Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS AUGUSTUS ASPINWALL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Liquid-Sprayers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device employed for spraying liquid upon growing plants or vines in rows, such plants and vines as potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries, cotton and the like, and this device is adapted to be moved about from place to place for this purpose.
This invention is an improvement upon the devices shown and described in Letters Patent granted to me August 7, 1906, #828,175, and August 27, 1907, #864,501.
The device of my present invention relates particularly to the pump structure and to the means for actuating the same, with the object of supplying a high-pressure pump controllable and adjustable for varying pressures of say 50 to 100 lbs. according to the consistency of the liquid employed, the numher and size of the nozzles and the consequent distance away and size of the object to be sprayed, and the further object of maintaining the pressure uniform according to the conditions present and the results sought.
In carrying out my invention and in combination with the usual devices employed heretofore by me and shown and described in said patents for supplying the pump with liquid and supplying the liquid to the nozzles, and also with the air'chamber, I employ a pump that is double-ended; the pis tons thereof being so connected as to act to force the liquid with an adjustable pressure according as the device or features of my improvement may be predetermined and set; it being preferable to impart to one of said pistons an accelerated movement over the other.
The features of my improvement are actuated from the crank and crank shaft of the gear connected to the main axle and devices connected therewith and extending there from coupled to the opposite ends of the two pistons and employed in connection with toggle-bars and adjustable spring actuated devices which may be set to an index plate according to the pressure desired, which predetermined setting will impart more or less movement to the toggle-bars so that with a greater movement the pressure is increased and with a less movement the pressure is diminished, all of which is hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial section of a liquid sprayer device showing generally the features of my present invention associated with the features of my former patents with which the same are to be employed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the majority of said parts, that is to say, the wheels of the sprayer and the liquid barrel and the particular spraying devices are omitted, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation and vertical section at the dotted line 00, m, Fig. 2 in larger size.
The features which are substantially cOmmon to the structure of my present invention and my former patents as herein cited, comprise a main axle 2, vehicle wheels 3, a large gear 4, on the main axle and a small gear 5 on an auxiliary or crank shaft 9.
6 7 8 and 9 represent frame members carried by the main axle 2 and upon which are supported the liquid spraying mechanism.
10 represents the draft members by which the vehicle is pulled, and 14, 15 are supports therefor from the frame members.
11 are the spraying devices, and 12 and 13 are adjustable supports for the spraying devices said members 12 and 13 being supported by the aforesaid members 14 and 15.
16 represents the liquid holding barrel and 17 the swinging paddle within the same, and 18 a pipe for delivering the liquid from the barrel to the pump or air-chamber 19.
The special features of my present invention comprise the pump cylinders a a and an intermediate chamber a into which the liquid is drawn and from which it is forced into the air-chamber to be delivered to the spraying devices. The particular structure through which the liquid passes. however, forms no part of my present invention. This pump structure is preferably of the form described and shown in an application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed by me on June 3, 1909, Serial #499,968, namely, with a double cylinder, or in other words, two alined open-ended cylinders and two pistons and their piston rods. The pump cylinders are supported upon a platform or girder 6 being bolted thereto at the feet-2O of the pump cylinder and at the end of this platform or girder b I provide brackets 79 b in which the respective ends 0 c of the pistons of the pump cylinder slide and are guided.
(Z (Z are bars secured by bolts to the piston ends 0 0 and these bars at similar ends are connected by rocker arms 21 to bracket members secured to the frame member 8. The bar (Z is at its opposite end connected by a pivot 22 to a bracket 6 and frame 6. The bar (Z is connected at its complementary end by a rocker arm 21 to a bracket 6 Therefore when the bar 6 and its brackets e e are given a back and forth movement the piston ends 0 0 and pistons are reciprocated with the movement, the extent of which is governed and controlled by the relation of the bars (Z (P, the rocker arms 21 and the frame e and its brackets e 6 The rocker arms 21, in their operative relation to the other parts, produce a lost motion effect which permits the piston end 0 to lag behind and shorten its stroke relative to the stroke of the piston end 0. The lost motion effect of the rocker arms 21 is varied by the adjustment of the toggle bars k More or less movement may be imparted to the members just described and consequently more or less pressure through the air-chamber may be created in proportion to the length of the stroke of the pump and consequent amount of liquid passed into the air-chamber.
