Description

dilated tatr FREDERICK SHALLER, OF HUDSON, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 101,927, dated April 12,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN COUPLINGS FOR HOSE AND PIPBS.
lIhe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom Iit may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SHALLER, of Hudson, in the county of' Columbia and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Hose or Pipe-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part oi' this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal side elevation of my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, corresponding with fig. 1;
lfigure 3 is' a sectional face view; and
Figure 4 is a view of one end of my coupling.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts `in the several figures.-
This invention relates more especially to the coupling of flexible pipes, the ends of which are provided with ianges; and
It consists in making the coupling ont of two bars, one of which is made in two parts, which part in the middle and are united by a hinge at one end, whereby it is'nabled to be passed over the flange of the pipe. The pin which forms the pivot of said hinge also serves to unite the two bars at one end, while the other ends of the bals are secured by means which will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct hose or pipe-couplings in accordance with my invention, I will proceed to describe the saine with reference to the drawing.
A A' are hose or pipes to be connected, which are provided with flanges a a at their ends.
B B are bars which form the coupling.
The bar B is made with an opening, b, and recess c in the middle, to enable it to be passed over the pipe A, and allow the ange a to rest in the recess c.
One end of this bar is provided with a slotted tailpiecc, d, while thcother cud is provided with cheeks The bar B is made of two parts, which are hinged at one end and allowed to come apart in the middle, whereby it is enabled to be passed over the iiange a', and clamps the pipe Af behind said ilange.
C is a tightening-screw, which also serves the purpose of `uniting the two bar s B B. v
Said tightening-screw is pivoted to the slotted tailpiece l of the bar B, and, passing through the hinged portion of the Vbar'B, also forms the pin for said hinge, and is secured by means of a nut, f.
D is another tightening-screw, which is passed through the hinged bridge g, at the opposite ends ot' the bars B B.
The bridge g is hinged at one end to one of the cheeks c of the bar B, while the other end is rigidly held by a slotted brace, h, which may be hinged, as shown in the drawing, or it may be a spring, one end of which is fastened to the side of the bar B, alongside ot one of the cheeks c, while the other end is provided with a slot, t', to enable it to be slipped over the end` of th'e bridge y, and thereby hold it securely fast.
lo enable the tightening-screw D to act on both parts ot the bar B which are passed between the cheeks c c of the bar B, a strip, j, is fastened to one of those part-s and made to lap over the other, forming a step for the tightening-screw D.
N ow it will be seen that when the bars ot' the coupling are slipped over the pipes to be connected, they will bear against their respective flanges a a', and by operating the tightening-screws C D, can be forced easily together, to form a sufficiently tight joint.
Instead of the tightening-screw D, bridge g, and brace h, a wedge-shaped key passing through the cheeks e e on the ends of the bar B', may be applied with the same effect.
That is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Iatent,`is
l. rlhe combination of the bars B B', tighteningscrew C,and nutf, snbstantiall y as and for the purpose herein described.
2. The tightening-screw D, bridge y, brace h, checks c e, and stripj, in combinationwith the bars B B', tightening-screw O, and nut f, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
\Vitnesscs: FREDERICK SHALLER.
