Description

I J.E.PRBY METALLIC STRUCTURE snon AS DOORS-AND THE LIKE. APPLIOATION FILED AUG. 3, 1910 Patented Feb.27 ,1912.
UNITED STATES PATENT oF icE.
JO E FREY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR To GRINDEN .IART METAL COMPANY, A
CORPORATION or NEW YORK.
METALLIC'STRUQTURE, SUCH AS noons- AND THE LIKE.
to, the "accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to metallic structures, such as doors, paneling, wainscoting, partitions, frames and windows, and the object thereof is the production of a sheet metal structure which can be economically} strong; g u
Further objects of the invention will be hereinafter referred to in the detailed description of the invention. For descriptive purposes, -I have illusmanu't'a' tiured and. which shall be light and trated and will describe a metallic door embodying my in venti0n, but it is to' be understood that, except as' specifically pointed out, the invention as to details is su'sceptible ofmodification without departing from the spirit of the invention,- and that it is equally applicable to structures other than doors.
Figure l of the drawings is an elevation of a door embodying the nvention; Fig. 2
is 'a vertical section on a larger scale on the line 2--2 (Fig. 1); Fig. 3 is a sectional assembly view of the'parts shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 Fig. 1) Fig. 5 is an assembly view thereof and Fig. .6 is a sectional view of a modified construction,
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts in all the views.
The structure illustrated comprises stiles 1 and 2 and top, bottom and lock rails 3, L and 5 which I have herein referred to as l'rame members. \Vithin the frame mem: bersare mounted panels 7 and 8. The frame members in the structure illustrated arc lori'ned with oppositely placed walls 10 and I], and are provided with interlocking slots'and flanges or tongues, the slots being formed on either the end membersor rails or on the side members or stiles. The slots are formed by bending the interior margins or edges o the member back so as to leave Specification of Letters Patent.

an open slot 12-, and then bending or reeurving the metal to form another substantially parallel slot vl4. The flanges or tongues 15 are formed on the edges of the walls of the other members and enter and lit tightly 6 the slots 14; they are preferably offset so that thefaces of the members will be in thesame plane. In the structure illustrated the slots are formed on the stiles and the flanges are formed on the rails. i A stay member 17 is provided, which in the structure 1 shown is formed with upturned flanges 19 which enter'and-fit tightly the slots 12, thus rigidly supporting the walls of the structure.
,Thepa'nel members 7 and 8 of the-structureare provided with flanges 20, which *enter. and fit tightly therslots 14. The
flanges 20 may be formed integrally with the panels, or theymay beformed 'o'n moldi'ng strips 21, which'are-properly connected with the panels, as for-instance in themanner shown in Fig. 6. In this view the space between the pane'lsis filled with some nonconducting material, such as asbestos .or 3
mineral wool 22.
When properly assembled the' different members are permanentlv. secured together,
preferably by electric welding.
I claim 1 -v l. A; metallic structure of the characterdescribed," having interconnected members, one of said members being formed with two substan ially parallel'slots, another of said,
members being provided with a flange which cxtends jinto one of said slots, and a stay member iprovided with a flange which ex te nds into-the other of said slots.
2. A metallic structure of the character described, comprising members havingbppositely disposed walls bentadjacent to their edges to form [two substantially parallel slots, members each connected with said slotted members by means of a flange projecting into one of said slots, and a stay member between the walls of the slotted members provided with flanges which enter the otherslots.
3. A metallic structure of the character described, comprising a frame having side and end members with oppositely disposedwalls having their interior edges bent to" form two substantially parallel slots, stay members between the walls of the frame members having flanges projecting into the 2 slots in the frame members, and a panelstiffening members having interlocking fianges.
5. In a'metal door, metal stiles and metal rails forming sheet metal boxes, one of said boxes being open at one edge, and a strip coveringthis otherwise open edge, one of saidboxes being formed with two pairs of slots, the other box having flanges entering one pair of the slots and the strip having flanges to enter the other pair of slots.
6. A metallic structure of the character described, having interconnected members, oneof saidmembers being formed with, two
pairs of slots, another of said members be ing provided with flanges. each of which extends into one of said slots, anda stay memher provided with flanges which extend into the others of said slots.
7. In a metal door, metal stilesland metal rails forming sheet metal boxes, one of said boxes-being open at one edge, and a strip covering this otherwise open edge, one of said boxes having its edges bent to form two pairs ofslots, the other box having" flanges entering one pair of the slots and the strip I having flanges to enter the other pair of
