To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL JoHAN wEs- OsoAR ASMUSSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of No. 46 The Drive, Ilford, Essex county, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Rotary Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to rotary printin machines and has for its object an improve rotary printing machine which can be utilized either for the double sided printing of a strip or sheet or for the single sided printing of two strips or sheets.
Rotary printing machines are known for first and second printing, in which the paper to be printed is fed to the cylinders in an endless strip or in separate sheets. In both cases their printing devices consisting of printing and plate cylinders and coloring:
arrangements are always connected together positively in such a manner that the printing in the colors provided can be effected on both sides. Hitherto however, it has. not been possible to utilize both the printing apparatus totally independent of each other, each as a rotary printing machine for oneside printing in the given colors. The pres- 1 ing apparatus-connected positively to each otherl Figs. 2 and 4 are similar views, in which, however, the two printing apparatus are in the posit-ion of independent operation. Fig. 5 is a plan view showing indetail the manner of changing the arrangement of the printing apparatus shown in Fig. 1 to that of Fig.2. F ig. 6 illustrates in detail the manner of changing the arrangement of the printing apparatus shown in Fig. 3 to'that of Fig. 4.
The machines shown in the drawings are adapted for single color printing on both sides, that is have two single-color printing apparatus.

The improvements according to the invention can be effected in various ways. One type isshown in Figs. 1 and 2; The frames are not cast in one piece, nor, if consisting of several parts, rigidly joined together, but each printing apparatus has its own frame parts and these are jointed to a common base frame in such a manner that one apparatus can be brought into or out of contact with the other. Fig. 1 shows the first instance, Fig. 2 thelast. In the other type shown in Figs. 3 and A, two intermediate cylinders .2 and a, are arranged between the impression cylinders 03, and d,. If both the printing apparatus connected together are to be used for printing on both sides then these cylinders must not only be in contact with their corresponding impression cylinders,-but also with each other, as shown in Fig. 3. The paper printed in the first printing apparatus is then fed with the aid of the intermediate cylinders 2 and 2 to the second printing apparatus and printed on the "other side therein. If the connection of the cylinders 2 and z, is disconnected, as Fig. 4 shows,
then each of the two'printing apparatus canbe operated without the slightest effect on each other.
Another feature of the invention is that each of the printing apparatus forsingle side printing is equipped with a feeding device for strips r and 1' or for sheets I), and 6 a delivering apparatus .a, and a and lastly a driving device m and m,,. Fig. 5 illustrates the manner in which one of the printing apparatus shown in Fig. 1 may be adjusted on the base plate so as to be moved into or out of connection with the other apparatus of the set.
The auxiliary base plates 9, to which both the side frames 6 of the machine halves to be moved are screwed, and the common base plate '0 have each an eye I and n respectively. In the former a threaded spindle k is journaled so as to be capable'of rotation only, while the eye n contains the nut or female thread for the spindle is. The threaded spindle is can be turned in both directions by means of bevel wheels 2' and a countershaft rotatably journaled in the frame 9 having a crank 71., and one printmoved away from the other.
Fig. 6, illustrates the manner in which the moving of the intermediate cylinders 2 and 2 may be effected to bring the two printing apparatus of Figs. 3 and 4 into or out of connection with each other. The axles of the cylinders 2 and z, are both as shown in the case of the cylinders 2 journaledin eccentric boxes 0 the flanges 7' (see Fig. 6) of which are formed as spur gear wheels meshing with spur pinions u mounted on a spindle .9. On turning this spindle by boxes 0 are rotated simultaneously on both sides and the cylinders 2 and .2 thus brought either into the position in Fig. 3 or that in Fig. 4. At 9 a locking device is arranged for the boxes 0 to secure these in the adjusted position. 1
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
. 1. In a rotary printing machine, the combination of two complete printing apparatus, each comprising an impression cylinfeed, delivery and driving devices, with sheet reversing and transferring means between said two printing apparatus, and means for connecting and disconnecting said apparatus, whereby sheets or a web will be passed successively through said apparatus paratus are connected together, or will be aoiaiai passed through the apparatus independently and be printed upon one side only when the apparatus are disconnected from each other.
2. In a rotary printing machine, the combination of two complete printing presses, each comprising an impression cylinder, a plate cylinder, inking rollers, and feed, delivery and driving devices, each of said printing presses being adapted to operate independently to cause them to print at the same time each upon one side of sheets or a web, with means for connecting the impression cylinders of said presses to cause them to print successively upon opposite sides of sheets or a web. 3. In a rotary printing machine the combination of two complete printing apparatus comprising each an impression cylinder, a plate cylinder, coloring rollers and feeddelivery and driving devices with two intermediate cylinders arranged between the two impression cylinders and means for connecting to each other the two impressioncylinders by adjustment of the two intermediate cylinders essentially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a rotary printing machine the combination of two complete printing apparatus comprising each an impression cylinder,
a plate cylinder, coloring rollers and feeddelivery and driving devices with intermediate cylinders arranged between the impression cylinders and journaled in eccentric boxes and means for adjusting the eccentric journal boxes of the intermediate cylinders essentially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a rotary printing machine the combination of two complete printing apparatus comprising each an impression cylinder, a plate cylinder, coloring rollers and feeddelivery and driving devices with intermediate cylinders journaled in eccentric boxes means for adjusting the said journal boxes and means for locking the journal boxes in the adjusted position essentially as and for the purpose described.
