DAMPER.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM S. MUM- FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,-
State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Damper, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to devise a novel construction of a damper by the employment of which I am enabled to effect a large saving in the fuel consumption and wherein the passage of the waste products of combustion through the exit from the furnace or stove may be accurately controlled thereby producing a condition within the furnace or stove which will cause the consumption of a large part of the gases which ordinarily escape unconsumed to the atmosphere.
With the above and other objects in view which will more clearly appear in the detail description, my present invention consists of a novel construction of a damper wherein means are provided for varying as desired the damper opening, the amount of such opening being visibly indicated exteriorly of the stack or pipe within which the damper is located.
It further consists of a novel manner of forming a damper and guide member with which coacts means for controlling the opening in the damper and for indicating the amount of such opening.
It further consists of a novel construction of a damper mechanism including novel means for guiding the members which control the opening in the damper.
It further consists of a novel construction of a handle, and novel means for securing the same in operative communication with respect to the damper.
It further consists of other novel features of construction all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown herein embodiments thereof which are at present preferred by me since I have found that the same give in actual practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the instrumentalities of which my invention consists may be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the exact arrangements and organizations of these instrumentalities as herein set forth.

Referring to the drawings :-1 designates the main damper member or disk which is of such diameter as to have a working fit within the pipe or conduit within which it is located.
2 and 3 are deflector disks located on opposite sides of the disk 1 and secured in position by means of fastening devices 4 provided with nuts 5, it being seen that spacing members (i and 7 are employed in order that the deflectors 2 and 3 will be maintained at a desired distance from the central damper disk 1. The disk 1 is provided with an opening 8 therethrough which is controlled by the valve plates or members 5) and 10 which are pivotally mounted on a pivot pin 11 carried by the damper member 1.
12 is a link, one end of which is pivoted at 13 to the valve member 9 while the opposite end thercof is pivoted at 14: to an operating rod 15.
16 is a link one end of which is pivoted at 17 to the valve member 10, while the other end thereof is pivoted at l l. to the operating member 15. The operating member 15 is provided with a threaded extension 18 which extends through a guide member 19 preferably formed from the same blank of material as that from which the central damper member l is formed, said guide member being provided with a slot 20 extending longitudinally therethrough.
21 is an indicator or pointer carried by the member 15 and adapted to travel over the calibrations 22 along one side of the slot 20.
23 is a similar pointer or indicator carried by the member 15 and adapted to travel in the slot 20 and extending in a direction opposite to that of the pointer 21 so as to travel over the calibrations 2 1 on the side of the slot 20 opposite to that of the calibrations 22, thereby enabling me to provide a construction in which the position of the members 9 and 10 may be accurately determined by the positions of the pointers 21 and 23. The guide 19 at its outer end is downwardly deflected as indicated at 25, then laterally as indicated at 26, and then upwardly as indicated at 27 such upward extension being apertured to provide for the threaded extension 18 passing therethrough.
28 is a nut having engagement with the threaded extension 18 and retained between the extensions 25 and 27 of the member 19 so that by manipulating the nut 28 the damper members 8 and 10 may be opened or closed as desired.
The opposite side of the damper 1 preferably in alinement with the member 19, is cut and deflected to form the upwardly extending portions 29 and the downwardly extending portions 30 and is also cut away to form a slot 21, the purpose of this being to permit the spindle 32 of the handle to pass between the members 29 and 30, said spindle being provided with a lug 33 which is adapted to turn within the slot 31.
34 is a washer mounted on the spindle 32 and 35 is a spring, one end of which abuts against the grasping portion 36 of the handle, while the other end thereof abuts against the conical face 37 of the member 34. The damper is cut away in such a manner that an abutment 38 is formed against which lug 33 will engage when the handle is in assembled position as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. In order that the valve members 9 and 10 will not become distorted or deflected, due to the suction or other causes, I provide members 39 carried by the disk 1 so that the valve members 9 and 10 are accurately guided with respect to the damper member 1. The members 9 and 10 are cut away in order to provide an opening 40 which provides for the passage of a minimum quantity of products of combustion, it being apparent that the shape, size or contour of such opening may vary in accordance with the requirements met with in practice.