I employ a casting which includes an arm f connected by a pivot 23 with the bracket 6 an index plate f and side bars F. The index plate f is a rising portion of the frame; it is provided as shown in Fig. 3, with a toothed edge of five teeth, from each one of which extends a line and indicating numerals or letters; for instance the letters S. N. meaning small nozzles and L. N. large nozzles. The numerals to the left of these letters indicate the number of nozzles and the numerals to the right the pressure. Consequently in reading this index plate, one reads at small nozzles 50 lbs.; 4: large nozzles 80 lbs; 8 small nozzles 50 lbs. and 8 large nozzles 80 lbs.

This slide bar 2' is received in a suitable groove-way in the sidebars f of the casting which forms the arm f, index plate f and side bars f and on the opposite end of the slide bar 2' is a shoulder i adapted in the extreme movement to come closely adjacent to one end of the side bars f in said casting and prevent the slide bar i coming out of the groove-way.
k 713 are toggle bars pivotally connected together and at their respective ends the bar 70 is provided to the arm f and the bar 70 pivoted to the yoke head 7211. A rocker-arm Z is pivoted to a vertical bar at as shown in Fig. 3, and said rocker-arm at one end carries a roller Z adapted to bear upon the upper surface of the toggle-bar 7c and a spring n is connected at its lower end to the end of the rocker-arm Z opposite to the end to which the roller Z is connected. The bar m is made with an A-shaped head m and in the top of this head there is an opening to receive a bolt 11 having an adjustable clamping nut and to which the upper end of the spring at is connected. The lower free end of this A-head m comes adjacent to the index plate f and is intended by its adjustable position and relation to the teeth of the index plate, to indicate the number and size of the nozzles and pressure; the same being predeterminedly set according to the result to be obtained.
The lower end of the vertical bar at is provided with holes 24 in series; the holes in each series agreeing in number with the number of teeth or projections on the index plate 7, and I employ bolts 25 which secure the vertical bar at in a predetermined adjustable relation to the side bar f of said casting. This adjustment is very easily and quickly effected so as to change the relation of the bar m to the side bar f so as to raise or lower the same and in so doing adjust the position of the free end of the A-shaped head m to the marks on the index plate, for it must be apparent that the lower down the vertical bar m is placed in its relation to the side-bar 7, the lower will be the free end of the A-head m in its relation to the index plate f to indicate the pressure, and consequently the greater will be the tension applied by the spring a to the rocker-arm Z and its roller Z against the toggle-bars. This pressure means an increased movement to the pump pistons and an increased flow of liquid and consequently greater pressure upon the vertical bar m with relation to the side-bars f and a higher mark of the indexplate means a release of the tension of the spring a and consequently increased movement to the toggle-bars and consequently decreased movement to the pump pistons and a less flow of liquid and less pressure.
In the operation of the device, the revolution of the main axle 2 by the vehicle wheels as the liquid sprayer is drawn over the ground turns the gear 4. and therefrom the gear 5, the crank-shaft g and the crank g and the rotary motion imparted thus to the crank and its crank pin swings all the parts connected to the crank pin upon the pivot pin 23 of the casting to the bracket 0 imparting therefore to the casting, or in other words, to the arm 1', index plate f and side bars the yoke 72., the yoke-head k segment 72;, the toggle-bars h the vertical bar m, its A-shaped head m the rocker-arm Z and its roller Z an up and down swinging motion and to the slide bar a, side bars the yoke h, yoke-head 7L segment [b and toggle-bars Zr: 70 also a reciprocating motion, simultaneously, and the straightening action of the toggle-bars 7c Zc through the power of the spring a exerted upon the rocker-arm Z and roller Z effects through the parts hereinbefore described by their connection through the arm f and pivot 23 with the bars cZ (Z frame 6, brackets e e and link 21 a reciprocating action of the pump pistons by the connection of said parts to the piston ends 0 c effecting the drawing of the spraying liquid from the barrel 16 through the pump cylinders, the air-chamber and to the spraying devices, and in this motion the stroke for both pumps may be alike or the stroke may be varied. The adjustment of the parts by changing the position of the part m varies and determines the tension of the spring a and this determines and results in a variation of the throw or stroke of the pistons so that the pump piston nearest to the main axle may receive less pressure and movement than the one at the rear. The motion imparted to the piston is through the crank g and connection it, to which is attached the sliding bar 2' with stop shoulder i at the opposite end, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3. The sliding bar is inclosed in the casting f by plate f Fig. 2. The casting 7L forming the connection with the crank is connected with casting f by means of togglebars 70 and 70 which through the sliding motion of the bar 2', causes them to toggle toward the roller Z on the bar Z attached to the frame m. The pressure against the toggle bars is maintained through the spring a, regulated by the thumb-nut a hen the pressure is applied in a direction to straighten the bars, the sliding bar Z moves in a direction against the stop Z when the liquid by suction is drawn into cylinder a,
at which time the liquid in cylinder a is being forced out (requiring the greatest pressure) the bar 1' being kept from sliding by said stop i On the reverse motion the liquid in cylinder a receives the pressure and the cylinder a the suction, which yields to the sliding of the bar 2' causing the toggle bars to move upward against the roller Z receiving a pressure as required through ad justment of the nut 11). A further adjustment is obtained through setting the frame m up or down by means of the series of holes 2 1 and bolts 25, which are also in the casting By this adjustment the various points on the index plate are reached, thus affording latitude of movement by the toggle to meetthe desired pressure according to the size and number of nozzles used. The whole connection with frame at as shown is movable with the crank and connected by wrist pin 23 to the connections moving the pistons of both pumps, as shown in the specifications.
