'Be it known that I, EDGAR H. MUMroRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadel hia, in the county of Philadelphia an State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvelments in Jolt-Ramming Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relatlon in general to sand molding, and in particular to apparatus for jolt ramming the4 sand in sand ming the sand molds by means of a blow.

It has for its primary objects the provision of an improved apparatus of' jolt ramming sand molds, wherein the impact or jolt is developed by arresting the movement of suflicient mass to lift the mold bodily; and the provision of-an improved apparatus for jolt ramming sand molds in which the impact or joltis delivered by a` moving element which gives but a single shock during its cycle of movement, and
wherein there is no appreciable jarring im parted to the floors supporting the mold apparatus and the jolting apparatus. These together with such other Aobjects as may herelnafter appear, I attain by means of a device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein The figure is a partial section and end elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention.
In general my method consists in ramdeveloped by arrestingthe movementof a -mass which is projected against the mold apparatus. It is preferable .to develop the blow from a direction below upward, the moving mass striking a superimposed mold apparatus, and, when put in motion, havin suiiicient inertia to move a substantial 'distance upward carrying the mold apparatus along lwith it. The return of the mass and the mold apparatus is cushioned so that there is no jar subsequent to the initial olt or blow.
'In carrying out my method I provide an operating ram or plunger-7 mounted for reciprocation in the upper end of a U shaped als4 chamber or cylinder 8 and having a head 9 which is adapted to strike a superimposed platformu or table 10, on which the mold 11 is placed. The cylinder. 8 is partially filled with a liquid 12, preferably Water, and has an inlet 13 for `the admission of fluid pressure controlled by ysuitable valve mechanism.` A baiile plate 14 is pro'- vided adjacent the inlet to secure a uniform distribution of the fluid pressure at initial admission, and to retain Vthe water in the cylinder on release of pressure. A packing 15 of the usual character is provided at the upper end of the cylinder to prevent the escape of the water and air, and a support*- ing stool 16 is provided within the 'cylmder to form a seatfor the ram when the device is idle. The operation of -tlie device is as follows :-On admission of pressure through the inlet 13, the Water is depressed in that portion of the chamberor cylinder 8 adjacent the inlet and raised in the. opposing portion, thereby projecting the ram 7 upward, the head 9 of the ram striking against the platform 10. The ram and its -head are otgreat weight and their inertia isproportionately great, so that the blow developed by the impact -on the platform and mold apparatus 1s severe. The inertia carries the ram together with the platform and the mold a 4paratus a substantial distance upward t e object being toprevent repeated and irregular jars. On the downward movement the ram is cushioned. by the air in the cylinder, the amount of which, together with the proper exhaust and admission thereof, is' controlled b valve 4mechanism (not shown) preferab y operated by the movement ofthe ramet proper intervals. This cushioning permits the ram and with it the mold apparatus to return comparatively slowly, thereby eliminating shocks subsequent to the 'initial jolt `which would undo its work. 4 As an additional means for securing a gentle return ofthe mold apparatus, the posts 18 of the supporting platform may be provided with collars 19 bearing against springs 20, which will absorb any shock'occasioned in the return. It is obvious that various other means may be equally well employed-in cushioning the return of the mold apparatus and the ram,
as for instance daslrmechanism in the cyl- On the downward movement of the cause, would be directed upwardly againstl the air cushion, thereby relieving the floor from strains and jars. Furthermore the air Ais prevented from going through the water Aand bearing directly against the ram 7, 'which would interfere with the successful operation of the device.
It is also to be noted that the shock produced by the ram striking against the platform is away from the floor, and the return of the ram and mold apparatus being cushioned as before s et forth, there .is little or no jar or vibration of the supporting floor.
By using `an interposed liquid between the rama'nd the aetuatinguid, the advantages ofbot-h liquid and fluid pressure are secured.
VOther advantages will readily present themselves to those familiar with the art.
Having thus described my invention and `villustrated its use, what I claim as new and i ratus,a mold support, means for imparting -a blow to the support from beneath and carrying the support upward with such means after the blow is struck, and then '-returningjthe support comparatively slowly to starting position whereby a revers-e jolt is avoided.
3. 6. In an apparatus for jolt ramming sand molds, the combination with a mold apparatus, of means for moving the mold apparatus upward with a jolt, and means for cushioning the return of said means.
7. In an apparatus for jolt ramming sand molds, the combination with a mold apparatus, of a ram for moving the mold apparatus upward with a jolt, pneumatic means for operating the ram, and a body of liquid interposed between the ram and the pneumatic means.
8. In an apparatus for jolt ramming sand molds, the combination with a mold apparatus, of a ram for moving the mold apparatus upward with a jolt, a cylinder therefor with its lower portion t-urned laterally and carrying a body of liquid, and means for supplying air pressure to t-he body of liquid to cause it to operate the ram.
9. In an apparatus for jolt ramming sand molds, the combination with a mold apparatus, of a ram for moving the mold apparatus upward with a jolt, a cylinder therefor with its lower portion formed with an upturned bend carrying a body of liquid, and means for' supplying air pressure to the surface of the liquid in the upt-urned bend.
