Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 19 12.
Application filed March L1, 1911. Serial No. 613,911.
T 0- all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hi0 P. EiLnRs, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boole Page-Recording Devices, of which the fol- The invention relates to recording devices for recording the number of the page at which reader ceases reading a book and to which page he wished to at once open to resume his reading in subsequently taking up the book again for reading.
The objects of the invention will be set forth hereinafter in part, and will in part be obvious to those skilled in the art.
The invention consists in the novel parts, construmiions,- arrangements, combinations and hnprovements, herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein, and forming" a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the same serving;- in connection with the description herein to explain the principles of the inven tion.
Of the drawingsz l igure 1 is an elevation of a book provided with the page rccording device; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section on the line A E of Fig. 1, and upon an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective View showing the lining sheet side of the book cover of 1; and Fig.
at is a ClGW corresponding to Fig. 3 showing a somewhat different arrangement of parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings and to the embodiment of the invention therewith illustrated, 1 represents the side cover of book, and 2 the back of the book. The side of the cover may be consruded in any suit-able manner, but shown herein of a construction which is quite usual in what are ordinarily termed cloth bound and leathenbound.books of ordinary literature. That is, the side cover consists of several members or parts, usually a piece of binders board having on the outside thereof the exterior leather or cloth cover folded over the binders board at the edges, and pasted or otherwise attached to side cover is usually pasted or otherwise attached on the inside of the side cover and over the folded over edges of the leather or cloth, thus making the work complete and slightly. In Fig. 2 the .sheet of binders board is indicated by 3, and the external cloth or leather by 4 folded over and attached to the inside of the sheet 3 of binders board at The lining sheet is indicated by the reference numeral 6. Located between two of said cover members are a plurality of movable members, each hearing a series of numerals, one of the cover members being apertured to permit simultaneous observation of one numeral on. each of said movable members, so that they may be read together to indicate the number of the page which the reader of the book wishes to record. The movable members are shown as three disks 7, 8 and 9, rotatably fixed to the sheet 3 of binders board, and also, if desired, .to the outside cover 4:. The disks are shown attached by eyelts 10, each eyelet serving as an axis about which the disk rotates. Each disk is provided with the numerals or digits in a circular series uponits side, and the disks are shown one overlapping the other to economize space.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the numerals are arranged to be observed from the exterior of the book and in Fig. 4 they are arranged to be observed from the interior. In Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the side of the book is accordingly apertured through the external cover- .ing 4 and through the .binders board 5, so as to expose a numeral on each of the disks. Three apertures 11, 12 and 13 are shown formed by eyelets or rings set into the cover with the flanges thereof turned over the parts l and 5, and each aperture being, in register with the circle of numerals on the corresponding disks 7, 8 or 9; each aperture being of a size to expose one numeral only.
The edges of the disks 7, 8 and 9 project very slightly beyond the edge of'the cover so that each of the disks may be turned bv the finger of the reader and yet isun likely to be disturbed accidentally by any other means. The lining sheet 6 covers the disk except for a small space where they project to be actuated by the readers finger, as will be clear from Fig. 2.
In 4 the page recording device is shown readable from the inside of the cover only and, if desired, may be constructed and arranged so that no evidences of it are discernible from the exterior of the book. In such an arrangement the eyelet 10 may extend 0nly through the binders board 3, the exterior cover; member 4 being continuous past it. The apertures 11, 12 and 13 in such case are formed in the lining sheet 6 and, of course, the numerals are on the opposite face of the disk from the arrangement shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. In Figs. 3 and t the body of the-book is indicated by 14 and the other cover by 15. In Figs. 1, 2 and 4 the exposed or visible numerals on the disks are indicated by 16.
lV'th the device of the present invention,
the turning down of pages, the Withdrawing and re-inserting of a movable and project ing book mark, or the effort of endeavoring to charge the memory with a pa e number, are obviated. As the reader ceases reading,
he has merely to touch the edges of the disks to indicatethe page and when he wishes to resume reading a glance at the recorder instantly gives him his page number.
It will be understood that changes from the exact structure shown herein may be made within the scope of the accompanying claims, without departing from the principles of the invention.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. The combination with a book cover =com risin a luralit of cover members attached together face to face, of a page indicator comprising a plurality of independently movable members movably mounted between two of said cover members, each of said movable members having a plurality of numerals thereon, and being accessible from the exterior of the cover so as to be moved as required, said cover being apertured to expose one numeral on'each of said movable members to permit simultaneous observation thereof, whereby they may be read as one number.
Q.'The combination with a book cover comprising a plurality of cover members attached together face to face, of a page indicator comprising a plurality of rotatable disks located between two of said cover members, each of said disks having a plurality of numerals thereon, and each disk overlapping another. of said disks, and being also accessible from the exterior of the cover so as to be moved as required, said cover being apertured to expose one numeral on each of said movable disks to permit simultaneous read, as one number.
v3. The combination with a book cover con' prising a plurality of cover members,
, one ofsaid members being a lining sheet attached to the other of said cover members, of a page indicator comprising a plurality of independently movable members located" between said lining sheet'and the other cover member, each of said movable members carrying a plurality of numerals thereon, one of said cover members being apertured to expose. and thus permit simultaneous ob serration of, one numeral on each of said movable members, whereby said opposed numcrals may be read as one number.
a The combination with" a book cover comprising a plurality of'cover members, one of said members being a lining sheet; attached to the other of said cover members, of a page-indicator comprising a plurality of independently movable members located between and movably mounted upon one of said cover members, each of said movable members having a. plurality of numerals thereon, one of said cover members being apertured to expose and thus permit simultaneous observation of one numeral on each of said movablemembers, whereby said exposed numerals may be read as one number.
5. The combination with a book cover comprisinga plurality of cover members, one of said members being a lining sheet attached to the other of said cover members, of a page indicator comprising a plurality of rotatable members located between said cover members, and mounted upon one of said cover members, each ofsaid rotatable members having a plurality of numerals thereon, one of said cover members being apertured to expose, and thus permit simultaneous observation of, one numeral on each of said rotatable members, whereby said exposed numerals may be read as one number.
6. The combination with a book cover comprising a plurality of cover members, one of said cover members being a lining sheet attached to the other of said cover members, of a page indicator comprising a plurality of rotatable numeral bearing disks located between said cover members and to tatably mounted upon one of said cover members, the edge of each disk projecting beyond the edge of the cover, one of said cover members being apertured to expose and thus permit simultaneous reading of one numeral on each of said disks, whereby said exposed numerals may be read as oneof the cover, a plurality of orifices formed in "one of said cover members, each orifice being of a size to expose a single numeral disk is exposed and may be simultaneously and being arranged in a row in line with said dlsks, whereby one numeral'on each observed to be read as one number.
8. The combination with a book cover comprising a plurality of cover members attached together face to face, of a page indicator comprising a plurality of independently movable men'lbers movably mounted between two of Said cover members and overlapping one another, each of said IIIOV", able members having 'a plurality of nunier al s thereon, and being accessible from the exterior of the cover so as to be moved as required, said cover having a plurality of.
apertures, each being of a size to expose one numeral on each of said movable members to permit simultaneous observationthereoir', whereby the apertures are brought relatively close together and the numerals on the respective members may be read as one number.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
