Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 6, 1910. Serial No. 553,698.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs F. LAOER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anadarko, in the county of Caddo, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Sets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a tool-set and more particularly to the class of tool-operating devices for blacksmiths, machinists or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which a hammer punch or other tool may be adjustably held and operated for performing the required functions thereof without being handled by the user.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be mounted on an anvil whereby it may be operated for actuating a hammer, chisel, die-tool or the like for performing the usual functions required thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicientin operation and inexpensive in the manufacture.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings disclosing the preferred form of embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of an anvil with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4: is an opposite end elevation. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the movable tool support. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the fulcrum arm.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 5 designates generally a support or base block upon which is mounted an anvil 6 of the ordinary well-known construction provided with the usual horn 7 and tail-table or can tension 8, the same being provided with a squared tool socket 9 and also a circular socket 10 the same being alined and in spaced relation to each other. In the squared tool-socket 9 is mounted the lower squared end of a tubular standard 11 which is formed with an integral collar 12 spaced from the squared end thereof, said collar serving as a bearing seat for one end of a coiled expansion spring 13 surrounding the standard 11, and this spring serves to operate upon a tool-carriage or movable tool support slidably mounted upon the standard. The tool support comprises spaced flat arms 14: uniting at their forward ends by a cross connecting piece 15 provided with spaced parallel vertical jaws 16 each carrying a set-screw 17, whereby a tool 18 may be fixedly clamped between said jaws to be operated in a manner as will be hereinafter more fully described. Immediately below the collar 12 and projecting forwardly from the standard 11 is an arm 19 below which is arranged a striker block or die part 20 the same being superimposed upon the upper face of the anvil 6 directly beneath the tool 18 so as to aline with the path of movement thereof and this block 20 is engaged by the lower terminal of a guide rod 21, the same being passed upwardly through suitable openings in the arm 19 and in the arms 1 1 of the tool carriage so that the lat ter may be guided toward and from the part 20 in the operation of the tool. The upper end of the guide rod 21 is inturned and terminates in an eye 22 engaged by the reduced upper threaded terminal 23 of the standard 11 which terminal has threaded thereon a securing nut 24 which connects the guide rod with the standard. Upon the upper arm 14 of the tool carriage is fulcrumed a rocking lever 25 which has its forward end engaged with a lug 26 extending rearwardly from the guide rod 21 near its inturned upper end, the lever 25 being fulcrumed upon the said arm 14 between the standard 11 and an upturned car 27 on the said arm which ear prevents the displacement of the lever away from the standard when it is being operated.
Pivoted to the blocks 5 below the anvil is a foot treadle 28 to which is connected a pull chain 29 the same being connected through the medium of a link rod 30 with a short chain 31 carried by the rocking lever 25 so that upon depressing the foot t-readle 28 the carriage will be shifted on the standard 11 against the tension of the spring 13 causing the tool 18 to move toward and contact with the die part 20 for acting upon work presented upon the die part.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a support, of a rod mounted on the support, a tool holding device reciprocally mounted upon the rod, an arm extending laterally from said. rod, a spring surrounding said rod between the tool holding device and said arm, a second rod passed through suitable apertures in the tool holding device and secured by its lower end to said arm, the upper end of said second rod being provided with a lateral ex tension which is secured to the upper end of the first mentioned rod, said second rod forming a guide to hold the tool holding device against rotation, a pin extending from said second rod adjacent to its upper end, a lever bearing upon the upper face of the tool holding device and fulcrumed against said pin, and means for actuating said lever to depress said tool holding device.
2. The combination with a support, of a rod mounted upon the support and extending vertically upward therefrom, said rod being provided near its lower end with a laterally extending arm, a U-shaped mem- 3 ber reciprocally mounted on such arm, the bight portion of said member being provided with tool engaging means, a second rod extending through suitable apertures formed in the arms of said U-shaped member and secured by its lower end to said arm, a spring surrounding the first mentioned rod between the U-shaped member and the arm, a lug extending upwardly from the upper face of said U-shaped member and spaced apart from the first mentioned rod, a pin extending laterally from the second mentioned rod adjacent its upper end, a curved lever bearing against the upper face of said U- shaped member and between the first mentioned rod and said lug, one end of said lever being fulcrumed against said pin, and means for actuating said lever to depress said U- shaped member.
