To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES E. WINCHEL, a citizen of the United Statesof America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in.

Combined Desks and Registers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in combined desks and registers, and pertains more especially to a wall-desk and register adapted to be attached to a vertical wall in a kitchen, oflice, shop or corridor of a building, and comprising a holder for a roll of paper from which paper may be pulled to and over a table.

One object of this invention is to have the said holder and the table pivotally connected to a stationary plate arranged to swing in a vertical plane and having their axes coincident so that the table and the said holder can be swung simultaneously in one and the same direction and the tablecan be swung independently of the said holder.

Another object is to so relatively arrange the parts that the table projects upwardly or forwardly from the said plate according as the table is in its upwardly swung or downwardly swung position and the holder employed in supporting a roll of paper abuts against the aforesaid wall and braces the table from the wall at the under side of the table when the table and the said holder are in their downwardly swung position.

Another object is to have a roll of paper arranged under the rear end of the table in the downwardly swung position of the table and to permit pulling of paper from the said roll to and over the rear edge of the table and thence forwardly over the table, and to provide the table at the forward extremity thereof with a transverse cutting edge at which any paper extending forwardly of the table in the said position of the table may be severed from the paper lying on the table. 7

Another object isto provide means whereby the aforesaid holder and the table are detachably secured together so that the table and the said holder can not only be readily swung simultaneously, but to have the table by detaching it from the said holder in their downwardly swung position rendered free to be swung upwardly and rearwardly independent of the said holder to alford convenient access to the said holder.

Another object is to provide the aforesaid plate with a latch arranged to lock the table in its upwardly swung position so that the table may be held in the said position when the table has been swung upwardly and rearwardly independent of the aforesaid holder and so that the latter and the table are both held in their upwardly swung position when they have been both actuated into the said position.

lVith these objects in View, and to the end of rendering the construction simple and inexpensive, this invention consists in certain structural features, and combinations and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of a wall-desk and register embodying my invention and shows the desk and register attached to a wall which is shown in section. In this figure the table and the holder for supporting a roll of paper are shown in their downwardly swung position. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line 22, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. In dotted lines, Fig. 2, the table is shown swung upwardly independent of the aforesaid holder. Fig. 3 is a centralvertical section corresponding with Fig. 2, except that in Fig. 3 the said holder and the table are shown in their upwardly swung position. Fig. 4; is a vertical section on line 44-, Fig. 3, looking forwardly. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line 55, Fig. 2, looking forwardly. Fig. 6 is a section on line 66, Fig. 4, looking in the direction indicatedby the arrow. Fig. 6 is drawn on a larger scale than the other figures.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates a vertical wall to which my improved walldesk and register is adapted to be attached.

My improved wall-desk and register comprises a metal plate B which in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is shown suit-ably attached to the wall A. The plate B is therefore stationary. The plate B is provided at its lower end and forward side with two forwardly projecting lugs b and b which are spaced horizontally and transversely of the plate and afford bearing to a pivotal pin 0 which is arranged horizontally and transversely of the plate and extends between and through the said lugs and a suitable distance beyond the outer sides of the lugs.

E represents a table arranged at the forward side of the plate B and pivotally connected to the said plate by the pin C. Preferably the table E is provided with lugs 0 arranged at the outer sides of the lugs Z) of the said plate and journaled on the pin 0 so as to render the table capable of beingswung in a vertical plane toward and from the plate and consequently toward and from the wall A. In Fig. 1 and in solid lines Fig. 2 the table E is shown in its downwardly swung position in which the said table projects forwardly and somewhat downwardly from the plate 13. In dotted lines Fig. 2 the table E is shown in its upwardly swung position in which the table projects upwardly above the plate B and is substantially parallel with the wall A.

A receptacle or holder G for supporting a roll of paper H is provided. The holder G is provided with ears 9 which are arranged between the lugs b and b of the plate B and journaled on the pin C. The holder G is therefore pivotally connected to the plate A and arranged. to swing in a vertical plane.

By the construction hereinbefore described it will be observed that the axis of the table E and the axis of the holder G are coincident, that one and the same pin C is instrumental in pivotally connecting both the said holder and the table to the plate A, and that the table and the said holder can be swung simultaneously in one and the same direction. The relative arrangement of the parts is such that the holder G in the clownwardly swung position of the table E is arranged at the under side of the table, as shown in Fig. 2, and abuts against the wall A at its rear end and extends from under the rear portion to and below the forward portion of the table and at its forward end engages the under side of the table so as to brace the table from the said wall. The roll of paper H is supported from the holder G in any approved manner and preferably arranged under the rear end of the table in the downwardly swung position of the table. Paper may be pulled from the roll H to and over the rear edge of the table between the lugs e of the table and thence forwardly to and over the table, as at h,-

and beyond the forward end of the table, and the table is provided in its forward extremity with a cutting edge 10 which eX- tends transversely of the table and is instrumental in severing any paper projecting forwardly of the table from the paper lying on the table.

