To ad whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED G. F. Kun OWSKI, a citizen of the United States, resld ing in borough of Brooklyn, cityof New York, in the county of'Kings'and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful'lmprovements in Type-Writing Machinesfof which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanisms of typewriting machines which regulate the width of the side margin on a sheet by ringing a bell and locking the keys when the carriage reaches a predetermined point.
One object is to improve and simplify these devices whereby a strong andunyielding lock is provided, the mechanism being readily applicable to existing machines, without necessitating careful or accurate adjustment, and easily accessible for repairs,,if necessary.
The usual pendent arm operated by the carriage of an Underwood riting machine, is, according to the present improvements, connected by a link to a rock shaft on which is a finger or cam. Said finger thrusts a stop into the path of the universal barwhich is operated at each type stroke, thereby blocking the type bars and keys. By turning a button, the link is cast off to release the type keys.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1- is a perspective of the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view from front to rear of an Underwood machine, showing the type bars locked. Fig. 3 is a detail of the stop seated in the frame. Fi 4 is a detail side View of the mechanism when idle. Fig. 5 shows the mechanism released by the button after having locked the type bars. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the operating tappets and cam.
Depressing any of a series of keys 1 on key levers 2, rocks an angle lever 2* to swing one of the type bars 3 to cause types 4 on said bars to strike a platen 5 mounted in a carriage 6. The carriage travels on front and rear rails 7, 8 of a framework 9, and is driven in the usual manner by a spring, (not on the work sheet is controlled by the engagement of a cam ortappet- 12 on the rarriage with a bell-ringing and line-locking cam 13 on a slide 15, the latter adjustable the tappet 12 strikes cam 13. As the fore going mechanism is about the same as is disclosed in United States Patent to \Vagner, No. 559,345, further illustration and description is omitted- The swinging arm 19 is connected by a rearwardly extending link 20 to a crank 22 on a rock shaft 23 journ'aled in the frame 9. The joint of the link and arm is marked 21. The contact of the tappet 12 with the cam 13 forces the latter downwardly, the rack 18 yielding under the weight of the carriage, and the arm 19 swinging forwardly. The arm 19 draws the link 20 forwardly to rock the shaft 23 and cause a finger or cam-29 thereon to interpose a dog or stop- 30 in the path of the universal bar frame 10, to lock the escapement and thereby block the type bars and keys.
The swinging arm 19 is connected to the link 20 by a pin 34, which is normally seated in a recess 35 in the link. A button 36 on a rock shaft 36, having a lifter 37 may iift the forward end of the link 20, to disengage the pin 31 from the seat and bring a slot 39 in the link, (communicating with the seat 35,) in .line with the pin, whereupon the finger 29 drops to idle position and the link 20 moves rearwardly the dog 30 returning to idle position to permit the type bars to strike the platen. The dog 30 is guided in a socket 31 in the frame 9, and a shoulder 32 thereon, seating in a notch 33, supports the dog in normal idle position (Figs. 3 and A returning spring 41 is preferably employed for the dog.
