Description

ifinitrd some gallant @Bflfline.
e. BALFoUR, or MAUSTOLLWISGONSIN, ASSIGNOR To HIMSELF AND B. BOORMAN, or SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 101,970, dated Aprilflil, 1870.
mrnovnmnnr in oos-me MATERIAL.
The schedule referred to in theae'I-etten Patent and making part of the lame To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, M. G.- BALFOUR, of Mauston,
[county of Juneau and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roofin' Material; and I. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
I take coal tar, pitch, or raw coal-tar, about one barrel, about one-third of a barrel of iron paint or pulverized iron ore, about three barrels of sand, pulverized clay, or any other earthy or mineral substance, and about ten pounds of sulphur, and put these articles in a caldron or pot, and heat andmix well together.
If I do not want to make the. composition hard I leave the sulphur out, as that is only a hardening material, and when the composition is well mixed I'turn it into wet pans of the required size, and when cool I take it out and pack it up ready for use; or when it is required to beused with felt or cloth I turn it onto the felt, cloth, or paper, and let it stick to the cloth or felt.
Sometimes I turn the compound onto the roof and spread it over the required thickness, and let it stick to the roof, and sometimes I cover the roof first with felt, cloth, or paper, and turn the compound onto it.
When I mold the article in wet pans I put the squares onto the roof, and sear or cement the joints with a red-hot iron, and then it becomes solid and permanent. s
This article I use for sidewalks and streets.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A compound composed of brimstone, iron ore, coal-tar, and sand or clay, in about the proportions named, when heated and well mixed, and cast in wet .pans the required size for use.
2. The process of covering a,roof with a composition composed and manufactured as above described, the joints cemented with a hot iron, as above described.
