UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
1,018,155. \VEB-llilt FORATINH MIX'YIIANIHM. .faurzs linsoouoll, Niagara Falls, N. Y., assignor to lhe Carter- (.rume (.70., Limited, hiagara l alls, N. Y., a Corporation. Filed Oct. 5, 1908. Serial No. 450,158.
To all whom it may concern. lie it known that. James llcsoouon, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new amt useful improvements in \Vt'lt-l Perforating Mechanism, of which the ftll-i lowing is a full, clear, and exact descriptiom} such as will enable others skilled in the artl to which it 'appertains to make. and use the: same.
This invention relates broadly to print-- ing mechanism, and more particularly ti mechanism adapted to perforate traveling wehs.
()ne of the objects of the invention is to provide mechanism of the ahove character which will be effective in operation and in 'which the liability of tearing the webs will he reduced to a minimiun.
Other objects will he in part obvious and in part. pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, comhinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will he exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein illustrated one of the various possible em-t hodiments of my invention, Figure 1 is a? view illustrating diagrammatically a portionv of a printing press. showing my improved. perforating mechanism: and Fig. 2 is a to plan view of portions of the cylinders whic I carry the perforating members. 1
Similar reference characters refer to simi-i tar parts throughout the two views.
ltcferring now to the drawings. 1 indi-g catcs the female portion of the ierforatiugi mechanism and comprises a cy inder prod. vidcd with annular peripheral grooves 2 which lie side hr side throughout its entire length, as cleary shown in Fig. .2. 'lhis' cvhndcr is suitably driven hy gearing ou the outside of the frame of the machine. Cooperating with cylinder 1 is a plurality of similar cylinders shown at 3, 4, 5 amt 6, each of which, in the present. instance, is provided with segments 7 and 8, Fig. .2. ()ne of these segments is securely fixed to the shaft 9, and the other is allowed to swing free thereon so that it may be adjusted to any desired position thereon and secured in position, as by means of setscrews, one of which is shown at 10.
I The perforator blade 11-01 male portion of the perforate! is held between two plates,-
f tttl tttslttldc segment l2 and l t. ne of which is provided with ,d wel pins which receive the blade. suitahle .holes heing provided in the hladc to receive said pins. slot is provided in the segments, into which )ltlttH 1B alul lit, constiiluting the ttliltlt' holder, are titted, said holder hcing held in position by any de- .sircd means, in the present instances as hy means of the taper pins.
in order to secure lateral iu'ljtlstmentfor the perforalor hlade. the hearings in which the cylinders 2', -t :1 and (3 run are fitted with adjusting screws H at lioth ends of their shafts. 'lhc cylinders which carry the perforating memhers are provuled at the ends of their shafts with suitahly driven gear wheels, not shown, which may he held in dare hy means of set screws, so that said cylinders can he readily adjusted to anv desired position.
it the operation of the mechanism, the weh. which is shown alto. is fed to the perforating means. as ll means of a pair of c 'lindcrs l0 amt l7, whereupon the perf rator blades of the several cylinders are. carried into engagement therewith. It will laccordingly he seen that I have provided :jmechanism well adapted to attain, among lothers, the several ends nml ohjects set forth Qin a simple. yet ellicientv manner. Since the iperforatmg members work in longitudinally extending grooves all danger of breakage is entirely eliminated.
As many changes could he nmde in the. ,nbove. construction and many apparently widely different. embodiments of this invention could he made. without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the ahove description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall he interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to he understood that. the language used in the following claims is in tended to cover all of the generic and speitic features of the invention herein detilicd, and all statements of the scope of ;the invention. which, as a matter of language. might he said to fall thcrchetween.
llaving descrihed my invention, what i 'claim as new "and desire. to secure. hy Letltl.- l'atcut is:
1. in printing mechanism. in comhination. a cylinder provided with a plurality of annular grooves, a second cylinder arranged adjacent thereto, a segment carried hy said second cylinder, and a member pro vided with a plurality-of perforating points carried hy said segment, said perforating points being adapted to enter said grooves during the rotation of said cylinders.
. Q. in printing mechanism, in combination, a cylinder provided with a plurality flat annular grooves, a second cylinder arlts' JI -I ll t't' m a cin-umlercntiallr t'al'tlcd hy said Q /X' was" cylinder, a member vurried by said sepment| Z1 mul prm'ide'l \vHh n plurnlh v 0| pvrfm'nl- P ing points ndnpled toenler HRH grnm'emlllring the rotation of said cylinders, 11ml meuns fm effecting a relative hmgitudiunl ndjustmont between said cylinders.
In testimony whereof I nflix my signn turn, in the presence nf two witnesses.