The table E constitutes a cover for the receptacle G when the table is in its downwardly swung position and the said receptacle is open at the under side of the table substantially from end to end of the receptacle to accommodate the passage of a roll of paper H into or from the receptacle at the top of the latter when the table has been swung upwardly and rearwardly independent of the receptacle. Also the receptacle extends from under the rear portion of the table to and under the forward portion of the table in the downwardly swung position of the table and braces the table under its forward portion from the wall or support A so that the table in its downwardly swung position is adequately braced or supported at its forward portion against any pressure downwardly upon the said forward portion of the table by a person who in using the table leans or bears downwardly upon the said forward portion of the table.

The table E is provided near its forward end with a slot 12 which is however spaced a suitable distance rearwardly from. the cutting edge 10 and extends transversely of the table, and the table is provided at the top of the said slot with a crossbar 13 which extends transversely of the table and from end to end of the said slot and is preferably formed integral with the table. The bar 13 is arranged centrally between and spaced from the side walls of the slot 12 to permit 9 paper pulled over the table from the roll H to pass under the said bar. The bar 13 is instrumental in holding any paper pulled under and across the under side of the bar downwardly on the table.

The table is provided at its under side and rearward of its slot 12 with a lug 14, which projects downwardly through a slot 15 formed in the forward portion of the holder G, and an endwise withdrawable pin K extends through the said lug at the outer side of the said holder and is instrumei'ital in de- I tachably securing the said holder and the table together at the forward end of the. holder. It will be observed therefore that upon the application of the pin K the table E and the holder G are removably secured together; that the table upon removing the pin K in the downwardly swung position of the table can be swung upwardly and rearwardly independent of the holder G into its upwardly swung position shown in dotted lines Fig. 2 so as to afford convenient access to the said holder when required as, for instance, to furnish the said holder with a new roll of paper. The holder, when it is made in the form of a sheet metal receptacle, as shown, houses the roll of paper in such a manner that the roll of paper is not exposed to mutilation. hen my improved combined desk and register is not in use the table and the said holder are kept in their upwardly swung position.

Means for locking the table E in its upwardly swung position are provided and comprise a'latch L which is shown arranged a suitable distance above the axis of the table and in suitable proximity to the right-hand side edge of the plate B. The latch is pivoted, as at- 16, horizontally to the plate B and has its axis parallel with the axis of the table, and a suitably applied spring 'm, acts to retain the latch in its operative position in which the latch projects forwardly and horizontally from the said plate. The table E is provided with a slot 17 which extends through the table and has the dimensions and arrangement required to permit the latch L to project therethrough in the up wardly swung position of the table. The latch L is provided with a rearwardly facing shoulder Z which overlaps the forwardly facing surface of the table in the upwardly swung position of the table and thereby locks or holds the table in the said position, and obviously the table, when it is in its upwardly swung position and held to the plate B through the medium of the latch L, is only rendered free to be swung into its lower position upon manipulating the latch against the act-ion of the spring m and to the extent required to free its shoulder Z from the said surface.

What I claim is 1. A combined desk and register comprising the following :,a stationary plate; a table pivotally connected to the said plate and arranged to swing on a substantially horizontal axis and projecting upwardly o1 forwardly from the plate according as the table is in its upwardly swung or downwardly swung position, which table at its forward end has a cutting edge extending transversely of the table and is provided near the said end with a slot which is spaced rearwardly from the cutting edge and extends transversely of the table, said table being provided at the top of the said slot with a cross-bar which extends transversely of the table and from end to end of the said slot and is rigid with the table and arranged between and spaced from the side walls of and depending slightly into the slot, and a holder for supporting a roll of paper, which holder is arranged at the under side of the table in the downwardly swung position of the table, said holder being pivotally connected to the aforesaid plate and arranged to swing in a vertical plane.

2. A combined desk and register comprising the following :a stationary plate; a table pivotally connected to the said plate and arranged to swing on a substantially horizontal axis and projecting upwardly or forwardly from the plate according as the table is in its upwardly swung or downwardly swung position, which table is provided at the under side of its forward portion with a downwardly projecting lug; a receptacle for containing and supporting a roll of paper at the under side of the table in the downwardly swung position of the table, which receptacle extends from under the rear portion to and under the forward portion of the table in the downwardly swung position of the table, said receptacle being pivotally connected to the aforesaid plate and arranged to swing in a vertical plane and provided in its forward portion with a slot engaged by the aforesaid lug, and a withdrawable pin extending through the said lug externally of the receptacle.
