To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN T. lVALs'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swing Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to churn operating devices and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and etticient attachment for porch swings whereby the churning may be done while the operator is enjoying the use of the swing.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a churning attachment for porch swings which braces the swing and which is provided with means operated si multaneously with the churn to fan the operator.

Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the attachment removed from the swing. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. -11 is a top plan view showing a modified form of churn. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the churning attachment shown in Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 and 2 represent the side members of the base of the swing which have rising therefrom the V-shaped hanger supports 3 upon which the swing hangers 4 are pivoted. The seats 5, backs 6 and floor 7 are connected to the hangers in the usual manner and do not form any part of this invention.

The attachment comprises a vertical shaft 8 which is journaled in spaced bearing members 9 and 10 both of which are notched upon their ends at at 11 to receive the hanger supports 3'and are separated by vertical bridge pieces 12. Intermediate the bearing members 9 and 10 the shaft has keyed thereto a drum 13 having a plurality of grooves 14 arranged in its periphery to receive the belts 15. These belts are connected to the drum and are passed around the same one or two times in opposite directions and are then removably con nected as shown at 16 to the hangers so that each reciprocation of the swing causes the rotation of the drum in alternate directions. The inner end of the shaft has secured thereon an aperturcd head 17 in which a fan 18 is removably secured so that as the shaft reciprocates the fan will operate to make the removed from the attachment for cleansing.

The attachment is limited in its downward movement upon the hanger supports by lateral pins 2 1 which engage the extended ends of the bearing member 9.

In the modification shown in Figs. 1 and 5 the attachment consists of a supporting foot 25 which is adapted to rest upon the ground and has extending horizontally therefrom the upright supporting members 26 which are spaced apart by the uprights 27 and are adapted to rest upon the platform 19. The inner upright 27 has connected to its upper end the brace 28 which is grooved upon its outer ends as at 29 to receive the hanger supports 3 and immediately above the brace 28 the upright is provided with a bearing 30 in which one end of the churn shaft 31 is journaled, the opposite end being journaled in a bearing formed in the outer upright. The shaft 31 is formed in two parts and connected intermediate the same is a barrel churn 32 and the inner end of the shaft has secured thereto a drum 33 having grooves 34 therein to receive the belts 35 which are attached to the drum in the manner described for the drum 13 and having their outer ends removably secured to the hangers 1. A fan 35 is secured to the end of the drum in a similar manner to the attachment of the fan 18.

From the foregoing description it will readily be seen that I have provided an attachment to swings for churning butter which is not only conveniently and readily operated, but which also braces the swing and may be conveniently attached and detached therefrom.

Having thus described the invention what I claim as new is:

1. An attachment for swings comprising a pair of notched bearing plates adapted to be mounted upon and brace the uprights of the swing, means for connecting said plates together and holding them in separated relation, a shaft journaled in said bearing plates, and flexible belts operatively connected with the shaft and with the moving parts of the swing.

2. An attachment for swings comprising a pair of notched bearing plates adapted to be mounted upon and brace the uprights of the swing, a shaft journaled in said bearing plates, and flexible belts wound around the drum in opposite directions and adapted to be attached to the moving parts of the swing.

3. An attachment for swings comprising a pair of notched bearing plates adapted to be removably mounted upon and brace the uprights of a swing, means for connecting said plates together and holding them in separated relation, a shaft journaled in said bearing plates, flexible means wound around said shafts in opposite directions and removably connected to moving parts of the swing, and means to limit the movement of the bearing plates on the uprights.

4. An attachment for swings comprising a notched bearing plate adapted to be mounted upon and brace the uprights of a swing, a rotatable shaft bodily removable with said bearing plate, a drum secured upon said shaft, and flexible belts wound around the drum in opposite directions and adapted to be attached to moving parts of the swing.
