BEVERLY M. ROBINSON, OF C MEASURING DEVICE ALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA.
FOR POWDER-BOXES.
Application filed May 24,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BEVERLY M. ROBIN- SON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Calgary, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Measuring Devices for Powder-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to boxes, and more particularly to the class of measuring devices for powder boxes, cans or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this cha "actor in which the contents of the box may be divided into equal proportions, so that each proportion maybe discharged from the box, without the delivery of the remaining portion therein, thus assuring the uniform charging of gun shells in the loading thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which a closure member for a box or can Will enable the successive opening of the several compartments Within the latter on revolving the closure member upon the box or can, thereby permitting the contents of the respective compartments in the box to be discharged therefrom independently of each. other.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the measuring element thereof is carried by the cover or lid for the box, so that when applying the cover thereto, the contents thereof may be divided into equal proportions, whereby the same may be discharged from the body independently of each other.
A still further objectof the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a box constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the box. Fig. 4 is a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
1911. Serial No. 629,124.
I horizontal sectional view on the line 4- 1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the measuring device removed from the box.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates a cylindrical body forming a powder box or can, the same being open at its top, and is preferably constructed from metal, although it may be made from any other suitable material and differently shaped, if desired.
Removably fitted within the body 5 is a measuring device including a divider or pocketed core formed of a plurality of radially disposed wings 6, the same being united at their inner longitudinal edges and provide charging cells or compartments 7, within the body 5, when the core or divider is placed therein. The divider or core is of a length correspondingly with respect to the length of the body 5, and is adapted to rest upon the bottom of the latter, so that the contents of the body will be divided and entirely fill the cells or compartments 7 of said divider or core.
Integral with and rising centrally from the divider or core is a stem 8, upon which is loosely mounted a cover or lid 9, the same being provided with a depending flange 10 adapted to fit exteriorly about the open end of the body 5, and this cover is adapted to be revolubly supported on the said body for closing its open end. The cover or lid 9 is formed with a V-shaped opening forming a discharge vent 11, the same being correspondingly shaped to each of the cells or compartments 7, and on the turning of the cover or lid 9 is adapted to register with the said compartments or cells of the device, so that powder or other material, confined within the body 5, may be dispensed therefrom, without allowing the discharge of the contents of the remaining cells or compartments in the box.
Connected with the cover or lid 9 by means of a hinge 12 is a closure member or [lap 13 correspondingly shaped with respect to the vent 1'1 and adapted to normally close the same, the said flap or closure member 13 being formed with a central fin or web 14, rising therofi-(nn, the same containing an aperture 15 near its outer edge, and in which engages one end of a wire spring member 16, the opposite end of which is fixed to the outer face of the cover or lid 9, the spring member being adapted to automatically swing the closure member or flap 13 to open position, when the vent 11 has been brought into register or alinement with any one of the compartments or cells 7 in the divider, thereby permitting the free dispensing of the contents from the respective compartments or cells.
Mounted upon the stem 8 spaced from the cover or lid 9 is a combined lid closer and indicator, comprising a disk 17 provided with radial notches or substantially V- shaped slots l8,v which are adapted to aline with the centers of the compartments or cells 7 inthe divider, and in which looks the fin or web 14 on the flap or closure member 13, when the latter swings to open position, thereby preventing the revolving of the cover or lid 9 on the body 5 on the opening of any one of the respective compartments or cells 7 in the divider. When the closure memberor flap 13 has been pressed downwardly to closed position, and on slight rotary movement of the cover or lid 9, the upper edge of the fin or web 14 will abut against the inneror under face of the disk 17, thereby sustaining the said lid or closure member 13 in closed position, thus closing the discharge vent 11 in the cover or lid 9 to prevent the dispensing of the contents of the can.
The measuring device is useful for proportioning the powder contents of the can, so that equal proportions of powder may be discharged into gun shells or cartridges for the charging thereof. However, it is of course obvious that the measuring device may be used equally as well for other materials, such as for separating condiments contained Within a dispensing can or box. From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood, without requiring a more extended explanation, and therefore the same has. been omitted.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a receptacle, of a measuring device, comprising a. partitioning element removably insertible in the re ceptacle, a revoluble cover connected with said element and adapted to close the receptacle, and having a discharge opening therein adapted to aline with the spaces formed by the partitioning element, a hinged flap carried by the cover and adapted to close the opening therein, means spaced from the cover and acting upon the flap for sustaining the same closed and provided with slots permitting the flap to swing to open position on the revolving of the cover upon the receptacle.
2. The combination with a receptacle, of
a measuring device, comprising a partitioning element removably insertible in the receptacle, a revoluble cover connected with said element and adapted to close the re ceptacle, and having a discharge opening therein adapted to aline with the spaces formed by the partitioning element, a hinged flap carried by the cover and adapted to close the opening therein, means spaced from the cover and acting upon the flap for sustaining the same closed and provided with slots permitting the flap to swing to open position on the revolving of the cover upon the receptacle, and means acting upon the flap to automatically open the same.
