NAVIGABLE ROCK-CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED LOBNITZ, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Crookston, Renfrewshire, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Navigable Rock-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to navigable rock cutters, that is to say, to vessels adapted to steam from place to place as required and which carry a rock breaking or cutting apparatus of the well known Lobnitz type. Under this invention the steam vessel is made with a well at the bow and another well amidships so that the rock cutter (or cutters) can be operated either from the midship position or the bow position, a single structure being used for carrying the rock cutter in either position. The struc- 2O ture consists of a tripod arrangement of sheer legs, the central leg of the tripod being articulated at its upper end to the other two legs which latter can be moved from the one position to the other position pref- 2 erably upon the central leg as a pivot. All three legs are secured at their lower ends to bracket shoes suitably arranged on the deck.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood I have hereunto appended explanatory sheets of drawings, whereon Figure 1 shows a navigable vessel propelled by a steam power. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof, and Fig. 3 a cross section on the line XX.
As will be seen from the drawings the vessel A is made with a central well I) and a well 0 in the bow. The central well is shown as provided with an ordinary cutter guide (Z through the hole in the center of 49 which the heavy metal rock cutter 6 works this cutter being raised and dropped by means of the wire rope f and winch g.
The structure B consists of three legs 71., z, j, the two legs 7L, 2', being rigidly bound together at the top and carrying the guide pulley 70 for the wire rope. The central leg 7' is jointed at its upper end to the legs h, 2', by means of a strong pivot bolt Z. The three legs at their lower ends are secured to bracket shoes m, a, m by bolts. As will be seen in plan at Fig. 2 there are five shoes,
one m in the center, two a, n amidships and two 0, 0 at the bow and the sheer legs h, 5, can be secured either to the shoes 02, a or to the shoes 0, 0 the third leg always remaining pivotally secured to the central Specification of Letters Patent.

The legs, when secured in either the bow position as shown in dotted lines at Fig. l, or the midship position as shown in full lines at Fig. 1, can be bound together by girders 79. A platform 9 is carried by the legs h, 2'. When it is necessary to work at the bow of the boat the front well is provided with a cutter guide 7* similar to that shown at (Z, this guide being held in position by means of a cross girder t which also serves to bind the two parts of the bow together. l/Vhen the legs 71., i, are to be shifted from the shoes a, 01. to the shoes 0, 0 the bracing girders are removed.
The navigable vessel is built so as to work in a heavy sea.
In order that the operation of the rock cutter can be controlled from the bridge the lever u of the winch clutch is connected by a chain '0 (or rods) to a hand lever w on the bridge so that by operating said hand lever the winch drum can be clutched to its shaft or released as desired. The clutch lever a can be retracted by a spring 00.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A navigable rock cutter comprising, in combination, a vessel having a well at the bow and a well amidships, a rock cutter, a structure located between said wells and having a pivotal member upon which it can Patented Feb. 27, 1912.

2. A navigable rock cutter comprising, in combination, a vessel having a well at the bow and a well amidships, a rock cutter, a tripod structure located between said wells and having a pivotal member upon which it can be moved from the one well to the other in order to carry the cutter either at the bow or amidships and means for operating the cutter.
3. A navigable rock cutter comprising, in combination, a vessel having a well at the bow and a well amidships, a rock cutter, means for operating the cutter, a movable tripod structure comprising two side members and an intermediate third member jointed at its upper end thereto and also jointed to the deck of the vessel, the side members being adapted to swing on the intermediate member into position either at the bow or amidships.

A navigable rock cutter comprising, in combination, a vessel having a well at the bow and a well amidships, a rock cutter, a movable tripod structure comprising two side members and an intermediate third member jointed at its upper end thereto, a set of shoes for securing the side members amidships, a second set of shoes for securing the side members at the bow and an inter mediate shoe to which the third member is pivoted the structure being adapted to carry the cutter either at the bow or amidships, and means for operating the cutter.
5. A navigable rock cutter comprising, in
combination a vessel having a well at the bow and a well amidships, a rock cutter, a pair of sheer legs having means for carrying the cutter, means on the deck and adjacent to the well at the bow for the attachment to the deck of the said sheer legs, means on the deck and adjacent to the Well amidships for the attachment to the deck of the said sheer legs, and a third leg pivotally secured to the deck between the wells for supporting the pair of legs either at the bow or amidships.
