To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to improvements in pulleys, sheave wheels and the like, and the object of the invent-ion is to provide a wheel of this character with detachable rim sections, positioned between the flanges of the wheel, which are adapted to provide awearing surface therefor and which ,may be readily replaced when worn, thus obviating the necessity of throwing away the body of the sheave when the rim portion becomes worn, and also rendering the use of such sheaves materially less expensive.
IVith the above, and other objects in view which will be more apparent as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.y
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention and in which,

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates an ordinary sheave wheel or pulley. This wheel 1 has its periphery beveled in the usual manner and is provided with a central peripheral groove 2. The groove 2 is provided at spaced intervals with suitable openings 3 communicating with the inner face 4 of the wheel.
By reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing, it will be noted that the face 4 is of less width than the rim of the pulley, so as to provide a suitable oifset between this projecting face, for a purpose hereinafter to be set forth. The annular groove2of the pulleyl is adapted for the reception of a plurality of segmental rim members 5. These rim members 5 are constructed of a harder material than that of the main body of the wheel and the said rim sections have one of their edges provided with spaced lugs 6 while their opposite ends have their faces provided with spaced pockets 7 which are adapted for the reception of the lugs or projections 6 of the co-acting rim sections. The rim sections 5 are each provided with depending ear members 8 positioned upon the underv faces of the said members adjacent the offsets or projections 6. The ears 8 are adapted to project through the openings 3 of the wheel and are provided with elongated slots 9. adapted for the reception of suit-able wedgeshaped retaining members 10, one of which being illustrated in detail in Fig. 2 of the drawings. -It will -be noted by reference to this Fig. 2 that the said retaining element 10 has each of its end portions threaded as at 11, and these threaded portions are adapted for the reception of suitable nuts 12 which bear against the face of the wheel, so as to effectively retain the member 10 in position within the openings of the ears and at the same time secure the nuts tightly against the oifset faces of the wheel to prevent the lateral movement of the wedge members 10.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, that it is merely necessary, when the bearing rims 5 become worn, to easily and quickly remove the same and to replace the worn member with a new one. It will be also observed that the rim members 5 are provided with the ears 8 adjacent the lugs or projections 7, thus providing means for effectively retaining the said sections together, it being understood, of course, that the said lugs 6 engaging within the pockets 7, effectively retain this end of the rim tightly upon the inner wall of the recess 2.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A pulley comprising. a body portion having its rim formed with a central groove and having openings extending from the groove through to the inner face of the rim, a plurality of rim segments filling the groove, each of said segments having one of its ends provided with pockets the said pockets being arranged adjacent the opposite edges of the said segments, the opposite end of each of the segments being formed with reduced extending lugs, each of the The slots 9 are i lio said lugs being provided adjacent the opposite faces of the segments and arranged in a plane parallel therewith, the lugs of one of the segments adapted to engage within the pockets of the co-acting segments and each of the said segments being provided with a downwardly extending ear arranged directly to the rear of the end of the segment provided with the lugs, the said ears adapted to pass through the openings which communicate with the central groove, each of the said ears having an opening, a wedgeshaped retaining member having its opposite ends threaded and adapted to engage within the opening of each of the lugs, nuts for the threaded ends of the retaining elements, the said nuts adapted to contact with the opposite faces of the rim of the wheel substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
