ATTACHMENT FOR. OIL WELLS.
APPLICATION FILED JUNEZO, 1910.

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NORMAN FRASER, 0F NOBWALK, OHIO.
ATTACHMENT F63 OIL-WELLS.
certain new and useful Improvements in 'Att-achments for Oil-\Vells, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for pumping oil and particularly to a device designed for the purpose of saving oil at .the top of a well, the said apparatus being designed to be used in connection with the cable of a pump.
An object of this invention is to produce a device capable of being applied to or installed with pumps which are already in operation or they may be used in connection with pumps which are being erected.
A further objectof this invention [S to produce a device comprising detachably connected parts which i built around a piston rod in conjunction with the casing head, whereby the cable 18 permitted to move therethrough and whereby oil is prevented from discharging around the cableor through the oil guarding means.-
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth' and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote correspondi11 parts in the several views, in whichigure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of the oil .well attachmentembodying the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a transverse sectional view; Fig.3 illustrates a perspective view of acap; Fig. 4 illustrates a detail view of the sections of the body; Fig. 5 illustrates a of packing;, and Fig. .6 illustrates a perspective V16W 0f the sections of a washer.
In these"drawi ngs 7. and 8 denote the sections of the body each-of which is provided wit- h ears 9, 9 and 10, 10 respectively apertured to receive the bolts or other fastemn 11 by'which they are bound together. Eac section has-a recessed inner wall, the recesses of the two walls coinciding to form an annular channel for thereceptionoi a washer 12 comprising two semi-circular sections, a

prising two semi-circular sections. At the bottom of each section 7 and 8, there is a shoulder 15 and 16' respectively which shoulders have recesses in their edges form ing a channel for the passage of the cable 17.
Exteriorly, the sections 7 and 8 are screw threaded near the top and a cap 18 is threaded on the said sections and is adapted to bear against the'washer 14: for the purpose of pressing itagainst the packing. By this means, the pressure on the packing may be increased or diminished in order to effect a tight joint and prevent the escape of oil between the cable and the packing. The cap is provided with a radial slot 19 which extends throughout the axial length of the cap and which terminates at a point beyond its axis; and the inner terminus thereof constitutcs an aperture through which the pis- The slot 19 provides a quick, easy and convenient channel throu h which the cap is applied to the body. l iy reason of the fact that all the partsof the attachment are made in sections, except the cap, the said device may be assembled around a cable and when they have been secured together in the usual way, the sections 7 and" 8 may be anchored to the casing head by means of spikes or the like (not shown) as any appropriate fastenings may be adopted for the purpose of anchoring the body.
Itis the purpose of the inventor to construct washers 12 and 14 'of hard steel in order that they will withstand the wear incident to the movement of the cable through them and as these washers are the only parts of the attachment which can wear away to an extent to impair the utility of the device, these washers are readily removable. By reason of the construction indicated,-therefore, the durability of the attachment is increased as compared with devices now .in general use and owing to the fact that these washers may be readily removed and replaced, the cost of maintenance is minimized.
I claim'.
1. A piston guide and packing comprising two semi-cylindrical sections each having an aperture therein and each having a shoulder. at the terminus of the-aperture and each' having an externally screw threaded end,
therethrough metal washers fitted into the apertures through which the piston extends, packing inalterial aroundthe isten and between the washers, and an -internally screw-threaded cap fitted onto the externalscrew threads of Tthe-semi-c lindrical members. said cap havtogether with said apertures adjacent to each other and having a; piston extending -therebetween packing material in the aperk in the presence tures around the piston, and a cap screw threaded onto the semi-cylindrical members,
said cap having :1 radial slot .extending throughout the axial length thereof and extending radially inward beyond the center and terminating in an aperture through which the piston extends. y
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature of two witnesses. NORMAN M. FRASER. WVitnesses:
