Description

I inited Staten @wat @imita GEORGE W. JOHNSON,
OF DANVILLE, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES P. HAWKIN S, OE ASAME PLACE.
.team Patent No. .101,883, daad apra 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-BAGS.
-The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making paxt of the same To all whom it may conce/rn struction or manner of making tobacco-bags, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in theart to which myinvention appertains to make and use the same, I- will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tobaccobag turned wrong side out;
Figure 2 is a side view; and
Figure 3, a bottom 'view of the same.
I takea piece of musiin, or suitable material, of a suitable size, and bend it over double. I then sew a seam, beginning at the lefthand bottom corner, and after sewing across the bottom pucker it, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3, and then tack the lower right-hand corner, and continue the seam with the same thread up the side of the bag to the top.
The top ormouth is then bent over all around, and a thread or string sewed loosely around the part thus bent over, vleaving the ends of thestring protrude, so that WhenA they are drawn the top of the bag is also puckered, as shown iu fig. 2. y
The bottom forms a at surface, as shown in fig. 3, and when the bag is closed bothI top `and bottom appear alike, as shown in iig. 2..
I am fully aware that bags of almost any descrip-` tion have been drawn together by strings at the mouth and form a pueker. Hence, I disclaim such to be my invention.
What I claim, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the within-described tobacco-hag formed of a single piece of muslin folded over and seamed by a. single thread.- down the sides and bottom, with the bottom puckered, and the top puckered by a string sewed around it loosely, all as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of February, 1870.
G. W. JOHNSON.
