MANUFACTURE OF CASEID METAL PINS FOR ARTIFICIAL TEETH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
Application filed December 4, 1908. Serial N 0. 466,026.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT ARTHUR ED- WARDS, joint manager of The Dental Manufacturing Company Limited, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 6-10 Lexington street, in the city and county of London, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Cased Metal Pins for Artificial Teeth, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of cased dental pins.
The pins of my invention are cut from a wire formed of a tube or casing of platinum with an internal filling of a base metal, such as nickel. I
Short tubes of platinum have been embedded in the tooth during molding, and after firing, pins of other metal have been soldered or otherwise secured in these short tubes. The pins thus formed have not been found satisfactory in practice owing to the fact that there will always be a sufiicient space left between the toot-h and its backing to allow a certain amount of acid to pass from the mouth around the pin which is not cased with platinum beyond the tooth and consequently said pin soon rots and breaks.
According to my invention I make a platinum cased wire from which cased pins are cut and headed, the fusible core of said wire being secured to the outer platinum casing by means of a solder which will unite with both metals without deteriorating the quality of the platinum coating and without increasing the fusibility of the core. In this manner I provide platinum cased pins, the heads of which can be embedded in the teeth during the molding; the teeth are then baked and the platinum cased pins absolutely secured to the teeth with which they are used. As the fusible cores of said pins are soldered to their platinum casing there is no chance of said cores dropping out while the pins are incased with platinum throughout their length and are therefore acid proof.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 shows a base metal Wire partly inserted in a platinum tube, Fig. 2 shows a sectional View of a cased headed pin, and Fig. 3 shows a sectional view illustrating the pin in position. 7
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates the base metal wire, 2 indicates the platinum tube and 3 indicates the head of the cased pin. As illustrated by way of example in Fig. 3 an artificial tooth, such as 4, is attached to a plate, such as 5, by means of the headed pin 6.
What I claim is:
A method of making an acid proof pin for artificial teeth, which consists in applying to the surface of a base metal wire, a coating of powdered solder which consists substantially of 65 parts of gold, 10 parts of silver and 25 parts of platinum, insert-ing said wire and solder intoa platinum tube, applying a sufficient degree of heat to fuse the solder and cause the wire and tube to be solidly united therewith, cutting the product obtained into suitable lengths and forming a head on each length.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERBERT ARTHUR EDWARDS.
Witnesses:
