Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN OnUMr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Loudonville, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have made certain new and useful Improvements in lVireSplicers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in wire splicers, and the object of the invention is to provide, a simple, compact, and easily operated device of the character specified, for quickly splicing wires, and by means of which a splice may be made by one not necessarily familiar with the method.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement folded; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the improvement unfolded; Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged partial plan views, showing the operation in different stages, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the splice.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a bar composed of two sections A and B, one of which A, is provided at one end with a pair of laterally extending spaced lugs or cars C, and the other with a single similar lug or ear D, which fits between the ears C. The cars C and D are transversely perforated and a pivot pin E is passed through the registering perforations, for hinging the sections together. The arrangement of the lugs C and D provides a rule joint, permitting the sections to take a position in alinement 01' superposed. Each section is rounded on its outer face, from near the hinge to the outer end, and is flat on its inner face, so that the sections lit smoothly and closely when superposed, and the rounded faces form a convenient hand hold.
One section, A in the present instance is provided, near its free end, with a pivoted loop or bail F, which is adapted to swing over the adjacent end of the other section, when the sections are superposed, to lock the said sections in such position.
Each of the sections is longitudinally grooved, at G on its inner face, the groove extending from the outer end to a point adjacent to the hinge, and the grooves G 00- operate to form a longitudinal bore or recess when the sections are folded. Each of the grooves G is intersected at its inner end, by a transverse groove or recess, consisting of two portions H and I, of unequal cross section. The portion H is of greater cross section than the portion I and extends from the side edge of the section across the groove G. The grooves H and I of each section are coaxial and register with the grooves of the other section when the sections are supposed as shown in Fig. 1.
In using the improvement, the end N of one wire, M in the present instance is doubled back upon the body of the wire to form a loop, and the loop is inserted in the groove ll of the section A, with the end of the loop extending partially into the groove G. The end of the wire K is inserted in the groove I of the section A, passed through the loop and bent at right angles to the body of the wire, and is held in the groove G. The sec tion B is then folded onto the section A and the loop or bail F is swung over the end of the section B, to hold the sections together. The device is now revolved with the bodies of the wires K and M as an axis, and it will be evident that the end 0 of the wire K will be wrapped tightly onto the body of the wire K. The friction between the end 0 and the groove G will draw the coils tightly o nthe body and the said coils will feed the wire K laterally. When the end 0 has been wrapped, the device is unfolded and re versed, the end N of the wire M now being placed in the groove G.
It will be evident. that the end of the wire K might be wound on wire M to form a conducting wire splice if desired.
I claim:
1. A device of the character specified, comprising a pair of similar sections, a rule joint connecting the sections, each section having its outer face rounded to form a handle when the sections are superposed, and having its inner face flat to fit the face of the other section, each of the said faces having a groove extending from its outer end longitudinally inward, and having a transverse groove at the inner end of the first named groove, said transverse 'roove being of greater cross section at one side of the longitudinal groove, and a loop pivoted to the outer end of one section, and fitting over the adjacent end of the other section to hold the said sections together.
2. A device of the characterspecified, comprising a pair of similar sections, a rule joint connecting the sections, each section having its outer face rounded to form a handle when the sections are superposed, and having its inner face flat to fit the face of the other section, each of said faces having a groove extending from its outer end lon gitudinally inward, and having a transverse groove at the inner end of the first named groove, said transverse groove being of greater cross section at one side of the longitudinal groove, and means for locking the sections together.
3. A device of the character specified, comprising a plurality of sections hinged toether at one end, each section having its lnner face provided with a transverse groove near its inner end, and a longitudinal groove extending from the outer end and intersecting the transverse groove, said transverse groove being of greater cross section at one end and means for holding the sections superposed.
4. A device of the character specified, comprising a plurality of sections hinged together at one end, each section having its inner face provided with a transverse groove near its inner end, and a longitudinal groove extending from the outer end and intersecting the transverse groove, and means for holding the sections superposed.
5. A device of the character specified, comprising a plurality of sections hinged together at one end, each section having its inner face provided with a transverse groove near its inner end, and a longitudinal groove extending from the outer end and intersect ing the transverse groove, said transverse groove being of greater cross section at one end.
6. A device of the character specified, com prising a plurality of sections hinged together at one end, each section having its inner face provided with a transverse groove near its inner end, and a longitudinal groove extending from the outer end and intersecting the transverse groove.
7 A device of the character specified, comprising a plurality of sections each having a transverse groove near one end, and a longitudinal groove extending from the other end to the transverse groove, the grooves of one section registering with the grooves of the other section when the sections are superposed.
8. A device of the character specified, comprising a plurality of sections hinged together at one end to fold upon each other, one of the sections having a transverse groove near the hinged end, and a longitudinal groove extending from the other end to the transverse groove.
