PUMP-ROD COUPLING.
Application filed March 19, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnsnm D. MoPnnnoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Uniopolis, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pump-Rod Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pump rod couplers, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a simple, reliable and ctIicient coupler which is quick and easy to operate, which will hold the two sections of a pump rod in coupled condition and which is easy to apply.
Another object of the invention is to provide a coupler having a spring-actuated bolt and n'ieans for locking said bolt in its retracted position for uncoupling the two sections of the pump rod.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,--
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pump rod coupler made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the coupler, showing the spring bolt retracted. Fig. 4 is an end view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the main member of the coupler provided with a squared aperture 2 formed in an offset end arm 2* for connection to one section of the pump rod. A binding screw 3 extends into the aperture 2 to bear against the rod for holding it in place. The base portion of the arm 2 at one side of the aperture 2 is inclined, as at 1, to allow free action to the pump handle, and a stop 5 projects from the arm 2 to limit the action of the pump handle. The member 1 is provided with a threaded socket G, and fitted into said threaded socket is a hollow casing 7 provided with a threaded end 8 to fit in the threaded socket 6 of the member 1. Extending through an opening 8 in the member 1 and through a hole 9 in the casing 7 is a bolt comprising two members 10 and 10 pivotally connected together by means of a pin 11. A spiral spring 12 surrounds the bolt, said spring bearing at one end against a shoulder formed on the inner wall of one end of the casing 7, and at the other end against a pin 20 extending transversely through the bolt which is thereby projected through the aperture in the member 1, as

shown more particularly in Fig. 2. The member 10 of the bolt is adapted to engage a hole in the upper section of the pump rod, while the lower section of the pump rod is secured in the aperture 2 by means of the threaded screw 3. On the outer end of the section 10 is a hand hold 13 for operating the bolt The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: lVhen the coupler is in position and it is desired to uncouple the rod, the bolt member 10 is withdrawn from the casing 7 and turned down in the position shown in Fig. 3. This looks the bolt in its retracted position and uncouples the two sections of the pump rod. \Vhencver it is desired to reeouple the two members the bolt is projected, and the member 10 is engaged with the upper section of the pump rod. By reason of the arrangement of the pivot 11 and the breaking point of the bolt sections 10 and 10 it is necessary to withdraw the bolt in the casing or move the same longitudinally therein before the outer end of the section 10 can be uncoupled, and it is impossible to remove the outer section 10 from its coupling position except by imparting a longitudinal movement to the bolt, and after said bolt has been moved longitudinally it is held in its uncoupled position by forcing the outer end or section 10 do\\"nwardly so that the inner terminal of said section straddles the rear end of the casing 7 and consequently holds the section 10 inwardly in the casing against the action of the spring 12. By forming the bolt sections out of round material the device can be manufactured very cheaply and should one of the parts become disabled the same can be readily renewed.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a pump coupler made in accordance with my invention, while it is simple in construction, is ellicient in operation and may be easily attached to the pump rod and easily disconnected from one member thereof whenever it is desired to uncouple the parts.
I claim 1. In a pump rod coupling, a member adapted to be connected to a pump rod section and provided with an opening therein, a tubular men'iber secured to the first member with its bore in alinement with the opening, a pin comprising two sections pivotally secured to each other and movable in the tubular member and the opening, said tubular member being adapted to receive the pivotally connected ends of the pin sections so as to hold said pin sections in lengthwise relation, the spring disposed in the tubular member and bearing at one end against said tubular member and adapted to hold one end of one of the pin sections outwardly of the opening in said first member, the other of said pin sections being adapted to be dis posed across the tubular member to hold the first mentioned pin section inwardly in the tubular member.
2. In a pump coupling, an angular member having an arm provided with an opening adapted to receive a pump rod section, means for securing said arm to a pump rod, said member having a second arm provided with an opening extending at right angles to the opening of the first arm, a tubular member threaded on said second arm and provided with an end wall having an opening therein, a coupling member consisting of two rod sections movable in the tubular member and pivotally connected to each other, one of said sections being movable through the opening in said second arm and adapted to extend through a second pump rod section and the other section being movable through the opening in the end wall of said tubular member, said sections being pivotally connected to each other so that their engaging ends will normally lie within the tubular member whereby said sections will be maintained in lengthwise relation and a spring disposed in said tubular member and adapted to hold said coupling member in a locking position.
