PERCY S. BAILEY, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SAFETY-STOP FOR GAS-CAPSZ hero nes.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PERCY S. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, county of Essex, State of Massahave invented cert-air new and useful Improvements in Safety-Stops for Gas- Caps, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to electric arclamps, and especially to those having an arc-inclosing inner globe. It is customary 'to provide such globes with a cap containing tortuous passages for the escape of the gases of combustion rising from the arc. The cap rests loosely on the globe, having flanges to center it and prevent it from lateral dis- It is held down solely by gravity and is located far enough below the tripping platform of the lamp to give room for lifting it in order to disengage the globe when the lamp is to be trimmed.
One mode of suspending an arc lamp is by means of a hanger containing an automatic cut-out, which opens the circuit when the lamp is lowered for trimming and closes it again when the lamp is pulled up into place. These cut-outs usually require the lamp to be lifted smartly in order to etfcct a sure engagement of the contacts and the automatic locking devices. It is found that the shock of this forcible closure is liable to toss the gas cap up against the trimming platform, and when it drops back on the globe it is liable to break the same. The object of my invention is to prevent such breakage, by means of a stop which will resist the tendency of the gas cap to fly upward under the conditions above explained. The stop is made adjustable, and is also capable of being swung bodily out of the way when the lamp trimmer wishes to raise the globe.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a front elevation of an arc lamp tripping platform and gas cap, with my safety stop applied to the platform; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stop.
Patented Mar. 5, 11912 The gas cap 1 may be of any desired construction. It is usually hung by an ear 2 on a hook 3 depending from the tripping plat; form 4. A slide 5 is applied to each leg 6 of the tripping platform, the slides being longitudinally slot-ted to receive the clamping screws 7 entering tapped holes in said legs. This construction renders the slides vertically adjustable on said platform. The stop proper is a U-shaped strip whose 11 per ends are pivoted to the lower ends 0 the slides by means of the screws 8. The stop hangs below the platform, being retained in a normal position by means of the lugs 9 which project from the arms 10 of, the stop and abut against the front of the platform structure. The lower portion 11 of the stop, connecting its arms 10, lies in a plane parallel with the top of the gas cap. In the drawing the cap is shown somelittle distance below the stop, but when the globe 12 isin place it raises the ap to within a fraction of an inch of said stop.
To permit him to remove the globe, the lamp trimmer swings the' stop up to the dot-ted line position in Fig; 1, which leaves plenty of room under the tripping platform for raising the gas cap and disengaging the trimmer that the stop is properly positioned.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, T have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent. the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. in an incloscd arc lamp, the combination with the tripping platform and a loose gas cap therebelow, of vertically movable slides adjustably secured to said platform, and provided with lugs adapted to abut and a U-shaped stop for said cap pivotally against said platform. attached to said slides. In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set 2. In an inclosed arc lamp, the combinamy hand this twentieth day of July, 1909. 5 tion with the tripping platform and a gas PERCY S. BAILEY.
- cap hung thereon, of slides vertically adjust- "Witnesses able on said platform, and a U-shaped stop JOHN A. MoMANUs, J12, :Eor said cap pivotally attached to saidslides CHARLES A. BARNARD.
