Description

' J. K. TOLES. COMBINED SPOOL AND CUTTER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 8, 1910. I
" Patented F e10.27,1912.
imawso cutter is conveniently arranged in a novel COMBINED SPOOL- AND OIlT'IER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUs'rIN KAY Tones, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda, tate of California, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Spool and Cutter; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined spool and cutter, and it may be said to consist in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of the parts as will appear from the description and claims hereinafter.
. One object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified in which the manner and adapted to act effectively to sever a strip of adhesive plaster, tape, or
- the like, unwound from a coil.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a construction for the device whereby the cutter is movable toward the axis of the" spool to be in close proximity to the outer layer of adhesive plaster, tape, or the like, in the coil..
Still another object of the invention is to provide a construction for the device where-- by the cutter is movable around the axis of the spool.
A further object of'the invention is to rovide a construction for the device wherey the coil of adhesive plaster, tape, or the like, is movable around the axis of the spool.
A further object of the invention is to provide a slittin blade movable transversel of the cutting blade.
A fhrther. object of the invention is to provide a construction for the device whereby the cutter is movable around and toward the axis of the spool as the adhesive plaster, tape, or the like, is unwound from the coil on the spool.
Further ob'ects of the invention are to provide a device of the class specified which is strong, simple in construction and economical to manufacture, effective in use, and possessed. of features which make it practical and marketable, and'in which the cutter is adapted to leave the end portion of the strip or tape loosened from the coil, to permit of readily grasping the same.
Other objects and the advantages of the lowing forms of construction in which it maybe embodled, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,

2 is a perspective view of a portion of the device; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the cutter mounted on the ide; Fig. 4 is a perspectlvevlew of a strip of adhesive plaster, tape,
or the like, wound on "a hollow cylindrical part; Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2, the cutter and guide be ing omitted; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the cutter combined with a wooden core or spool on which adhesive insuiatingtape is wound; Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the slitting blade mounted on the cutter, the latter being indicated by dotted lines;
Fig. :8 is a perspective view ofa'modified construction, showing a portion of the spool and the cutter pivotally mounted thereon; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a modified construction, showing a portion of the side plate of the spool and a cutter mounted to move radially of the axis of the spool; Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a modified construction, showing the cuttermounted on the side plate of the spool to move radially of the axis of the spool.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, the
strip 2 of adhesive plaster or the like may be wound to form' a coil 3 on-the sleeve 4. The hollow cylindrical part 5 may be formed with an annular head 6 near one end thereof and with a portion thereof, near its other end, crimped or pressed together to provide the collar 7'. A slotted guide 8 may be passed over the end of the part 5 and disposed to engage the outer side of the collar 7, and the preferably annular side plate 9 may'then be placed adjacent to the guide 8 on the part 5, whereupon the end portion 10 of the part may be burred over in a well known manner. to hold the side plate v oneend the guided-is a cutter 13 which preferably consists ofa blade 14 providedat one endthereof with a cutting edge 15 vated at a sufficient distance layer, of the coil 3 topermit of cutting the u v unwound. {portion of the strip of adhesive I with a 'elearly. in
of substantially the width of the adhesive plaster or tape, and atthe otherend thereoL fip gerpiece 16. n As shown more a 1g. 3, the cutter 13 is preferably" arranged to have. the cutting edge .15 elerom the outer plaster or tape so as to leave the end 'por-.
' tion 17 of the strip or tape loosened il'ironi strip or tape.
the coil and turned up .so that; it maybe the fingers, when it is readily grasped b c another-portion; of the desired to unwin which prefer bly has its longitudinal cutting edge 23 bn the underside thereof and is disposed on the underside of the cutter 13- I and providedwith a part 24 thereon which is formed and adapted to be fittedover the finger piece 16 on the cutter to permit of the slitting-blade bein moved transversely of the cutter to the'desired position for cut- L Y ting longitudinally of the strip-of adhesive plaste rr the like.
As shown in Fig, 8," the cutter 13 maybe carried by arms 25 which may eachbe pivotallyv mounted on the side plates of the spool by means of a rivet 26 attachedto the sideplate near the peripher thereof.-
Fig. 9 illustrates amodi ed construction in which the cutter 13 may be mounted on the side plates of the spool to move radially place on the side plate by means oflu s 30 of the axis of .the spool; the cutter being rovided with side extensions 27 which may e fitted in radial slits 28 in the side plates.
Fig. 10 illustratesanother modified construction in which the cutter-I29 is mounted on the outer face of one ofthe side plates and is adapted to move radially'ofthe axis of the spool. As shown, the cutter 29 may be guided in its movement'and be held in.
. which may be pressed out portions 0 the side plate bent to extend over the cutter at the sides thereon The cutter 29 maybe manipulated atv will by means of the ele vated portion 31 to have the cutting; edge :32 extended: either above or below the edge of the side plate, the portion 31 being adapted to coact with the lugs 30 to limit the extent of movement of the cutter.
While diverse iorms I): which the invent-ion may be embodied have and the right is thereforereserved to all constructimf ili been illustrated and described, there are many changes and-modifications thereofthat w ill readily occur to those skilled in the art,
such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of-the in-;
vention. 1
