Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
Application filed June 28, 1911. Serial No. 635,728.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED E. GRosvoLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of Visconsin, have invented a new and Improved Water-Gage, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates generally to water gages and more particularly to an attachment for the expansion tank of hot water heating systems, whereby the height of water in the tank may easily be ascertained.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved gage, which may be put to a variety of uses, but especially adapted for use on the expansion tank of hot water heating systems.
The invention comprises a suitable window, whereby a float suitably mounted within the interior of the tank, may be easily seen.
A further. object of the invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive device of the class described, which consists of few parts, and may be cheaply produced and which will serve the purpose for which it was designed in a simple and effective manner.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of an expansion tank fitted with my gage; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view showing the arrangement of the holding means for the float.
Any suitable expansion tank 1 is provided with an opening, preferably circular, in one side thereof, a circular member 2 being fitted into the opening, this member having an exterior shoulder3 adjacent one end thereof, and an interior shoulder 4 adjacent the other end. The member 2 is counterbored a suit able distance, and the counterbored portion is provided with a number of screw threads 5, adapted to co-act with similar threads 6 on an annular member 7 entering the said member 2, as shown in Fig. 1. The member 7 bears against a suitable washer 8', which in turn bears against a lens or piece of glass 9 contained at the bottom of the counterbore, whereby the lens or window is secured inposition, leakage being prevented by means of the washer which also enables a tight joint to be made, without undue pressure being brought to bear on the glass.
A float 10 is suitably mounted within the tank, being actuated by the rise of the water contained therein, this float being pivotally secured at 11 to a support 12, which consists of two downwardly-extending members 13, 14, the lower ends of which are twisted together, as at 15, and then made divergent, as at 16, 17. The upper portions of each of the members 18, 14: are formed in a circular shape, whereby a ring 18 is produced, which is adapted to be snugly received at the inner end of the member 2 and in engagement with the shoulder 4 thereon.
The lowermost position of the float is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the rise of the water in the tank bringing the float to the full-line position, and when it is opposite the lens or window 9, the proper level of the water has been reached. Of course, any level of water above that illustrated will maintain the float in the position shown, the purpose being rather to determine the minimum level than the maximum level, so that the heating system may be operated effectively.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be observed that I have provided a very simple and efficient gage for ascertaining the height of water in the expansion tank.
The parts of the device are few and the construction thereof is simple, so that the invention may be produced at a low cost.
Of course it is obvious that in adapting the device to tanks of different sizes the various parts thereof can be changed in order to satisfy the varying conditions, such changes, however, being included in the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the class described comprising a member having shoulders thereon, the member being adapted to be positioned within an opening in the side of a tank, the shoulders being positioned around opposite sides of the member, one shoulder being in engagement with the outside of the tank, a transparent window secured within the member and bearing against the other shoulder, a washer bearing against the window, means contained within the member and bearing against the washer, whereby the window is secured in position and a watertight joint is obtained, a float positioned within the tank and a support for the said float, the float being actuated by the rise and fall of the water and being movable int-o position adjacent the inside of the window when the water has reached a certain height.
2. A device of the class described compris ing a member having shoulders thereon, the member being adapted to be positioned within an opening in the side of a tank, the shoulders being positioned around opposite sides of the member and extending in opposite directions, one shoulder being in engagement with the outside of the tank, a transparent window secured within the member and bearing against the other shoulder, a washer bearing against the window, means contained within the said member and bearing against the washer whereby the window is secured in position and a water-tight joint is secured, a float positioned within the tank, together with a support made up of a piece of bent wire, one end of which is in engagement with the said inner shoulder of the said member, the other end of the wire being in pivotal engagement with the float whereby it may rise and fall with the level I of the water in the tank.
3. A device of the class described comprising a member having shoulders thereon, the member being positioned within an opening in the side of a tank, the shoulders being positioned around opposite sides of the member, one shoulder being in engagement with the outside of the tank, a window secured within the member and bearing against the other shoulder, a washer bearing against the window, an annular member in screwthreaded engagement with the first named member and bearing against the washer, whereby the window is secured in position and a water-tight joint is obtained, a float pivotally mounted within the tank, together with a support for holding the float in position whereby it may rise and fall with the level of the water and may be seen through the said window.
