To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Aivnmis Boniis, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at Barcelona, Spain, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an adjustable mattress which can be placed in any ordinary bedstead and is particularly adapted for invalicls.

The head and foot members of the device can be adjusted to take the shape of a Morris or easy chair so that a person reclining on the mattress can be readily moved into a sitting position.

This invention is an improvement on the device shown in Patent #983,118 granted to me January 31st, 1911.

The present invention relates essentially to the method of adjusting the head section of the device and the peculiar way of looking said section in any suitable position.

It consists of a sector carried by the head section and provided with a double set of teeth combined with a pair of pawls to cooperate with the sector teeth and lock the head section in any position. The pawls can be operated by a pair of slides one being mounted on each side of the frame and these slides are connected together so that either of the slides can be manipulated to actuate the pawls.

The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which;

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the parts in a difierent position. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the parts in their normal positions. Fig.4 is a detail view of a sector showing the pawls locked. Fig. 5 isa similar view showing one of the pawls unlocked. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken along the line 00 00 Fig. 4.

In this drawing the letter a designates a frame which forms the longitudinal portion of the mattress seat. On this frame is mounted a lever b having its fulcrum at c and provided with a sector all having inner teeth 6 and face teeth Two pawls g and k are adapted to engage the inner and outer teeth of the sector. These pawls have weighted end portions so that they will normally gravitate to engage the teeth of the sector. The said pawls are operated by means of pins -21 fixed to a slide rod 7' mounted on one side of the frame. At the other side of the frame is also mounted a slide rod 70 having pins m fixed to the rod and of suitable construction to engage a bailnpivoted at 0 to each side of the frame. This bail also engages pins m fixed to the rod j and thus forms a connection between the slides and allows either of the slides to be manipulated to operate the pawls. The lower end of the lever b is hinged at p to the jointed links 9 and one end of these links is pivoted to a foot lever 7 which is fulcrumed at s to the side of the frame. A lever 25 is pivoted to the jointed ends of the link Q and it swings from the fulcrum point .9. A wire mattress M has one end fixed to the head lever b and the other end fixed to the foot lever r and on this mattress may be placed a cushion or a hair mattress as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the device may tion either of the slides is manipulated and the pawls assume the positions shown in Fig. 4. It will be readily understood that when the head section is to be lowered the pawl 72. is moved out of engagement with the teeth of the sector and the other pawl then clicks over the teeth.

It should be said that the device may be equipped with arm rests a: hinged to the lever 12 and a folding table to may be pivoted to the frame. As shown in Fig. 1 the lower end of the mattress may be raised in a horizontal position by means of a foot board 5 which is connected to a bracket 6 fastened to the side of the frame.

I claim:

1. A device of the kind described, comprising a frame, head and foot sections pivoted to the frame, a sector carried by the head section and having a double set of teeth, pawls mounted on the frames and ooacting with the sector teeth to hold the head section in adjusted position, and devices located on each side of the frame for operating the pawls to engage the teeth of the sector and lock the head section in any de sired position.

2. A device of the kind described, comprising a frame, head and foot sections pivoted to the frame and provided with a flexi- 10 ble fabric, a sector carried by the head section and having a double set of teeth, pawls mounted on the frame and coacting with the sector teeth to hold the head section in adjusted position, and slides for operating the pawls to engage the teeth of the sector and lock the head section in any desired p0- sition.
