Description

A. H. MARTIN. TAPE FEEDING MECHANISM FOR RECORDING INSTRUMENTS. APPLICATION TILED APR. 24, 1911.
1,01 7,984. Patented Feb, 20, 1912.
awoewtoz CLJCKIVO/f a Wy MM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUBRY H. MARTIN, OF SHORT HILLS, NEW JERSEY, ASSI GNOR TO RECORDING SPEED- OMETER COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
Tarn-FEEDI G mncnanism non RECORDING INSTRUMENTS.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, AUBRY H. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Short Hills, in' the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Tape-Feeding Mechanism for Recording Instruments, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanydrawings.
My invention relates to recording instruments, in which it is desired to move past a recording device, a predetermined amount of tape during a certain period of time, or
during the operation of some mechanical de-,
vice, as the revolution of a wheel of a vehicle, and its object is to provide a mechanism for feeding the tape of such instruments which will withstand the vibration and jars to which such instruments are usually subjected, which may be readily adjusted as to the amount oftape to be fed, and which is economical of construction. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, in which similar characters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the various views.
I illustrate and describe my device as adapted to the instrument shownin Letters Patent No. 949,000, granted February 15, 1910, to George S. Maxwell, without limiting myself to such adaptation,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, 2 is a plan thereof, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modification.
1 is the supply case in which the tape 3 is stored in any convenient manner; 4 is a ide-t-able over which tape 3 passes as it eaves case 1. The take-up roll 2 is mounted on swinging arm 8 at the opposite end of tablegg Upon clockwork mechanism is mountedifdisk 5, said clockwork being adapted to revolve said disk 5 once every hour. Upon swinging arm 9 is mounted the roller or idler 10, of much smaller diameter than' disk 5. The swinging arms 8 and 9 are so arranged with reference to disk 5 that spring 7 may maintain roll 2, roller 10 and .disk 5 in operative relation with each other.
The arrows indicate the direction of operation. The peripheries of disk 5' and idler 10 are provided with teeth or milled or roughened surfaces, so that the will gri each other and the tape on rol 2. Pre erably, I use a knurl in preparing these Specification of Letters Patent.

peripheries. By changing the diameter of disk 5, it will be understood that the amount of tape to pass a given point on table 4 during one revolution, may be varied.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the idler 10 is omitted. The disk operates directly on the tape 13 on roll 12 which is -mounted on arm 18, and maintained in operative relation with disk 15 by sprin 17. As roll 12 is revolved it pulls tape 13 rom case 11 over table 14. By changing the diameter of disk 15 the amount of tape to be fed may be adjusted. a
What I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A speed recorder for recording the movements of a member driven automatically from a vehicle, including a device for feeding tape in predetermined amounts past said member and a clockwork for operating the tape-feeding device, said tape-feeding device consisting of a storage device for the tape, a roll adapted as it revolves to wind the tape thereon, a disk having a circumference equal to the predetermined amount of tape to be fed, and provided on its periphery with a surface adapted to grip the.
tape, said roll, disk and tape being arranged so that said disk is in contact with said tape only at the point where the peripheries of said roll and said disk are urged together, said disk being driven from the clockwork, and means for maintaining said. roll in operative relation to said disk.
2. A speed recorder for recording the. movements of a member driven automatically from a vehicle, including a device for feeding tape in predetermined amounts past said member, and a clock-work for operating the tape-feeding device, said tape-feeding device consisting of a storage device for the tape, a roll adapted as it revolves to wind the tape thereon, a disk substantially midway of the width of the tape and having a circumference equal to the redetermined amount of tape to be fed, an provided on its periphery with a surface adapted to grip the tape, said roll, disk and tape, being arran ed so that said disk is in contact with sai tape only atthe point where the peripheries of said roll and said disk are urged together, said disk being driven from the clockwork, and means for maintaining said roll in operative relation to said disk; substantially as described.
Correction in Letters Patent Ne. 1,017,984
smaller diameter than said disk mounted between the roll and said' disk, said disk and said idle roller being provided on their peripheries with surfaces adapted to grip each [SEAL] I other, and the tape,
thereon, a disk substantially mid-- tape being arranged so that said idle roller is in contact With said tape only at the point Where the peripheries of said roll and said idle roller are urged together, said disk being driven from the clock-Work, and means for maintaining said disk, said roll and said idle roller in operative relation with each other; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, this 20th day of April, 1911.
AUBRY H. MARTIN.
In presence of- H. V. N. PHILIP, JOHN M. JUDGE.
It is hereby certified that the name of the patentee in Letters Patent N 0. 1,017,984, granted February 20, 1912, for an improvement in Tape-Feeding Mechanism for Recording Instruments, was erroneously written and printed Aubry H. Martin, Whereas said name should have been written and printed Aubrey H. Martin; and
that the said Letters Patent should be read With this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofice,
Signed and sealed this 2nd day of April, A. 1D,, 1912.