In some cases, owing to working conditions, it is impractical to employ the handle 36 and its adjuncts in conjunction with the guide 19, and in such cases a portion of the damper 1 is provided with an extension which is bent upon itself to form a pivot 41 adapted to extend into a wall of the conduit in which the damper is located. In conjunction with the construction seen in Fig. 5, I form the guide member 19 a difierent manner, the same being formed of the blank as the damper 1 or being formed separately therefrom as indicated at 42 in Fig. 6 and secured to the damper member 1 in any desired manner. The operating member 15 and its adjuncts are constructed in a manner similar to that seen in the other figures of the drawing, but the member 42 is provided with the lateral extensions 43 which form the grasping handle for turning the damper within the conduit in which it is located. The grasping portion 43 is provided with a slot 44 in which is located the adjusting nut 28, the operation of which will be apparent from the foregoing. By manipulating the adjusting nut 28 the damper members 9 and 10 will be open or closed as desired and such opening will be visibly in cheated by the position of the pointers 21 and 23 relatively to the calibrations 22 and 24. When the damper is inserted in the pipe it is simply necessary to form an opening in one side of the pipe so that the guide 19 will extend therethrough and form an opening in the opposite side thereof for the insertion of the spindle 32. In inserting the spindle 32 the handle 36 is forced toward the damper member 31 so that the lug 33 of the spindle 32 will pass into the aperture 31 then by giving the grasping handle a half turn the lug 33 will engage the abutment 38 and be locked in position so that if desired such as when fires are being freshly fired the damper member 1 and its adjuncts may be rotated to open position by manipulation of the grasping handle 36. When conditions are such that there is not room for the guide member 19 and the grasping member 36 Iemploy a construction such as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 5 and 6, it being apparent that in this construction the damper members 9 and 10 will be regulated in a similar manner to that already described, the only difference being that the guide for the member 15 forms a grasping handle to rotate the damper 1 and 3 its adjuncts. The pivot for the opposite side of the damper is formed as is seen in Fig. 5 by simply providing the same with an ex tension as described.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a damper which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the state ment of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a damper of a central disk having a centrally located opening therethrough, outer disks secured to and spaced from the central disk, two valve members pivotally carried by the. central disk and adapted to cover said opening, the inner sides of said valve members being cut away to form, when closed, a centrally located opening, and means for moving said valve members toward or away from each other to vary the size of the opening formed therebetween.
2. The combination in a damper, of a central disk having an opening therethrough, imperforate disks on opposite sides of the central disk and spaced therefrom and of less diameter than the central disk, valve members mounted on the central disk and forming, when closed, a predetermined centrally located opening through which the furnace gases may pass, an actuating member operatively connected with said valve members, and means carried by said actuating member for registering the movement imparted to the valve members.
3. The combination in a damper, of a cen tral disk having an opening therethrmigh, outer disks secured to and spaced from the central disk and of less diameter than the central disk, valve members movably carried by the central disk, a threaded rod connected to the valve members, a guide therefor, means for preventing rotation of the said rod, and devices coacting with said rod to move the latter and thereby control the valve members.
4. The combination in a damper, of a cen tral disk having an opening therethrough and having a portion deflected to form a slotted guide, outer disks secured to the central disk and spaced therefrom valve members movably carried by the central disk to control the opening therein, a threaded rod connected with the valve members, indicating devices secured to the rod and extending through the guide opening, and means for causing the longitudinal movement of said rod.
5. The combination in a damper, of a central disk having an opening therethrough and having a portion deflected to form a slotted guide, valve members movably carried by the central disk to control the opening therein, a threaded rod connected with the valve members, indicating devices secured to the rod and extending through the guide opening, means for causing the longitudinal movement of said rod, and imperforate disks on opposite sides of the central disk and spaced therefrom and of less diameter than the central disk.
6. The combination in a damper, of a central disk, having an opening theret-hrough, disks secured to and spaced from the central disk on opposite sides thereof and of less diameter than the central disk, valve members carried by the central disk, a guide having a slot therethrough secured to the central disk, and provided with calibrations on opposite sides of the slot, a threaded rod connected with the valve members and passing through said guide, indicators secured to the rod and extending through said slot and adapted to travel in proximity to the calibrations, and a nut carried by said rod and said guide preventing relative longitudinal movement of said nut with respect thereto.
7 The combination in a damper, of a cent'al disk having an opening therethrough, imperforate disks on opposite sides of the central disk and spaced therefrom and of less diameter than the central disk, valve members for controlling said opening, actuating means for said valve members, said central disk having an aperture therein, a handle having a spindle provided with a lug adapted to interlock with said apertiu'e, an abutment on the spindle and a spring between said abutment and the grasping portion of the handle.
8. The combination in a damper, of a central disk having an opening therethrough, valve members pivoted to the central disk and controlling said opening, links pivoted to said valve members, a rod connected with said links, means for actuating said rod to impart movement to the valve members, disks of less diameter than the central disk and on opposite sides thereof, and means for securing said disks in assembled position and in spaced relation with respect to each other.
