outer barrel. It is provided with a conical nozzle 4: having an opening 5, this opening having generally the form of a cone frustum, its largest diameter being outward. The opposite end of the outer barrel 3 is provided with a thread 6. An annular cap 7 is provided internally with a thread and threaded upon the thread 6. This cap holds a packing 8 and presses it against the ad jacent end of the outer barrel.
At 9 is a substantially tubular member, which, because of its location, I designate as an intermediate barrel. It is provided with a conical nozzle 10 having an opening 11, this opening having substantially the shape of a cone frustum, its largest diame ter being outward. The intermediate barrel 9 is provided with annular beads 12, 13, which fit neatly into the outer barrel 3 and thus maintain the barrel 9 concentric to the said outer barrel. The barrel 9 is further provided with a thickened portion 14 carrying a thread 15, this thread engaging a corresponding thread 16 carried by the outer barrel 3. An annular cap 17 is provided for the purpose of holding a packing 18 against the thickened portion 14. The annular cap 17 is provided internally at 19 with a thread which engages a corresponding thread 20 carried by the thickened portion 14 of the barrel 9.

centrally with an elongated longitudinal passage 22, and further provided with a conical nozzle 23. This nozzle has an opening 2-1 of substantially the form of a cone frustum. The openings 24, 11 and 5 are in registry with each other and are so proportioned that the diameters of the openings 11, 5, are greater than that of the opening 24,. The three openings in question because of their frusto-conical forms are provided with sloping walls, and these walls slope at such angles that the successive walls are suljistantially in registry with each other, as will be understood from Fig. 1. In fact, the three openings 24, 11, 5, considered collectively, have roughly the form of a single cone frustuni having its largest diameter outward, that is, to the right, according to Fig. 1.
The inner barrel 21 is provided with an annular bead 25 and with a thickened portion 26, these parts being integral with it. Fitting into the thickened portion 26 of the inner barrel 21 is a screw plug 27 provided with a head 28. The thickened portion 26 is threaded internally in order to fit the plug.
The intermediate barrel 9 is provided with two holes 29, 30, and the inner barrel 21 is similarly provided with a hole 31, these holes extending radially in through the sides of the barrels. WVhen the parts are fitted together, as indicated in Fig. 1, there are formed various annular compartments 32, 33, 34:, 35 and 36.
At 37, 38, 39 are pipes which are tapped directly into the wall of the outer barrel. The pipe 37 is used for admitting air, or, sometimes a mixture of air and steam. The pipe 38 is for the purpose of admitting oil vapor or gas. The pipe 39 is employed for admitting steam.
The operation of the device is as follows: The parts being assembled as above indicated, the inner barrel 21 and the intermediate barrel 9 are adjusted relatively to each other and to the outer barrel; and the various aeriform bodies mentioned are admitted through the various pipes 37, 38, 39. From the opening 5 there issues steam, and from the opening 11, gas issues, and from the opening 24: air or a mixture of air and steam issues and mingles with the steam and gas from the openings 5, 11. This mixture being ignited, burns in a flame which is blown outwardly from the point of the burner, that is, to the right, according to Fig. 1. The operator by turning the inner barrel 9 relatively to the outer barrel 3 can adjust the position of the conical nozzle 10 relatively to that of the conical nozzle 4, and in so doing can expand or contract the conical passage between these two nozzles. In doing this, the capacity of the burner for admitting steam through the pipe 39 is controlled at the will of the operator. Again, by turning the inner barrel 21 relatively to the intermediate barrel 9, which is accomplished by rotating the thickened portion 26, the distance of the conical nozzle 23 from the conical nozzle 10 is also regulated, this regulation controlling the capacity of the burner for admitting gas through the pipe 38. By removing the screw plug 27, a rod may be extended through the passage 22 and through the openings 24, 11, 5, for the purpose of cleaning the burner. The annular beads 12, 13, and the thickened portion 14, being integral with the intermediate barrel 9, do not admit of any adjustment relative to this intermediate barrel or to each other, so that the annular compartments 32 and 33 must always keep a constant size. F or a similar reason the annular compartment 34 must always maintain its size.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a burner, the combination of a plurality of concentric barrels of substantially cylindrical form, one of said barrels being provided with a plurality of annular beads which engage the inner surface of another of said barrels thereby forming a number of annular compartments distinct from each other, the innermost of said barrels having a small passage extending throughout its entire length, and also having a thick portion of substantially cylindrical form, a closure member engaging one end of said thick portion for the purpose of closing the adjacent end of said passage, an annular packing encircling said thick portion of said innermost barrel and engaging the end of the next barrel, and an annular cap encircling said innermost barrel and also engaging said next barrel, said annular packing and said cap being disposed adjacent to the end of said innermost barrel where said closure member is located.
