To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. Koss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mojave, in the county of Kern, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Music-Leaf Turner; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to music leaf turner, and it may be said to consist in the novel and improved construction, arrangement and combination of the parts of the device, as will be apparent from the description and claims hereinafter.

Objects of the invention are to provide a novel device of the class specified which is simple in construction and economical to manufacture, strong and durable in use, ef fective in action, and in which the parts may be readily assembled or demounted.

A further object of the invention is to provide a novel construction for the device which admits of its being actuated by mechanism of a piano or the like to which it may be operatively connected.

Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description of the preferred form of construction in which the invention may beembodied, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a partly broken away perspective view of a device having the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the spring metal member provided with toothed jaws, Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of a piano or the like with the music leaf turner mounted thereon, Fig. 4 is a. partly broken plan view of the open-ended box and the spring metal member provided with toothed jaws, and Fig. 5 is a partly sectional view of a portion of the arm.

The base 2 of the device may consist of hardwood and it is preferably formed, as shown in Fig. 1, with a recessed portion 3 centrally thereof. Felt 4 may be provided on the bottom of the base 2 to obviate any marring of the polished surface of the piano or other musical instrument on which the device may be placed. thereon the gear wheel 7 at the front thereof and the segmental gear wheel 8 at the rear thereof and also the intermediate gear wheel 9 which is in mesh with the gear wheels'7 and 8. On the base 2 may be mounted a cover 10 which may be secured to the base in any suitable manner. An upright shaft 11 detachably connected to the segmental gear wheel 8 may pass freely through an opening in cover 10 and it may have mounted thereon the crank arm 12 which is adapted to be adjusted in position angularly and longitudinally of the axis of the shaft 11 and may be locked in position thereon by means of set screw 13. To admit of operat ing the crank arm 12 through the instrumentality of existing piano mechanism, an extensible link 14 may have its ends pivotally mounted in forked bearing members 15 and 16 respectively secured to the crank arm 12 and to the bar 17 which latter is operatively connected, in a well-known manner, with either the soft or center foot pedal of the piano. The extensible link 14 may consist of the rod 18 slidably fitted within sleeve 19, and the set screw 20 for retaining the rod 18 and sleeve 19 in adjusted position.

To the gear wheel. 7 is detachably connected the arm 21 which passes through cover 10 and extends outwardly beyond the base 2. The free end of the arm 21 carries an open-ended box 22 in which is slidably disposed a substantially V-shaped member 23 of spring metal formed to provide projections 24 and abutments 25 on the sides thereof near its ends and toothed jaws 26 having the free end portions thereof extending toward each other and preferably serrated. The end 27 of the member 23 remote from the jaws 26 may be covered with felt; also strips of corrugated felt 28 may be secured near the sides on the top of cover 10. If desired, the end portion of the arm 21 may be constructed as shown in Fig. 5 to permit turning thereof through 180 degrees to reverse the member 23.

It will be apparent that the device may be connected for use on any style of piano by first raising the panel 31 and then screwing the forked bearing member 16 in place on the bar 17 and adjusting the extensible link 14 and the crank arm 12 on the upright shaft 11, after which the panel may be let down to rest on the corrugated felt 28 on the cover but clear of the arm 21. As will be understood, pressure on the foot pedal to which the bar 17 is operatively connected causes the bar to move forwardly and, by means of extensible link 14, rotate shaft 11 to operate the gears 8, 9 and 7 to swing the arm 21 to have the jaws 26 strike against the music leaf 29 near the lower right hand corner thereof, whereupon by reason of the impact with the panel 31, the member 23 moves rearwardly in the box 22 until the abutments 25 strike the forward edges of the box and the jaws are consequently closed together and grip the music leaf; the pro j ections 24 moving into the notches 32 in the inner walls of the box 22. On releasing the footpedal the bar 17 will move rearwardly so that the arm will be swung through substantially 180 degrees and the music leaf 29 will be turned over to the position of the music leaf 30 and released by the jaws 26 by reason of the impact of end 27 of the member 23 with the panel 31-the member 23 moves in the box 22 until the abutments 25 strike the edges of the box and the jaws 26 are permitted to separate from each other and thereby release the music leaf and the latter being in an inclined posit-ion and flexible permits the escape forwardly past its lower edge of the arm 21 and the member 23, as will be understood.

While one form of construction in which the invention may be embodied has been particularly illustrated and described, various changes and modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art and the right is therefore reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim 1. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a base, an upright shaft carried thereby, an arm extending outwardly from said base and operatively connected with said shaft to be rotated thereby, means carried by said arm and adapted to grip a music leaf, said means rendered operative by impact against one end portion thereof and rendered inoperative by impact against the other end portion thereof, a bar operatively connected with a foot pedal in piano mechanism, and means operatively connecting said shaft with said bar, substantially as described.

In a device of the class specified, the combination of a bar operatively connected with a foot-pedal, a base, an upright shaft carried thereby, a crank arm on said shaft, a link having one end thereof pivotally connected with said crank arm and carrying at the other end thereof means for connecting the link with said bar, an arm extending outwardly from said base and operatively connected with said shaft to be rotated thereby, an open-ended box carried at the end of said arm, a substantially V- shaped spring metal member movably mounted in said box, said member adapted, by impact, to grip a music leaf, substantially as described.

In a device of the class specified, the combination of an arm, means to rotate said arm, means carried by said arm and adapted to grip a music leaf, said means includ ing an open-ended box at the end of said arm and a substantially V-shaped spring metal member movably mounted in said box, said member provided with jaws and having abutments near its ends, said means rendered operative by impact against said jaws at one end of the member and rendered inoperative by impact against the other end of the member, substantially as described. 4:. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a base, an upright shaft carried thereby, a crank arm adjustably mounted on said shaft, an arm extending outwardly from said base and operatively c011- nected with said shaft to be'rotated thereby, a movable bar operatively connected with a foot pedal in piano mechanism, an extensible link pivotally connected between said crank arm and said bar, an open-ended boX at the end of said arm, and a substantially V-shaped spring metal member movably mounted in said box, said member provided with jaws and having abutments near its ends, substantially as described.
