SAMUEL MCILVANIE, OF EBURNE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
PENGIL-S-HARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Application filed January 31, 1911. Serial No. 605,841.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MoILvANm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eburne, Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and Improved Pencil-Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in that type or class of Sharpeners which consists of some form of blade adapted to cut or shave the wood of a pencil to form the required tapering point. p
The details of form and construction of the sharpener are as hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is an edge view of the sharpener showing its position relative to a pencil when in practical use; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sharpener; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view further illustrating the practical use of the device with the several views.
A indicates the rectangular cover or blade proper and B the curved shank or handle, both of which are constructed integrally from a flat piece of steel. The end of the blade is beveled on the upper side only, to form the required cutting edge, and the shank B is curved consecutively with the blade so that both are concave on the upper s1 e.
In operating the device, the pencil to be sharpened may be placed and held flat on a desk by the left hand, while the sharpener is grasped between the thumb and forefinger of the right hand, the thumb being uppermost and pressed upon the concaved side of the shank. The sharpener is then operated by forcing the beveled edge against the wood and in the direction of the point to be formed. A thin shaving is thus pressed and taken ofif the wood part at each movement of the device, the pencil being intermittently rotated and the operation continued until the required thin point is procluced.
WVhat I claim is An improved pencil sharpener, comprising a flat blade whose end is beveled on the upper side, and an extended shank formed integrally with the blade and extended longitudinally therewith, the blade and shank being concave on the upper side as shown and described.
SAMUEL MoILVANIE.