Suitable valves are of course employed in this device in connection with the pump so as to control the direction of the liquid supply and in this connection I have shown apipe 0 (see Fig. 2) by which the liquid instead of being forced through the spraying devices may be returned to the pumps when it is necessary to turn the liquid spraying apparatus around the end of one row in a field to start in another row, as this is preferable to disconnecting parts of the gear where the spraying function is not required.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a liquid spraying device, the combination with devices for supplying the power, of an air chamber and pump cylinders and pistons, series of devices connecting the pump pistons capable of variable extent of movement, devices connecting the said series of devices with the power, and manually actuated means adapted for a predetermined adjustable relation to the series of devices connecting the pump pistons so as to control the pressure in the air chamber employed to force the liquid through the sprayers.
2. In a liquid spraying device, the combination with a crank-shaft, and crank, of an air-chamber, a pump having two oppositely disposed cylinders and pistons, devices connected to and connecting the pistons and for simultaneously operating the same, a cast frame pivotally connected to said devices, a member having a slidable relation in connection therewith and secured to the crank-pin of the said crank for a reciprocating and swinging movement, and means connected to the said frame and memher and having an adjustable relation, whereby the pressure upon the liquid to be forced to the Sprayers may be controlled as desired.
3. In a liquid spraying device, the combination with a crank shaft and crank, of an air-chamber, a pump having two oppositely disposed cylinders and pistons, devices connected to and connecting the pistons for simultaneously operating the same, a cast frame pivotally connected to said devices, a member having a slidable relation in connection therewith and secured to the crank-pin of the said crank for a reciprocating and swinging movement, an index device formed as a part of said frame, a vertically movable member connected in an adjustable relation to said frame and as set simultaneously indicating a position in regard to said index device and means connected to said frame, the slidable member and the vertically movable member adapted for tension in regard to the adjusted and set position of the vertically movable member so as to automatically control the stroke of the pistons and the consequent pressure upon the liquid to be forced to the sprayers.
4. In a liquid spraying device, the combination with a crank shaft and crank, of an air-chamber, a pump having two oppositely disposed cylinders and pistons, devices connected to and connecting the pistons for simultaneously operating the same, a casting comprising an arm pivotally mounted to said devices, an index plate and side bars; amember consisting of ayoke and yoke head connected to the crankarm, a slide bar secured thereto and received in slide-ways in said casting and adapted with a turning of the crank to move through said slide-ways with a reciprocating action and to swing the said casting on its pivot with the aforesaid devices, toggle-bars connected at their re spective ends to the arm of said casting and to the yoke-head, a vertically movable member connected in an adjustable relation to said casting and having an end adapted to occupy a predetermined position with reference to the index plate and means connected to said vertically movable and adjustable member acting upon the toggle-bars for applying irregular pressure thereto to straighten the same in proportion to the position occupied by said vertically adjustable member.
5. In a liquid spraying device, the combination with means for applying power and motion, of an air chamber a pump having oppositely disposed cylinders and pistons, bars connected to the ends of the pistons outside the cylinders in a parallel relation, links connecting the ends of said bars to members of the frame atone end, a frame connected in a pivotal relation with one of said bars, and a rocker-arm connecting the opposite end of said frame with the other of said bars and means connected with said frame and interposed between the same and the power devices for imparting movement thereto.
