Specieation of Letters Patent.l
Patented Feb. 13, gill.
Application filed March 2, 1908. Serial No. 418,719.
To all Lc/'rom t may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD E. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne, Stat-e of Michigan, have invented certain new andA useful linprovements in VindoW-Cleaners and Glass-Polishers; and l do declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.'
This invention relates to a Window cleaning and glass polishing device, especially designed for removing paint or other foreign matter from Window glass, and consists in the peculiar construction and association of partsv hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed. l
rlhe object of the invention is to provide a simple and cflicient device b y means of which glass may be cleaned and polished, and paint and other Vmatter readily removed from window glass by pressing the device forcibly against the surface of the glass to be cleaned and rubbing it thereover.
The above object is attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure l is a plan view of the working face of my improved Window cleaner and glass polisher. Fig. Q is a transverse section therethrougli as on line of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in plan showing more clearly the formation of the face of the device. Fig. l is a trans verse section as on line 4 4 of Fig. Fig. is a transverse section as on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the characters of reference, l designates a plate of suitable metal and of the required size., in the face of which are formed circular channelsl 2 producing between said channels annular beads 0r rings of gradually increasing diameter and concentric in relation. rlhe central portion of the plate has a depression 3 surrounded byY a raised ring 4. Crossing the circular channels 2 and extending from the ring to the margins of the plate l are the channels i 5. These radial channels cut through the circular concentric rings and divide them into segments 6 of varying sizes. 'lhese segments as will be seen are quadrangular figures having four sharp edges and t-Wo parallel sides curved concentric with the circular channels Because of the shape of the segments 6 and of their relative position upon the plate, their sharp cutting edges are present ed at various angles `to any foreign substance upon the surface of the glass so that when the plate is pressed againstthe glass and reciprocated across its surface, the sharp edges of said segments execute a shearing and scraping operation which cuts and scrapes the foreign matter from the surface of the glass even though said .foreign mat? ter may be of the nature of paint or varnish. Because of the great number of the cutting vsti,gii1 e11ls upon the surface of the plate, any foreign matter upon the is acted upon many times during a single movement of the plate by the several seg' ments which encounter it as the plate is moved across the surface of the glass, and
ras said segments stand at varying relationsv to onev another, the angle of the cutting margins of the segments which successively engage said foreign matter is continually changing, thereby etllecting a gr dual reduction of said substance from all sides7 as the plate manipulated, whereby its removal from the surface of the glass yis greatly facilitated.
ln the application of this window cleaner and glass poiisher, the best results are" attained when Water is used during the operation of cleaning the glass. The presence of the water causes the removed particles 'to flow into the channels between the segments and keeps the cutting edges of the segments free from adhering particles, preventing an accumulation of the removed mat-ter upon 'the' surface of said segments to rsnch an eX- tentas to hold them from prepercontact with the surface of the glass. By aplentiful use of water the plate may be kept clean when in use.
For the purpose of manipulating the plate, it is provided on the back face thereof with a ring 7 which -serves as a handle.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, an integral structure for cleaning windows comprising.
a flat, metal plate provided with a plurality of radially disposed rows of sector blocks rectangular in cross section projecting from In testimony whereof, I sign this specifithe face of said plate, the blocks of each cation in the presence of two Witnesses.
row being of gradually inoreasing length and all of said blocks having four cutting EDWARD E COLLINS' edges, there being in the central portion of Witnesses:
Said plate an unbroken ring having square O. B. BAENZIGER,
1 eutting edges. I. G. HowLE'rr.
