SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
Application filed June 6, 1911. Serial No. 631,581.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garden City, in the county of Nassau, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in scrapers and more particularly to that class adapted for the purpose of scraping the ceilings of rooms.
An object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character which consists of a receptacle in which is mounted an adjustable guide for the purpose of receiving a blade and holding the same in such position within the receptacle that the sides of the walls and corners may be scraped, the said receptacle also having secured thereto a clamp adapted to lock the blade in its various adjusted positions.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a scraper for ceilings which is comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use and readily adjusted.
lVith the above and other objects in view this invention resides in the novel feature of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to he hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved scraper. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 41 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by similar characters of references throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally my improved wall scraper which comprises a substantially rectangular shaped receptacle 11, consisting of opposite side and end walls 12 and 13 connected at their lower edges by a bottom 14. The end walls adjacent their upper sides and ends are apertured as at 15 for the reception of the reduced ends of longitudinally extending bars 16 which are held within the said apertures and against displacement by screws 17 which are threaded in the reduced opposite ends thereof. A transverse supporting bar 18 having longitudinally apertured heads 19 formed upon its opposite ends for engagement with the rods 16 is located within the said receptacle and longitudinally movable therein, while located upon the rod 18 for transverse movement is a sleeve 20 having extending from its opposite ends the depending legs 21 of a U-shaped bracket 22 upon the upper face of which is secured a guide plate 23, the opposite ends of which are bent upon themselves in spaced relation to said plate as indicated by the numeral 2 1 for engagement with the head 25 of the blade or scrapper knife 26. The shank of this knife 26 is reduced at its opposite sides as indicated by the numeral 27 which shank extends through. a slot 28 formed in one of the ends 13, the said slot being sufliciently greater in width than the width of the shank to permit the lateral movement thereof for a purpose to be later disclosed.
A transversely extending bar 29 is secured to the outer wall of the receptacle above the slot 28 and is provided in its opposite ends with threaded apertures 30 for the reception of clamping screws 31. having secured to their upper ends milled heads 32, whereby the said clamping screws may be rotated and moved through said apertures 30, while their opposite ends are swiveled as indicated by the numeral 33 to a clamping bar 34. which extends parallel to the bar 29. This clamping bar upon the proper movement of the screws 31 may be moved into and out of engagement with the lower face of the shank 26 thereby securely retaining the blade or knife within the receptacle and against dis placement.
The terminal of the shank which projects beyond the end wall 13 of the receptacle 10 has removably secured thereto a handle 35, while a thumb screw 36 extends through a threaded boss 37 formed upon the sleeve 20 for engagement with the rod 18 for the purpose of retaining the blade against displacement after it has been laterally adjusted.
It will be obvious from Fig. 3 of the drawings that one of the end walls 13 is cut away as at 38 which permits of the insertion of the hand of the user of the scraper into the receptacle for the purpose of tightening or loosening the thumb screw.
From the foregoing disclosures it will be apparent that upon the loosening of the said screw the clamping bar will be removed from the lower face of the shank which perlnits of the longitudinal movement of the blade through the receptacle owing to the sliding engagement of the rod 18, while upon loosening the thumb screw 36 together with the clamping bar the blade may be moved laterally with respect to the receptacle, which longitudinal and lateral adjustment permits the blade to adapt itself to the sides and corners of the ceiling.
From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that a scraper of the nature described is provided which will fulfil all the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus particularly described this invention what I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is:
1. A scraper such as described comprising a receptacle having a slot formed in one end thereof, a pair of guide rods secured to the ends of the receptacle, a supporting rod slidable upon the guide rods, a guide plate adjustable upon the supporting rod, a blade slidable through the slot formed in the end of the receptacle and engaging said guide, means for clamping the blade against displacement and a handle secured to the blade.
2. The combination in a scraper such as described, of a receptacle, longitudinally extending guide rods secured within the receptacle, a supporting rod slidable upon the said guide rods, a sleeve slidable upon the supporting rod, a U-shaped bracket carried by the sleeve, a guide plate secured to the bracket and provided with bent ends, a thumb screw engaging the sleeve for the purpose of retaining it in its adjusted position, one of the end walls of the receptacle being provided with a slot, a bar secured to the end wall above said slot, a clamping bar adjustably secured to the first mentioned bar, a blade slidable through said slot and provided with a reduced shank and a handle carried by the blade.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
