CORNELIUS CLARK, or LODI, CALIFORNIA.
PORTABLE SHIN GLE-RAGK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Shingle- Racks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in shingle racks used by persons for shingling roofs, the object of the invention being to produce a portable shingle rack having a nail stripper carried thereby, which shingle rack will be capable of being adjusted for use on roofs having a different pitch and also be capable of being folded compactly when not in use.
A further object is to produce in combination with the shingle rack a nail stripper, as set forth above, which can be used to take any number of nails desired at one time.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete shingle rack. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same in folded position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on a line XX of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a nail stripper.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, I first provide a shingle rack or platform 1, having an end board 2 against which the shingles may be piled. This platform is composed of side angle irons 3 which receive the member 1, such member 1 being provided at intermediate points with the grooves 4 provided with bottom slots 5, the bottoms of which grooves 4 extend below the floor 1, the slots 5 opening through the front end of such platform 1, to permit the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 19, 1911.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912. Serial No. 622,036.
nails 6 to be taken out in quantities as may be desired. 7
On the sides of the platform 1 are wire members 7 hooked to the board 2 by means of hooks 8. These side members 7 and the board 2 are adapted to fold over when desired so that they can be turned into folded position, as shown in Fig. 2, when not in use, in which position the wires 7 would be wired together by an auxiliary member 9 which would hold the parts together compactly for portable purposes.
Under the bottom of the member 1 at one end thereof is a pair of projecting arms 10, to which are hinged tubular members 11 carrying rollers 12 and 13.' The rollers 13 are provided with flanges 14.- to bear against the shingle lath 15 to hold the device in position on the roof, the other roller 12 having no flange, but merely rolling on the shingle lath 15 These rollers 12, however, are held in position by means of cotter pins 16 projecting through the tubular member 11, there being a plurality of holes 17 for this purpose, whereby the roller 12 may be changed to adjust the device to roofs having the shingle lath spaced at different widths apart.
The numeral 18 is a cross brace or tubular member projecting across from the lower ends of the tubular members 11 just inside the rollers 13.
Swiveled on the tubular members 11 are sleeves 19 carrying tubular members 20 adapted to receive pins 21 removably secured to the member 3, whereby the member 1 is held in a horizontal position regardless of the pitch of the roof. The members 19 are slidable on the members 11 and hence when it is desired to change from one pitch of roof to another, these members 21 are disengaged from the members 20 and then said members 20 move to another position whereupon the members 21 are moved and secured to the member 3 and projected into the members 20, all as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. This same structure aids in the folding of the device for the reason that when it is folded as described above, then the members 20 are folded into the same plane as the members 11 and then the members 11 are folded by reason of their connection with the members 10 into the same plane as the member 1, all as shown in Fig. 2, which forms a compact neat structure for portable purposes.
From the foregoing description it will readily-appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such devia tions from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the character described com prising the combination of a platform, projecting tubular members hinged to the underside of said platform at one end thereof, rollers on the ends of said tubular members, sleeves turnably mounted on said tubular members, tubular members carried by said sleeves and having open outer ends, re movable pins carried by said platform and adapted to project into the open ends of said last named tubular members, said pins being capable of being disengaged from said tubular members, said last named tubular members being adapted to lie horizontally with respect to' said first named tubular members when they are disengaged from said pins and said platform being adapted to "rest on said first named tubular members when said last named tubular members are in such described horizontal position as described.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
