COMBINED WEDGE AND CLAMP FOR HOLDING LOGGERS FALLING-BOARDS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THouAs EDWARD GOING, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Chemainus, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Wedges and Clamps for Holding Loggers Falling- Boards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved wedge and clamp for holding loggers falling boards, and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved device which may be readily driven into a tree, and employed to support a loggers falling board in place, at a suitable height from the ground, and hence avoid the necessity of cutting notches in the trees, as is now in practice in order to support the falling board at the required elevation, above the swell in the butt of the tree.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a side elevation of a combined wedge and clamp constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in use for supporting a loggers falling board. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, the logging board being indicated in dotted lines, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 1.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a wedge 1, of suit-able size which is adapted to be driven into a tree ata suitable point above the swell of the butt. The sides of this wedge converge toward the point 2 of the wedge and an edge 3 is also formed at the lower side of the wedge. At a suitable distance from its outer end, and on its lowerside, the wedge is formed with a downwardly extending arm 4:, which forms a shoulder to-bear against the tree into which the wedge is driven, and to add to the efficiency of the wedge as a support for the falling board.

My improved combined wedge and clamp is especially adapted for use in falling or cutting down large trees, such as occur in the forests of western Canada, and the northwestern section of the United States, and which. have such large swells at their butt as to require to be cut at from five to ten feet above the ground. In order to enable the trees to be felled, the loggers have heretofore cut notches in the trees at the required points, to support a board on which the loggers stand, while felling the trees, and which board is called the falling board. My improved device renders it unnecessary to out such notches in the tree and requires only to be driven into the tree in order to be used to support the falling board.
I claim 1. A device of the class described comprising a wedge having a downwardly extending arm at its lower side near its outer end and further provided at its outer end with a supporting arm disposed between the upper and lower sides of and lying in a plane at right angles to that of the wedge.
2. A device of the class described comprising a wedge having a downwardly ex tending arm, at its lower side near its outer end, and further provided at its outer end with a supporting arm, the said supporting arm lying in a plane at right angles to that of the wedge.
