Description
and admittingthe same,
' waited gister @anni @biblica CHARLES H. WIGHT, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Letters Patent No. 101,953, dated April'ln, 1 870; fmtcdated February l5, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN INKSTANDS.
The Schedule referredto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
mma-
To all whom- 'it 'may `conce/rn Beit known that I, CHARLES H. WIGHT, of Baltifollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
vlreference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in whieh- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved inlistand;
Figure 2 is a plan of case and passage; and
Figures 3 and 4 are perspective views of the passage and case on a reduced scale.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a fountain or reservoir for ink, in suoli `a manner that the volume or main body of the ink will beheld separately or disconnected from the ink'in'nse, when necessary, by means of device that will be hereinafter described, into a well or'reservoir, so made that only a limited quantity can be admitted from, the fountain; and that the ink thus `delivered from -the fountain does not returirto the same to vitiate the-main body of the ink, but remains separate therefrom until consumed.
In order to enable others skilled in theart to which niy. invention apperta-ins to make and use the same, I1
Will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which show a longitudinal vertical section of my inkstand.
A represents the base, made vof wood metal, or other suitable material, upon which is secured a case or frame, B.
In the rear portion of the case B is an aperture, in which is inserted a collar, a, projecting downward from the bottom of a fountain or reservoir, C.
This fountain may be made of glass or other snitable material, and around its collar a is a plate, l), which is secured to the case 'B by means of dowel-pin e and set-screw d, or other mechanical devices answering the same purpose, thus rmly securing the fountain to the case and bedL A cap, D, is fastened permanently on top of the fountain G by cement or. other material.
Through the bottom of the fountain O is an opening, which is stopped from underneath by a valvestopper, f, having a plunger, E, extending' upward through the center of the fountain and the cap D, and its upper end provided with a detachable screwhead, G.
Between the screw-head G and cap D, around the plunger, is a spiral spring, le', which holds the plunger up, closing the valve.
' In the cap D is also a vent, covered with a lid, g, for filling the fountain without-removing the cap.
- vThe plunger E and valve f may be of glass, hard rubber, or other suitable material. If of/glass, the valve should be tipped with rubber.
When .the screw-head G is pressed down the valve lis opened, and the ink flows through the passage H into the well or reservoir I, at the frontend of thc case B. v
In the well I is to be inserted a movable mouthpiece, for convenience in cleaning.
J, constructed in the'following manner:`
At the side thereof is a double-acting spring cover,
' At a suitable point in the case B is asmall upright I tube, lt, through whichis passed a rod, m, hayinga collar, a, at its lower end, within the case, and a collar, o, above the tube, said collar resting on the same.-
Above the collar o the rodm is curved, and the cover .I attachcd to its outer-end.
Between the collar n and the under side of the case B, around the rod m, is a spiral: spring, t', which holds the rod down.
The mouth-piece above mentioned being inserted in the well I, the cover J vis lraised up and turned directly over the same, when the spring/l forces it down tight on the mouth-piece. Inlike manner it can be taken off and turned to one side when the inkstand is inuse. v
The quantity of ink admitted from the fountain vC to the well 1 being small, is consumed before deterioration occurs; that remaining in the reservoir, being protected against the admission of dirt and evaporation, remains limpid. v
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The passage H, constructed substantially as de scribed, in combination with case B, fountain C, and movable'mouth-piece.
2. lhe plunger E, provided with spring h and valve f, seated. from below, arranged in combination with fountain C, substantially as andfor the'purpose set forth.
3. The vdouble-acting cover J, operated by means of the rod m, collars a o, spring t', and tubelc, on the case B, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I afiix my signature in presencel of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. WIGH'I. Witnesses:
JOSEPH B. STAFFORD, .Tous It. SnnMULLEn.
