BRAGE FOR COTTON SORAPER STANDARDS. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 23, 1911 Patnted Feb. 6, 1912.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY F. CARTER, 013 FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO CORDY N. FATE, OF FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
Application filed February 23, 1911. Serial No. 610,287.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Smith, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Brace for Cotton-Scraper Standards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to braces adapted to be applied to the standards of a cotton scraper and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a brace of simple structure composed of side members adapted to be secured each to one of the standards of a cotton scraper and each member consisting of sections which may be adjusted longitudinally with relation to each other and secured in adjusted position. At their inner ends the members carry plates which are adapted to abut one against the other whereby the standards are held at proper distances apart and an operator is relieved of the exertion usually experienced to hold the standards apart when the scrapers carried thereby are subjected to the weight of the material with which they come in contact.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the brace applied to the standards of a cotton scraper. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one of the brace members.
As the cooperating members of the brace are of identical structure a description of one member will answer for both. Each member consists of two sections 1 and 2 with an abutment plate 3 carried by the section 1. The section 1 is formed from ametallic bar which bent back having parallel spaced side p0rtions and the said side portions are then bent so that the section 1 is provided with hinged portions approximately at right angles to each other as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A securing bolt 4: passes transversely through the space between the side portions of the section 1 and also through the abut ment plate 3 and serves as means for adjustably securing the said abutment in position upon the section 1. The section 2 also consists of a metallic rod which is bent back upon itself having spaced side portions, the said side portions are then formed with shank portions 5 by bending the portions 6 at right angles to the portions 5. The p0r tions 6 merge into the portions 7 which are at right angles to the said portions 6 and the portlons 7 merge into portions 8 which are approximately parallel with the said portions 6. A clamp bolt 9 passes through the spaces between the portions 6 and 8 of the member- 2 and a clamp bolt 10 passes through the space between the shank portions 5 of the section 2 and the side portions of the member 1.
By loosening the bolt 10 the sections 1 and 2 may be slipped longitudinally of their overlapping portions with relation toeach other so that the brace member may be extended or contracted longitudinally. In its application the portions 6 and 8 are placed against the opposite sides of the scraper standard 11 and the portions 7 are against the forward edge of the said scraper standard. The clamp bolt 9 is inserted through the spaces between the portions 6 and 8 and Y when tightened serves as means for clamping the said portions against the sides of the standard. Thus the member is applied to the scraper standard and the abutment plate carried by the member at one side of the scraper bears against the abutment plate carried by the member at the opposite side and thus notwithstanding the fact that the beams upon which the standards 11 are pivotally connected with the arch bar of the scraper frame the said brace members having contact with each other as described will relieve the operator from the strain of holding the rear portions of the scraper beams in proper position when the scrapers carried by the standards 11 are subjected to the weight of the material with which they come in contact.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a cotton scraper having standards secured thereto, the combination of two members each comprising sections, means for securing the respective sections together in adjusted position, and
abutment plates carried by the inner sections, the outer sections being attached to the standards of the cotton scraper.
2. In a cotton scraper having standards secured thereto, sections each composed of a rod bent back upon itself and having spaced side portions, a securing device for holding the sections fixed with relation to each other,
' tions, an abutment said securing device passing through the space between the side portions of the secplate mounted upon one of the sections, and asecuring device passing through the space between the sides of the said sections and securing the said abutment plate, the other section being clamped to one ofthe standards of the cotton scraper, and a second abutment plate secured to the other standard and against Which the former abutment plate is adapted to rest.
3. In a cotton scraper having standards, tWo members of like construction, each member being longitudinally extensible, and an abutment plate adjustably mounted at the 15 inner extremity of each member, the outer ends of said members being secured to the standards of the cotton scraper.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signa- 20 ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY F. CARTER.
