FLEXIBLE FIRE-RESISTING SHUTTER.
Svpeoica'tivon of Letters lvatent. i
Application filed March 4, 1908. Serial No. 419,150.
To` all whom 'ifmcy concern: n Be it known that I, ALBERT RUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, lhave invented a certain new and,
useful Improvement in Flexible Fire-Resisting Shutters, ofy which the .following is a specification. I
The object of this invention is to provide an Vim roved {iexible shutter or curtain that shall e of lighty construction, neat a pearance, and that shall be adapted to resist fire or retard radiat-ion of heat.
The invention is embodied in the construction hereinafter described and claimed, the invention not being confined to the precise details of construction herein set forth g and shown in the accompanying drawings for part hereof.
In said drawings-Figure 1 illustrates a sectional'isometric perspective of fractions of the two slats and the device for hinging or connecting the slats together;'I1`ig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view illustrating how the slats ook in the hinging member when the shutter or curtain is, for example, rolled up on a roller.
The slats proper are preferably formed or molded out of plastic material, for example, of paper or Wood pulp,.or a mixture of materials that is {ire-resistant or heat-retardant, or can be made so by coating or by admixture therewith of suitable materials. In form the slats proper are shown in cross section and longitudinally to have a straight body portion 3 with hooks or rolls, as seen at 3 and 3, on their opposite longitudinal edges, said rolls or hooks being formed on the arcs of circles internally and externally to which the faces of the slat are respectively tangent. These hooks are shown to be located on or to project from the same side of the slat.
In some cases, to impart strength to the slat and maintain its integrity when subjected to extreme heat, the slat can have embedded in it when molded a core of Wire fabric as seen at 4. Said fabric can extend into the hooks. It is even practicable to :manufacture the slats fof'glass with the wire screen embedded in them, such glass being known in the arts as wire glass and as constituting a good fire-resisting medium. '.When the slats are of Wire glass a good lireresistant shutter vor curtain for a Window or hdoor is afforded without excluding the li t. n
gThe device for connecting the slats, designated as a whole by the character 5, is preferably made of a narrow strip of sheetmetal having its longitudinal halves bent to form two longitudinal pockets or seats 5a and 5b, one for each of a pair of the hooks 3 andv 3b. The pockets 5a and 5b of the connecting device are shown to be adapted to the form of hooks 3 and 3b, or so that said hooks rockingly fit in said-pockets, the strip being depressed, as seen at 5, along its middle to secure conformity to the exterior` sides of the hooks.
From an inspection of Fig. 2 it Will'be observed that the slats can be flexed or rocked with reference to each other in the connect-- ing device/ for permitting the shutter or curtain to be rolled upon a roller or to pass around a curved guiding channel. It Will also be noted that the connecting device cooperates with the hooks to prevent undesirable movement of the slats edgewise together or asunder. In the construction shown also the arc of the hook and pocket is such that the slat cannot be turned out of the pocket, hence the connecting device is applied by sliding it longitudinally on the hooks, or as maybe desired, b sliding the hook of a slat into the pocket o the connecting device. l
-The inner side of the curtain or shutter, that is, the side not containing the connecting devices, presents a smooth, chaste appearance.
l/Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A flexible shutter or curtain including in combination main slats of plastic material having at their longitudinal edges rolls or hooks formed in cross section on the arcs of circles, said rolls or hooks in the'l slats Patented Feb. zo, 1912.l
