To all wit om it may concern: I Be it known that I, James S. PATTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago. county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint and Varnish Romovers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in paint or varnish removers and has for its object the provision of an article of this character, which shall be economical and etlicient in use and comparatively non-corrosive to the hands.
The invention consists in the composition hereinaftmdescribed and claimed.
The preferred method of preparing the composition consists in mixing together one pound of pahniti'e acid or its derivatives; one-half pound of sugar of lead; one pound of calcium phenate; one-halt gallon of we tone or alcohol: these ingredients are thoroughly mixed together, forming a liquid, which is ready for use. The palmitie aeid unites with the sugar of lead to form a lead palmitate which tends to render the mixture non-corrosive to the hands. Either acetone or alcohol may be used as the solvent in conjunction with the henzol, hutacetone is preferred, seeming to give somewhat better results. This liquid is employed in any of the usual or desired manners for removal of paints or varnishes, and the like.
\Vhile I have set forth the preferred ingredicnts, proportions thereof and method of preparing the mixture, these are capable 'of variations and modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact ingredients, proportions of ingredients, or method of mixing the same, but desire to avail myselfof such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having; described my invention what- I elaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A paint or varnish remover, the constituent ingredients of which are calciumphenate palmitic acid; su or of lead; benzol and another solventysufistantially as described.
2. A paint or varnish remover, the constituent ingredients of which are one pound of calcium phenate, one pound of palmitic acid; one-half mum] of sugar of Ieadrone-half gallon of benzol; and one-half gallon of acetone, substantially as described. y
