AEROPLANE OR FLYING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5,1912.
Application filed June 20, 1910. Serial No. 567,775.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN JAc Uns BOUR- CART, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Kolmar, Alsace, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Aeroplanes or F lying-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in aeroplanes or flying machines and it consists in a jointed framework composed of four triangular framesa front, a rear, and left and right side frames-arranged with their apices meeting at a point, and hinged together in such a manner that the rear frame can swing, in conjunction alternately with the right and the left side frame, on two axes which cross each other at the said meeting point.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view in orthogonal projection of the framework, the arrow indicating the direction of flight, and Figs. 2 and 3 show the framework in parallel perspective, the rear triangular frame being shown in Fig. 2 tilted upward on the left together with the left side frame (turning on the axis m-n), and in Fig. 3 tilted upward on the right together with the right side frame (turning on the axis 0p).
The hinges it link together the four parts of the framework-the'head or front memher a, the rear member I), and the left and right side members 0 and d-in such a manner that the two intersecting axes of oscillation result. When spread out flat all the members of the frameworklie in one plane (Fig. 1). The contour of the framework may be varied in any desired manner. The wings or supporting surfaces are mounted on the bars 6 and f. The rear member 5 is caused to swing alternately on the axes mn-, and 0-19 by means of a motor or by the muscular exertion of the aviator himself, and this produces the alternate left and right stroke of the wings by means of which the aeroplane is propelled through the air.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A jointed framework for aeroplanes or flying machines, composed of four triangular members arranged with their apices meeting at a point and hinged together so that the rear member can swing, in conjunction alternately with the right and the left side member, on two axes which intersect each other at the said meeting point substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEAN JACQUES BOURGART.
