SHANK-TR-IMMING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Application filed September 25, 1208. Serial No. 454,727.
State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Shank- Trimmi'ng Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to an improvement in shank trimmers.
Heretofore in the making of shoes it has sometimes been the practice to trim the edge of the sole from the seam outward, whereby the sole edge was made to appear thinner than the actual thickness of the sole.
The object of the present invention is to produce an .improved machine for perform-- ing this operation. 7
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly de-.
fined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of so much of the 'machine as is necessary to illustrate the construction of the operative parts, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side, Fig. .3 is a sectional elevation taken on the plane of the knife shaft, Fig. 4 is a front elevation, and Fig. .5 is a transverse sectional elevation. f
The illustrated embodiment of the invention is described as follows The two principal elements of the machine are the knife K and the guide G. The knife is mounted on the end of a rotary shaft 10 supported in a bearing 11 in the frame of the machine, and it is actuated by any suitable means. Provision (not shown) is niade for holding the knife shaft from longitudinal movement.
The knife consists of a series of blades of substantially frusto-conical. form, the edges of which blades are adapted to engage the material presented to them. The knife is driven at a high speed of rotation and cuts accurately and rapidly 'the material presented thereto.
The guide G consists of a member having a guiding edge 12 adapted to engage the bottom of the channel of the sole of a shoe, whether of the welt type as shown in the drawings, or ofthe McKay type. The edge of'the guide is adapted to run along on the outseam or in the groove in which the stitches of the outseam lie, and to hold the channel flap open, thereby preventing the channel flap from getting in the path of the a guide bar 13 provided on its under side wit a rack which is engaged by a pinion 14 formed on the guide adjusting shaft 15 supported in a bearing in the sleeve 16, which in turn is secured to the bearing 11 just-ing shaft 15 the guide is moved outor in as desired to bring it to the proper posi- -tion with. relation to theknife. The guide is held in adjusted position by means of the spring washer 18, which is supported on thestem 19 of the guide adjusting shaft 15, and held in place by the nut 20. A handle 21 in the guide adjusting shaft 15 affords means. for rotating the shaft to move the guide in or out. For the convenience of the operator in bringing the guide to the correct position, the guide adjusting shaft 15 is provided with a ointer 22, which by pointing to the different figures of the gradguide. Thus the operative having a certain class of work to do may bring the guide to the adjustment which he knows by experience is the adjustment best adapted for the particular kind of work which he has to do. The knife is provided with a guard 24 pra'ctically semi-cy-lindrical in form, and projecting forward from the sleeve 16 over the knife. This guard is intended to safeguard the. operative from accidental contact with the" knife.
In operation, the shoe is presented to the machine so that the guide engages the bottom of. the outsole channel and rides along at the base of the channel or on or near the seam. The guide is capable of being adjusted to move the work farther out or closer to the knife, as the style of cut determined upon requires. The operative then slides the shoe along the guide, observing the .depth to which the knife is trimming. The operative may trim a portion off of the edge of the. sole which gradually widens and then gradually tapers down again at the other end of the shank. and he determines the amount trimmed off 'by tipping the shoe more or less during the operation. Thus the machine lends itself cutter. The guide is formed on the end of by a set screw 17. By turning the guide aduations 23, indicates the position of the I to the trimmingof shoes widely. differing from each other in shape, and by the simple expedient of tipping the shoe more or less during the time it is being presented to the knife. It is apparent that by tipping the shoe from the position shown in Fig. 3, a
. much larger portion of the edge of the sole could be removed, so that the sole would h.;.ve the appearance of being very much thinner than the actual-thickness, or on the other hand the sole could be trimmed as little as desired.
' In its broader aspects the invention is not limited to the use of a rotary knife, nor 'to the details of construction above described, as the invention is susceptible of embodiment in other and different forms. It is preferred, however, to use a rotary knife, because it cuts with certainty and rapidity.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A shank trimming machine having, in
combination, a work-guide having a portion adapted to engage the bottom of the outsole channel, and a trimming knife having its cutting portion adapted to trim off a portion of the edge of the sole, said guide constituting the only work guiding instrumentality and permitting movement of the shoe with relation to the guide and knife so that more or less material may be trimmed off of the sole edge, substantially as described.
2.. A shank trimming machine having, in
combination, a work-guide having a portion adapted to engage the bottom of the out; sole channel, and a rotary trimming knife having its cutting portion adapted to trim off a portion of the edge of the sole,
said guide constituting the only Work guiding instrumcntality and permitting movement of the shoe with relation to the guide and knife so that more or less material may be trimmed off of the sole edge, substantially as described.
3. A shank trimming machine having, in combination, a work-guide having a portion adapted to engage the bottom of the outsole channel, a trimming knife having its cutting portion adapted to trim off a portion of the edge of the sole, said guide constituting the only work guiding instrumentality and permitting movement of the shoe with relation to the guide and knife so that ,more or less material may be trimmed off of the sole edge, and means for adpisting the stituting the only work guiding instrumentality and permitting movement of the shoe with relation to the guide and knife so'that more or less material may be trimmed off of the sole edge, and means for adjusting the relative position of the guide and knife, substantially asdescribcd.
